Title: Oracle PL/SQL Programming, Third Edition
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Steven Feuerstein
Rating: 5/5
No matter how long you already work with PL/SQL, (and with the Web it gets a new importance) I bet you will get to know the "even better" - techniques. And for topics one hasn't implemented yet I consider the "teaching approach" excellent; which for me means: equally good for a beginner as for the experienced. I'm in since 10 years and - in combination with the same authors book "Programming in Packages" - I got much more than I expected. Thats why I blindly ordered the authors new book "Oracle Built-in Packages" coming around May 98. I'm looking forward to new ways "of doing it".
Title: Learning eZ publish 3: Building Content Management Solutions--Leaders of the eZ publish community guide you through this complex and powerful PHP-based Content Management System
Publisher: Packt Publishing
Authors: Paul Borgermans, Tony Wood, Paul Forsyth, Martin Bauer, Bjorn Dieding, Ben Firt
Rating: 4/5
With this book, our intrepid micro-publisher has sought to lay out an understanding of the complex content management system eZ Publish (www.eZ.no). eZ Publish is a very powerful php based CMS solution, and really does meet the requirements of an Enterprise CMS solution.
However, it has not been a very well documented project despite great efforts by the developers, especially for the more complex functionality.
This book addresses many of the things that are left wanted by the documentation, such as the modification of core classes. However, it oddly combines them with basic information like how to set up the system -- information which was almost out of date before the book was released.
Sadly, the book fails to go deep enough to satiate the demand of our more technical users while also failing to provide enough introductory material for beginners. This lack of clear audience focus plagues the book and lessens it's utility for real world developer or beginners.
This book is absolutely worth the money, if you've got a little php under your belt and you're looking to really buckle down and start developing eZ Publish sites. But if you're a beginner, or you don't have a solid understanding of php, you'll probably find this book to be over your head past the first chapter.
This publisher is coming out with a revised version which I am sure will address many of these issues, as they are one of the best computer book publishers to hit the scene since WROX. The fourthcoming Plone book by the same publisher looks like a good title, and the OpenCMS book by Packt Publishers is very good.
Title: Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Kalen Delaney
Rating: 5/5
This is a must have book for any serious SQL Server programmer.
I was amazed by the level of details that the book covers. It is the BIBLE of Microsoft SQL Server 2000. From the architectural viewpoint, there no way to compare this book with any other in the market. It shows you the implementation as well as the programming details of Microsoft SQL Server. If you are serious about knowing SQL Server inns & outs. Get this great book. I enjoyed every paragraph and page along the way.
Title: McSe Readiness Review Exam 70-028: Administering Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 (Mcse Readiness Review)
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Jill Spealman
Rating: 3/5
I have little experience with SQL Server 7. After taking a class and reading a book, I then used the Readiness Review to determine whether I was ready for the exam. According to my scores on the Review, I was ready. But the exam I took did not look anything like the questions in the book. The exam was far more difficult than what I expected based on this book. So it's back to studying... both BOL and yet another book on SQL Server admin.
Title: Beginning PHP, Apache, MySQL Web Development
Publisher: Wrox
Authors: Michael K. Glass, Yann Le Scouarnec, Elizabeth Naramore, Gary Mailer, Jeremy Stolz, Jason Gerner
Rating: 5/5
I have about every book related to PHP, Apache, and MySQL out there--from beginning to advanced. This book has several things in it that are excellent, even to the professional.I have read some of the recent responses. I would hope these guys at least know what PHP is before buying a book. This is EXCELLENT for beginners. And quite honestly, what books don't have a few typos? The book requires you to have a working knowledge of these items.I would recommend this book to those that want to increase their knowledge beyond "Hello world".

Title: Oracle9i: SQL (with an Introduction to PL/SQL)
Publisher: Course Technology
Authors: Lannes Morris-Murphy
Rating: 5/5
This book is very good. I don't usually write any reviews for textbook. However, I have to tell you that this book is great for studying Oracle SQL. The book is written is a very oganized lay out. After reading form cover to cover, you should be thoroughly ready to take Oracle exam.
Title: Web Database Applications with PHP & MySQL, 2nd Edition
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Hugh E. Williams
Rating: 5/5
This book has its conceptual merits and demerits. But let's give the authors the benefit of the doubt, and let's assume that this is a decent introduction to its subject matter. I'd still advise against purchasing it, as in detail it's extremely unreliable and often confused.Since I started counting, I've found an error every 4 to 5 pages. Some are cosmetic, but some seriously damage the value of the examples and descriptions. The text contradicts itself at several points; some examples don't produce the results the text says they will; some figures are glaringly broken. This book is the victim of an obviously poor editing job, for which I blame O'Reilly more than the authors. Either way, you should probably look elsewhere unless you already know enough to silently correct all the errors you'll find.
Title: PHP and MySQL Web Development, Second Edition
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Luke Welling, Laura Thomson
Rating: 3/5
As a newbie I found the book explanatory (theory wise) but my frustration stem from the fact that the codes are full of errors and thus made the whole practical part very frustrating. If only the authors could please re-read the book and make necessary corrections.
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Bible with CD-ROM
Publisher: Wiley
Authors: Paul Nielsen
Rating: 5/5
SQL Server 2000 Bible is a great book for a developer. I've been a SQL Server developer since 6.5 and, while I can't speak to the admin side this, this is the book that has the level of depth and detail to keep me interested - over 10,000 lines of code, not filled with foolish filler screen shots, and great developer ideas that other books don't even touch.
There's another review that says this book doesn't have enough depth, and in another review, the same reviewer praises The Guru's Guide to T-SQL for it's depth. But, the sample code listed in the Guru's Guide review IS IN SQL Server 2000 Bible on p.384. The Guru's Guide is a good book, but SQL Server 2000 Bible has T-SQL development details and ideas not mentioned in any other SQL book that I've found. The book has 60+ pages on joins and subqueries with techniques and ideas I've never heard of. The advenced T-SQL chapter alone is worth the price of the book. If you're a SQL Server developer, you need this book.
