Title: Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes, Third Edition
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ben Forta
Rating: 5/5
No need for a long review as I agree with the others. I'm a project manager and learning SQL because I need it for some development work I'm completing. Spend a weekend reading this book and you'll be productive with SQL. It won't teach or give you examples of complex queries, but it will get you started. And it's proved useful as a reference several times already. Some of the best money I've spent...
Title: MCSE SQL 2000 Administration Exam Cram (Exam: 70-228)
Publisher: Coriolis Group Books
Authors: Kalani Kirk Hausman
Rating: 1/5
Much of the content of this book involved repeating, over and over and over again, how to open SQL Enterprise Manager and work your way to right clicking a database name. Many pages are consumed detailing inane steps that even a beginner could quickly deduce. The book consumes 5 pages repeating nearly identical steps for performing Full, Differential, Transaction Log, and File/Filegroup, all of which are performed in the same dialog and all of which are fairly self explanatory. The explanations of CREATE DATABASE and ALTER DATABASE almost look like they were cut and pasted out of Books Online. The installation chapters teach you how to point and click your way through an installation...WOW, what a big help that is! DBCC command description are so brief that you must look them up in Books Online anyway. Overall, there is a total lack of depth and breadth on its subject. The content of Transcender exams, for example, (I haven't yet taken the test) goes into FAR more depth and detail than this book even hints at.This is without question the laziest effort I've ever seen put into a book. I'm embarressed for the author and for Coriolis.
There is absolutely no reason to spend money on this book.
Title: Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes, Third Edition
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ben Forta
Rating: 5/5
I learned SQL while I was school and it's been about few years since. So I was trying to refresh my SQL, and my first impression of "10 minutes" series was that you would get an overview of the subject and then a few basic examples to help you get started; But I was wrong. Despite the short length, this book "cuts through the crap" and gets straight to the point. The book is oriented by examples and I found those examples very useful and practical. Author starts out with very basic "SELECT" statement to various join statments and transaction. Although I do agree that it is not the "Bible" of SQL, I think this is a very good guide that I would refer to whenever I'm not sure about a SQL statement. Very well done!
Title: Web Application Development with PHP 4.0 (with CD-ROM)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Tobias Ratschiller, Till Gerken
Rating: 4/5
Finished reading this book, I have to say it is a good book as it is. The authers did an excellent job putting so much info in less than 400 pages. But It is almost useless for everyday programmers. There is not enough covering of anything mentioned in the book for writing code quickly, let alone PHP4. It is though excellent for project managers who are putting a web app together from scratch. The book touched upon every aspect of web app dev and provided analysis and many alterative tech. For everyday programmers, don't buy this book, read the online manual instead. For project managers, go get the book now!

Everyone working with SQL Server Notification Service should have this book on the shelf. It's just a must for the toolbox of every SQL NS developer, whether you're a newbie or an experienced SQL NS developer.
For people starting with SQL NS, it's a great introduction that goes in-depth on a lot of topics. It also includes useful tips to solve problems and tips to simplify the overall development process and debugging.
Experienced SQL NS developers should have it as well as a welcome addition to the SQL NS Books Online and they'll learn a big deal of debugging and tuning tips.
SQL Server DBAs will find useful information on performance scaling and deployment of SQL NS in their enterprises.
And of course, Shyam has a unique understanding of the product he has been building for four years now on the SQL NS team at Microsoft.
Title: Core PHP Programming: Using PHP to Build Dynamic Web Sites (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Pearson Education
Authors: Leon Atkinson
Rating: 1/5
This book is a piece of junk. I agree with those who call it a 'fat manual', 'big bore' etc. Not only most of the material is copied flat-out from PHP's documentation, there are bad tysetting mistakes (such as printing a big hypen for two dashes) and some factual errors. Index is useless and so it is the rest of the book. Important features like form and session have been written in a hand-waving fashion and lack all useful information. If someone really wants a good book on PHP, go get "Professional PHP ..." from Wrox. This is the best book I have seen so far... and I am not paid a commission for saying that. On a similar note, for MySQL I have found the book by 'Paul Bubois' the best.Enjoy.
Title: The Rational Guide to: SQL Server Reporting Services (Rational Guides)
Publisher: Rational Press
Authors: Anthony T. Mann

I have found it to be easy reading and to the point. It is laid out well and I especially like the notes, tech tips and bonus information.
Title: Optimizing Transact-SQL : Advanced Programming Techniques
Publisher: SQL Forum Press

Rating: 5/5
This book shows how to build better SQL. I find the info useful in building higher performance SQL statements.
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 System Administration Online Training Kit (It-Online Training Kit)
Publisher: Microsoft Pr Rating: 4/5
I found this kit (along with its companion, SQL Server Database Implementation Training Kit) to be great for learning how to use and administer SQL Server. Both kits are very engaging, with graphic illustrations, quizzes, assessments, and simulation exercises, which do a good job of reinforcing the learning material. If you're simply looking to get trained on SQL Server (or acquire a job as a SQL administrator), then these kits are more than sufficient (The simulations are especially helpful in this regard). Certainly, they helped me obtain my present job as a database analyst. And the price is very reasonable when compared with other software-simulation training kits such as those offered by CBT Systems and NETg (which cost about 4X more than the MS kits, and aren't really much better). However....if you're looking to pass the MS SQL exams, you will need more. The SQL exams are notoriously hard. The enclosed Readiness Review is somewhat helpful, but the actual questions on the exam are much harder. Read BOL (included with kit), visit cramsession and similar sites, and take a practice test first.
Title: PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Web Sites: Visual QuickPro Guide
Publisher: Peachpit Press
Authors: Larry Ullman
Rating: 5/5
Over the years I have been reading Larry's books. I have been hooked from his first book. This book like his others start out with the basics and then jumps into the advanced stuff. It also contains a lot of real world examples that someone could use for thier site right now. As always I truely recommend this book to people that are beginners thru advanced. I have always used his books as reference guides as well. This is a must buy and is worth every cent.
