Title: Professional SQL Server 2000 Programming
Publisher: Wrox
Authors: Robert Vieira
Rating: 5/5
This is the best book I have ever read about SQL Server programming. It is an extremely analytic book that will take us to an easy, educative trip to the SQL Server 2000 world. Apart from the scientific writting, which is more than excellent, the author uses a rather easy writting style which makes the book very readable.
Title: Web Application Development with PHP 4.0 (with CD-ROM)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Tobias Ratschiller, Till Gerken
Rating: 4/5
Knowing how to code PHP is quite simple, especilly if you come from c/c++, but when you need to build a full scale Web application, this book will be very very useful. I go back to it all the time and always find something more out of it, a real thumb up !
Title: Joe Celko's SQL for Smarties: Advanced SQL Programming (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems)
Publisher: Morgan Kaufmann
Authors: Joe Celko
Rating: 5/5
SQL for Smarties is a book that you should own if you work with relational databases. It has good practical advice and good examples. It is useful both for improving your SQL skills and as a reference.
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Resource Kit (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Microsoft Corporation, Microsoft Corporation
Rating: 5/5
This is not a "how to" book or a training manual, but a full on reference companion to books online, and a must for anyone serious about SQL Server. It's worth getting for the book alone, but the software is excellent. A HTML view of the system tables, and a slew of tools make this THE definitive companion to Books Online.
Title: MCSE SQL 2000 Administration Exam Cram (Exam: 70-228)
Publisher: Coriolis Group Books
Authors: Kalani Kirk Hausman
Rating: 5/5
This is a lengthy review of all of the topics laid down by Microsoft for the exam study guide, not just a brain-dump of the questions and answers like a lot of the tech-prep stuff. The self-test was a really complete review just before my test. Though the questions were different, I got a bunch of them right off because of the self-test and its description of the reasons why each was right or wrong. It's certainly not the 'great american novel' but then this is the most dry and boring type of reading there is. If it works, who cares if it is long. I liked the SQL 7.0 book better, since it was shorter.
Title: SQL Server The Complete Reference
Publisher: Osborne Publishing
Authors: Gayle Coffman
Rating: 5/5
I was looking for a book on SQL Server 7 for a while now. This book has = it all. I liked the Chapters at the end with the Transact-SQL syntax and = the stored procedures. The new views for the system tables called = Information Schemas are something new in Chapter 22 on System Tables. = Actually, every chapter is packed full of new features.
Title: Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 with ASP, ColdFusion, and PHP : Training from the Source
Publisher: Macromedia Press
Authors: Jeffrey Bardzell
Rating: 5/5
I found his book amazing! It's the best book I have read to understand, what I thought would be very complicated to learn. The best part for me, a beginner with Cold Fusion, is learning how to use Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX 2004's tools to create cold fusion pages quickly and easily. The book uses a complete website example to step through various types of dynamic web pages and coding. The book includes helpful screen examples of the design and code view allowing me to compare my creations to expected outcomes. To pick up things I might have missed in the first reading, I went through the book completely a second time, and found things I didn't remember the first time through that I am using in my daily web designing. I keep referring back to the book and the accompaning CD for reference. For a beginner, wanting to learn to create dynamic pages, this is a must! Thank you Jeff Bardzell for putting out such a wonderful and useful book!
Title: Beginning Php 4 (Programmer to Programmer)
Publisher: Peer Information
Authors: Chris Lea, Allan Kent, Ganesh Prasad, Chris Ullman
Rating: 5/5
I bought this book after buying Professional PHP Programming - which was a totally useless book. This book is MUCH better. Not only does it teach PHP but is a very good reference and has a usable index unlike Professional PHP Programming. Please note that this book and Professional PHP Programming look almost identical but if you want to learn how to program in PHP, this book is for you.
Title: Advanced Transact-SQL for SQL Server 2000
Publisher: Apress
Authors: Itzik Ben-Gan, Tom Moreau
Rating: 1/5
This book is neither practical nor advanced, despite the claims on the cover. One thing that becomes crystal clear from reading through the book is that neither of the authors is a Transact-SQL expert. We have one giving us (what he must think are) funny analogies having to do with meeting people with the same first name. Oh, that's hilarious. And informative, too. I'm so glad you thought to include that paragraph in your book instead of something more technical. I felt enlightened after I read it. Not.I heard that some of blowhards on the newsgroups were recommending this book, so I got myself a copy. What a waste. I don't know where they get some of these authors. There isn't a bit of technical info in this book that you can't find elsewhere, mostly in the online documentation. For that alone, it gets a one star. I didn't buy the book to get a printed BOL.Another problem is with the coding examples. There must be an error on nearly every other page. I don't expect the code in a book to be perfect, but I do expect most of it to run. Unfortunately, it doesn't.A last problem is with the stuff they leave out. Where are the useful UDFs? Where's the coverage of query tuning? Why didn't you tell me about all the problems with Distributed Partitioned Views? I've had nothing but trouble with them. I put them in production because of books like this one only to discover that they have many prickly edges and really aren't ready for prime time.I guess my final verdict is this: I wouldn't recommend this book if it was the last technical book on the planet. It's a horrible mess that wasted my time.
Title: SQL Server 2000 Stored Procedure Programming
Publisher: Osborne/McGraw-Hill
Authors: Dejan Sunderic, Tom Woodhead
Rating: 1/5
This book doesn't cover SQL Server 2000 in any depth, doesn't cover stored procedures to any great degree, and doesn't offer anything insightful re: programming. Basically, the book doesn't do what the cover claims. It was a complete waste of my time.
