Title: MCDBA SQL Server 7 Administration Study Guide (Book/CD-ROM Set)
Publisher: Mcgraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Syngress
Rating: 5/5
This book covers the objectives for the SQL Server 7 administration exam in a reasonable way. However, it fails to achieve greatness because it is based on a beta version of SQL Server 7 (probably beta 3), and it came out long before anyone had seen the FINAL version of the Microsoft test. As such, the book has a few flaws and probably fails to cover some of the areas that will be important on the test. Even so, I found the book well worth the money I paid. In fact, unlike some of the other exam guides I've bought in the past, this one will stay on my shelf even after I pass.
Title: The Guru's Guide to Transact-SQL
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: Ken Henderson
Rating: 3/5
This is a good book for DBA's.
Developers however, will need to find other texts related more specifically to developing applications with T-SQL, the difference can be quite pronounced.
Title: Apache Jakarta-Tomcat
Publisher: Apress
Authors: James Goodwill
Rating: 5/5
Finally someone describes Tomcat beyond the online docs. I have noticed that some argue that this doesn't cover anything past the online docs, but I have never seen anything on Embedding Tomcat into Java application, SOAP integration, Log4J integration, or even Struts integration in the online docs.I also got a lot out of the server.xml appendix.I just don't understand the "just like the online doc comments."Great book.
Title: Professional SQL Server Development with Access 2000
Publisher: Peer Information Inc.
Authors: Rick Dobson
Rating: 5/5
Having spent a number of years using Access to develop commercial solutions I recently moved on to Access projects and found this book a real find in getting up and running in a short space of time. Covering each topic in logical chunks I found it to be more than a good grounding in the subject. It is also well written in plain English and avoids the unnecessary complications that are often found in such books and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who is considering developing Access projects.
Title: Professional SQL Server 2000 Programming
Publisher: Wrox
Authors: Robert Vieira
Rating: 4/5
The author has explained things neatly but the problem is you seem to be taken in for more theortical info than a Hands on approach. I wanted to master sql 2000 in short time since I new sql 7.0 but it has consumed more time than that . If you are serious to learn and get a grasp of it in short time then this is not the book.Guna
Title: The Rational Guide to: SQL Server Reporting Services (Rational Guides)
Publisher: Rational Press
Authors: Anthony T. Mann
Rating: 2/5
Don't waste your time with this book. You will get much more detailed information from Microsoft's website (MSDN Reporting Services). By the time the book was delivered to my house I already new more from the Internet then what the book contained. I give it 2 stars instead of 1 because it is the very first book on RS, and I guess if all you want is to see what RS is about without actually using it, it might be enough.
Title: Sams Teach Yourself Transact-SQL in 21 Days (2nd Edition)

This book covers everything an application developer needs to write solid SQL. From basic SQL syntax, to stored procedures and triggers. There are numerous examples each with a detailed explanation to really help you understand the concepts. I use this book almost everyday.
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 7 Administrator's Guide
Publisher: Muska & Lipman/Premier-Trade
Authors: Ron Talmage
Rating: 4/5
Already brought other SQL 6.5/7.0. SQL 7.0 Dev, sql Comp, Using sql 7.0 by Wynkoop. So looking for book that takes time to explain concepts. Example Linked servers is new, good/decent coverage, vs remote servers. Other SQL 7.0 did not cover. So looking for SQL 7.0 books that cover stuff not found in others. Unfortunately I just only ordered it so I may revise my review later.I am taking MS 1 week course to pass SQL 7.0 70-028 exam, so anything that helps with this. Other books by MS ADM 7.0/SQL 7.0 Unleashed not out yet so I am stuck. Ones I already have by Osborne I would give 3-4 stars.
Title: McSe: SQL Server 6.5 Administration Study Guide
Publisher: Sybex Inc
Authors: Lance Mortensen, Rick Sawtell, Michael Lee, Sawtell, M. Lee
Rating: 5/5
I am an MCSE with a bunch of MS Access experience but very little SQL Server experience. I found this book to be an excellent introduction to the subject. The text is written to specifically and directly address the points of the official MS exam guidelines, but that does not get in the way of it being a cohesive explanation of the use of the product. The text includes a great number of screen shots and many excercises to guide one through most of the significant functions of the software. There also seemed to be fairly few typos. The end of chapter questions, and the troubleshooting chapter, however, could have been a bit more substantial. With this text, the on-line docs, and a bit of time playing with the demo copy of the software available from the MS website, the exam was not all that tough.
