Title: PHP and MySQL Web Development
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Luke Welling, Laura Thomson
Rating: 5/5
This book was designed with a beginner in mind. You can literally pick it up and get started. Although the "crash course" offered at the beginning is a little intimidating, upon reading into it and doing some of the exercises it all becomes do-able. One of the things I really like about this book is that it has ongoing exercises in it. Starting in chapter 1, you begin to design a website for a fictitious company, and through the next chapters you continue it's development, applying the new skills you've learned. This method (as opposed to doing little isolated exercises that don't give a comprehensive approach) was an easy way to apply new skills and really helped things stick.I did have some prior experience (although not much!) in programming Perl. This would definately be helpful, but it is most certainly not a requirement to learn PHP with this book. If you're not a very advanced programmer and are looking for an easy way to get started with PHP and online database processing, then this book is definately a solid choice .
Title: Professional SQL Server 2000 Programming
Publisher: Wrox
Authors: Robert Vieira
Rating: 4/5
I just read this book cover-to-cover over the last month to prepare for MS Cert exam 229 on SQL Server 2000. I passed fairly easily too. It's a great introduction to all features of SS2K, which was great for me as I hadn't done more than querying and database/table designs. It reads more like a novel than a dense reference book, but I think that keeps it interesting for those of us with short attention spans. If you're also getting it for the exam, just make sure to take notes on all the "little things" and study enough to really learn the material.
Title: PHP for the World Wide Web : Visual QuickStart Guide (2nd Edition) (Visual Quickstart Guides)
Publisher: Peachpit Press
Authors: Larry Ullman
Rating: 5/5
Larry Ullman provides a clear and excellent intro to PHP in this 2nd edition. I am a beginnning programmer and I have found this to be not only a really clear introduction, but also a reference manual as I go along. Plus, the author has created an online discussion forum that is actually active and works. From my somewhat thorough review, this is the best intro PHP book out there!Joshua

Title: Practical SQL The Sequel (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: Addison Wesley Longman
Authors: Judith Bowman, Judith S. Bowman
Rating: 5/5
This book takes a different and useful approach of focusing on a smaller number of queries but comparing different SQL dialects. Other books, such as "SQL Queries for Mere Mortals" and "Mastering SQL" cover SQL in more depth, but focus on the SQL standard, and don't try to show the variations found in different products.
Title: Professional PHP Programming
Publisher:
Authors: Jesus Castagnetto, Sascha Schumann, Harish Rawat, Chris Scollo, Deepak T. Veliath
Rating: 4/5
I got this book becuase I wanted to start using PHP to interact with my MySQL database, so I was depending on this book to lead me through it, and it did. This book is an essential learning tool for those who what to learn PHP without much of a hassle. The book is clearly written and moves along at just the right pace so as not to make you bored but also not so fast that you are bewildered. The reference sections are great for the more advanced PHP programmer who needs to look up all the different aspects of the language. The great thing about PHP is that is doesnt require as much dedication to learn as Java, C++, or VB and yet can be just as effective for web programming becuase of its power and ease of use. I highly recommend this book to those of you who can benefit from knowing PHP.
Title: MCSA/MCSE/MCDBA Self-Paced Training Kit: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 System Administration, 70-228, Second Edition
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Microsoft Corporation, Microsoft Corporation
Rating: 5/5
I have several year of experience with SQL 7.0 and was looking for the resource to tell me the distinct difference between 7.0 and 2000. The book reads well and has plenty of hands on step-by-step labs (if needed). Really the book is two books in one. The second part of the book is preparation for the exam with scenario-based questions. Additionally, the book comes with the usual 120 day Evaluation Edition of SQL 2000 server. Plus a second CD with supplemental course material, electronic version of the book (part 1), scripts for the lab, a test engine ("Electronic Assessment"), ect.I used the book as the primary source for studying for the 70-228 exam (passed the first time)along with BOL for fine points mentioned in each chapter. I found reading the book forward and then backward increased overall coverage due to interrelationships between chapters (don't worry the book reads fast). Even if you have no experience with SQL server, I think the book will do the trick. If you have no experience with relational databases, I would suggest picking up a source on database design.

Title: Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 with ASP, ColdFusion, and PHP : Training from the Source
Publisher: Macromedia Press
Authors: Jeffrey Bardzell
Rating: 5/5
I am around 6 years in the multimedia business, mastering most of Adobe and Macromedia programs.
For building web sites, I mostly use Dreamweaver and flash. I never build a real dynamic site.
When I got the book, I was ready to use 20% to 30% from the list of contents, but actually, I did read it all.
I can't describe how good it is. No meter what is your level/experience if you want to go dynamic this is the book.
I had to learn at the same time to build two sites one with ASP on SQL and one with PHP on Linux system and surprise surprise it even did work. I want to thank Jeffrey for the great book.
Title: Professional Apache Tomcat
Publisher: Wrox
Authors: Chanoch Wiggers, Ben Galbraith, Vivek Chopra, Sing Li, Debashish Bhattacharjee, Amit Bakore, Romin Irani, Sandip Bhattacharya, Chad Fowler
Rating: 5/5
This book has just come in at the right time for me to help through my work. I had referred to one earlier Apache Jkarta-Tomcat but was not satisfied and was crazy looking around for a good find. Must say, Wrox fulfills my expectations. The authors seem to have taken pains to pen down the details missed in the Apress with heavy and understandable stuff. Just taken me perfect through my installations. Good find man!
