Very Good! Very organized!

Very good book!!

If you are a beginner in PL/SQL, this should be your first book to learn PL/SQL. It is very organized, ranging from the basics to the more advanced topics.
If you plan to become an expert PL/SQL developer, you must combine this book with Steven Feuerstein's "Oracle PL/SQL Programming 3rd edition" and "Oracle PL/SQL Developer Workbook".

Title: SQL Pocket Guide
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Jonathan Gennick
Rating: 3/5
Great, but not what I was looking for.

First: The signal to noise ratio in this book is wonderful. There's a vast amount of information packed into this little volume.Second: A significant portion of it has to do with interoperability between database vendors, the differences in syntactic sugar between Oracle/DB2/SQL Server & MySql really don't interest me all that much.Third: There is nary a word in here about DDL. Nothing on creating/dropping tables, indices & keys, views, databases.Fourth: Nor is there any treatment on user access (granting permissions, etc.)Fifth: Selects/Joins/updates/deletes, etc. Are all very thoroughly covered. These are all things I expect a "SQL Pocket Guide" to have. Instead this is more of a "SQL Interoperability Guide". Conclusion? This is a great little book if you are not a DBA and never take on the role of one.

Title: Optimizing Transact-SQL : Advanced Programming Techniques
Publisher: SQL Forum Press
Authors: David Rozenshtein, Anatoly Abramovich, Eugene Birger

DO NOT FOLLOW THIS BOOK'S ADVICE

At the price I paid, I would have expected this book to be more substantial. Instead, it's just a collection of reprints from SQL Forum. I'm not amused. Moreover, the techniques shown in these reprinted articles are rather obscure and difficult to read. I'd be hesitant to use them in my own code for fear of retribution by my team members. Other than limiting the number of SELECTs you write, I don't see any real advantage to them.

Title: The Practical SQL Handbook: Using Structured Query Language (3rd Edition)
Publisher: Pearson Education
Authors: Judith S. Bowman, Sandra L. Emerson, Marcy Darnovsky
Rating: 5/5
This is by far the best book on SQL I've ever read.

The Practical SQL Handbook is by far the best book I've ever read on SQL. Where most books are vague and uses poor example in an attempt to explain SQL, this one is detailed without all the fluf. The example as well as the verbage is easy to understand and more importantly the examples make since. I would recommend this book to all levels of SQL programmers.

Title: The Guru's Guide to Transact-SQL
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: Ken Henderson
Rating: 5/5
The best darn T-SQL book available

I wasn't sure what to expect from a "Guru's Guide" but I have to say, I wasn't disappointed. I have all the other T-SQL books and this one is the very best of the lot. The chapters on data type nuances, cursors, and undocumented T-SQL are my favorites. Many of the tricks you find in this book you will not find elsewhere. It's simply the best darn T-SQL book available.

Title: Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes, Third Edition
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ben Forta

This book saved my life!

....This is truly one of the best (if not the best) technology books ihave ever owned. As part of a development team that started workingwith oracle/sql about 1 year ago, I have seen a ton of books(literally - most large enough to make you weep) on sql make their wayinto the office. this one is hands-down my favorite. It certainlydoesn't have the depth that you may need after you become an sql"expert", but for 99% of your chores as an applicationdeveloper, this will be the book YOU WANT on your desk. Nice job BenForta - please write more books!

Good but I want more!!

This is the third book from Ken and I believe in my heart that this is the best book out there. It is like the Lion King which by the way I cry every time I see it but SQL is spoken of beautifully as if Mark Twain and Larrie Wright Jr. spoke in concert through the author as a medium. He is thorough and comprises an all you need to know attitude on everything else. The samples in the book are of like having your whole house together without the paint ( the paint being pure imagination for design) OK enough already this book is great but I need more... I need things spelled out the right way and also in a way as if I were Dyslexic backwards you know???

Title: PHP Bible, 2nd Edition

Authors: Tim Converse, Joyce Park

amazing

I have bought a lot of books about a lot of computer-subjects but I have never bought a book
where the information was so well structured and explained.
It is a perfect guide for php beginners (such as myself about a month ago) and I have the impression that this book
is a great addition to the knowledge of more advanced php users.
With a lot of "ready-to-use" scripts they quide you from beginning php towards becomming an advanced php programmer.
I began this book about one month ago and now I am programming more serious work with great help from this book.
If you chouse to start programming php or want an addition to you're current knowledge this book
should be more than satisfying.

Title: Essential PHP for Web Professionals
Publisher: Pearson Education
Authors: Christopher Cosentino
Rating: 3/5
Good for newbies but experienced programmers should avoid

This book provides the basics of PHP programming in an easy-to-read format. It also provides a simplistic discussion of many of PHP's benefits, including cookie management and auto responders. Its lack of detail, however, will frustrate those who already have experience in programming Perl, C++ or other OO languages. For example, the book introduces the mail() function with a light code example, but does not indicate or even hint that configuration must occur somewhere with sendmail (on the linux box) or an outgoing smtp server (for windows). I would recommend this book to non-programmers who want a quick-and-dirty intro. to PHP, but experienced web app. developers should look elsewhere.
