Title: Beginning PHP 5 and MySQL: From Novice to Professional
Publisher: Apress
Authors: W. J. Gilmore
Rating: 5/5
Although I have a number of years experience as a programmer, I am very new to web programming, especially server-side scripting. Both my son and I are now learning PHP in order to expand our programming knowledge and to gain some web-automation experience. My son is the webmaster for the videa yearbook at his high school, and he was specifically interested in getting rid of some tedious web maintenance issues by converting at least a part of his site over to dynamic web pages using PHP.
I spent some time selecting a book on PHP to help us both in our ventures - always a tough choice, unless of course you have lots of money, and are willing to buy 10 books at random and then pick the best bits out of them all.
I read the reviews of this book here on Amazon, and based on the overall very positive response from other purchasers, I went ahead and picked up a copy.
One great pleasure I found with this book is that the writer takes the time to express himself in a very readable fashion, while still covering a lot of technical issues. I especially like the way the book is broken down into sections based on what you want to accomplish with PHP, rather than just being a linear list of its functions.
I have yet to deeply venture into the sections on integrating MySQL with PHP, but from the quick looks I have made at those chapters, they seem to be equally well written.
I highly recommend the book to anyone.
Title: SQL Server 2000 Design & T-SQL Programming
Publisher: Osborne/McGraw-Hill
Authors: Michael Reilly, Michelle Reilly, Michelle Poolet
Rating: 1/5
Headaches..Headaches..Headaches..I personally go through a lot of technical books. This one is a nightmare. If you like to read books that are just get to the point, then this book is not for you. The writing style so horrible that I have to take a break on almost every 3-4 pages. This book claimed that it is for all level. However, I honestly don't think this book is for a beginner person. If you are looking for an entry-level book on the SQL 2000, I would recommend "SQL Server 2000 Programming" from Wrox.
Title: MCSE SQL 7 Database Design and Administration Practice Tests Exam Cram (Exam: 70-028, 70-079)
Publisher:
Authors: Geoffrey Alexander, Joseph, Jr. Alexander
Rating: 5/5
I would not purchase this book then expect to automatically pass the exam(s), but you will not find 300 exam-style review questions spanning 2 exams for this price anywhere. I wrote and passed exam 70-029 which was my last for the MCSD designation. If the core exams for the MCSD are considered difficult, then 70-029 is near impossible. No one single studying source will get you through it. There are some errors in this book, and believe me, you will never get a question on the real exam testing your knowledge of the SQL syntax for simply creating a table. But those are minor complaints paired against the value this book brings in its explanations for each question, and the sheer number of questions contained within.I must give this book a high rating simply by virtue of the fact that I used it as one of my studying resources for the 70-029, and I passed.
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 7 DBA Survival Guide

The BEST! I recommend this book as a must have for all my clients that run SQL Svr 7.
Title: PHP for the World Wide Web : Visual QuickStart Guide (2nd Edition) (Visual Quickstart Guides)
Publisher: Peachpit Press
Authors: Larry Ullman
Rating: 4/5
If you need a run off point to help you leap into the world of PHP, you just found it. I read it and got a good handle of what is going on in the world of PHP, not to say that I am now a programmer. However I can now write minor scripts and understand the languge when looking at it. If you want in on the ground level, this is the book for you.

Title: Professional PHP Programming
Publisher:
Authors: Jesus Castagnetto, Sascha Schumann, Harish Rawat, Chris Scollo, Deepak T. Veliath
Rating: 5/5
I've read more PHP books, websites, mailing lists and discussion groups than I care to think about in the last few weeks, and NOTHING has come close to this book. For an almost-complete newbie, it is clear, concise, very easy to navigate and - particularly the section on mySQL - has made easy things I just never thought I'd understand. Thank you so much, Wrox!

I changed hosting companies and had to stop using ASP and MS Access for dynamic content. I immediately fell in love with PHP and had to get this book. It has helped me time and time again. In a few short weeks, I was running my site with PHP and MySQL. It was mostly thanks to this book. It even helped me set up an administration site where I can edit content and is password protected. Thank you authors, for a wonderful book. I'm sure I will be using for years to come.
Title: XML and PHP
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Vikram Vaswani
Rating: 4/5
Vikram Vaswani wrote a very focused book, covering every aspect of PHP and XML integration, with dedicated chapters on SAX and DOM parsers, XSL, WDDX, XML-RPC and SOAP. I think that PHP 4 is still lacking in the area of XML integration, but intermediate and advanced developers can still perform a lot of tasks using this combo. The book is clearly written; it covers a lot of different extensions and third party libraries with full code listings
