The book is plentiful of carefully selected examples, which illustrate each topic in a very clear and real-life simulation. The complete sections of practical real-life examples found at the end of some chapters are very useful and can be modified and used in practical applications. It is really a great job. Buy this book. It is really a great job.
Title: SQL Tips & Techniques
Publisher: Muska & Lipman/Premier-Trade
Authors: Konrad King, Kris Jamsa
Rating: 5/5
I wasn't expecting two people from UPS to have carry this book into my office--the book is huge. I have been using MYSQL for a year and I am moving to MS SQL Server. The book's tips (over 600) have been invaluable. I used the code the book provides to convert many of applications to support transactions. Got to eliminate tons of code. Very well done! Recommend.
Title: Apache Server 2.0: A Beginner's Guide
Publisher: Osborne/McGraw-Hill
Authors: Katherine Wrightson, Kate Wrightson
Rating: 1/5
I am a systems administrator trying to set up Apache running on a network.
I have been trying hard to cope with this book for simple installation and configuration procedures but in vain. After desperate efforts, i picked up the kate wrightson book and i got everything set up in a snap (actually 3 days of fruitful reading).Thumbs down to the Professional Apache 2.0 book for
trying to cover too much in too little space.
Title: Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes, Third Edition
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ben Forta
Rating: 5/5
I was learning how to use ColdFusion and I quickly realized that I needed to have a good knowledge of SQL to succeed with CF. I picked up SQL in Ten Minutes, read it on the train, and came back with the ability to code basic queries and post informaition to the database. Every concept is clearly explained, but there are (thankfully) no long-winded examples to follow, so you get what you need and get out. I also recommend it as a reference book, although it does not explain every keyword in SQL, such as "ONCE." But it's small and will not take up a lot of space on your desk or briefcase.
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 Unleashed
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Sharon Bjeletich, Greg Mable
Rating: 5/5
A lot of books coming from this publisher are not worth the money that they charge... except this one. This title is well worth every penny.
Title: MCSE Fast Track: SQL Server 7 Database Design (Covers Exam: 70-029)
Publisher: New Riders Publishing
Authors: Thomas Moore
Rating: 5/5
Skimmed over the foundational stuff, and provided some in-depth advice about how to pass the exam. Assumes that you already have experience with the product, and don't need a primer (or a braindump).
Title: SQL Server 2000 Stored Procedure Programming
Publisher: Osborne/McGraw-Hill
Authors: Dejan Sunderic, Tom Woodhead
Rating: 5/5
This is one of the clearest, most useful programming books I have ever run across in 18 years of programming! If you are doing anything more than writing simple queries, get this book. Highly useful for those developing ADO.NET SQL Server applications, because it covers all the nuances of SQL stored procedures and triggers that you'll want behind your ADO.NET apps. Also covers the differences between SQL 7 and 2000 clearly, and goes into automating administrative tasks via T-SQL, including the Windows registry. Has a good introduction to SQL XML.
Title: Professional PHP Programming
Publisher:
Authors: Jesus Castagnetto, Sascha Schumann, Harish Rawat, Chris Scollo, Deepak T. Veliath
Rating: 2/5
This book has many issues. Such as poor organization and indexing, missing php functions, and lack of in-depth examples with good explanations. If your new to programming and desperately need a reference to get you started, this may be the book for you. Yet the problems I mentioned above would be frustrating for new programmers. Its frustrating enough when you know what your looking for and can't find it. I find myself using the online documentation far more than I use this book.On the other hand, this book does provide various examples on how to use php and may prove to be helpful to some. Please note that this review does not cover chapter 2 "Installing and Configuring PHP" since I did not need to read this portion of the book.
Title: MCDBA SQL Server 7 Administration Study Guide (Book/CD-ROM Set)
Publisher: Mcgraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Syngress
Rating: 2/5
Terrible writing style and heaps of mistakes makes this a book that I wouldn't give to my worst enemy. The author contradicts himself several times and gives false information. Even some of the answers to the ridiculously easy questions don't agree with the theory in the chapter which is being tested on.Don't trust this book to get you through the exam.
Title: OCP Introduction to Oracle9i: SQL Exam Guide
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Jason Couchman
Rating: 3/5
The book is very well organized and easy to follow. It is an excellent tool to prepare for the OCP. I strongly agree with the other reviewers that there are some errors in the book that are frustrating. I was pleased that there is a nice errata web page posted ... and this helped me edit the text so I was studying the correct information for the OCP. I am VERY disappointed with the CD_ROM software that comes with the textbook and provides interactive questions to prepare for the OCP. There are incorrect answers provided in this software, so the end result is that I found myself dilligently learning wrong answers for the OCP. There is no errata for the CD-ROM. You're on your own figuring out what's correct and what's incorrect. It's a dangerous tool to use due to the fact you can study very hard and the end result will be that you learned wrong answers to the OCP test. Perhaps an easy solution to this problem could be to simply have errata included on the existing errata web site for the CD-ROM questions. The CD-ROM questions have unique numbers, so it would be easy to post the correct answers to these questions on the errata web site. In the meantime I'm focusing on the book and leaving the CD-ROM unused. The book though is excellent. The author did a super job, and I hope the other three Oracle Press books that follow in the Oracle 9i OCP sequence are as good as this one is.
