Title: PHP and MySQL Web Development, Second Edition
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Luke Welling, Laura Thomson
Rating: 5/5
I highly recommended this book to anyone who wants to build web sites. I went through every chapter with ease. The examples are well documented and explained. For the developer who needs the details, I used RedHat9 Pro and did not have to update anything to run the examples. The Integrated Development Environment I used for the examples in this book incorporated a Linux Server with RedHat9, an internal NT4.0 network and a Windows NT4.0 workstation.I was able to develop custom dynamic web pages much easier with PHP than with the WYSIWYG editor. This book is structured for teaching the development dynamics of any size web site from the small business to the large corporate site that use or require many writers contributing to the sites development. The examples in this book also may be customized to fit almost any website needs and is a great template for future development. New to PHP and MySQL ?; Then the first few chapters will get you up to speed quickly.
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Unleashed (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ray Rankins, Paul Jensen, Paul Bertucci
Rating: 5/5
I have found this book to be a great resource for development, administration, and performance tuning for SQL Server. I have been working with databases for almost 10 years and with SQL Server for over 5 years. I find myself frequently referring to this book and getting useful information. I would highly recommend it for both intermediate and advanced users.
Title: McSe Training Guide: SQL Server 6.5 Design and Implementation (Training Guides (New Riders))
Publisher: New Riders Pub
Authors: David Besch, Sean Baird
Rating: 3/5
I found this book hard to use. The way they laid out the system and database catalogs was worthless. The examples were sparse to non-existent in the latter chapters (deadline approaching, maybe). The indexing chapters were almost informative enough to be useful. STILL, it's good enough to pass the test.
Title: SQL Server DTS
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Jim Samuelson, M. Santos, S. Miller, S. Hughes, B. Sullivan
Rating: 5/5
Haven't gotten too far into this book yet. Almost gave up on the whole book just based on my experiences in Chapter 2. It is full of errors. The calls to the lookups have the parameters in the wrong order in listing 2.1 and 2.2. The instructions in chapter 2 are confusing and hard to follow. You shouldn't mix Sql 7 and 2000 together. They should be in separate sections. He references a task on page 36 that doesn't even exist. I spent a whole day trying to interpret what I was really supposed to do. I finally did so, but someone needs desperately to edit this chapter. As I get further into this book, I will update this review. Hopefully, it will improve as I go thru it.
Title: Advanced Transact-SQL for SQL Server 2000
Publisher: Apress
Authors: Itzik Ben-Gan, Tom Moreau
Rating: 1/5
There is just one problem with "Advanced Transact-SQL for SQL Server 2000": it is not "advanced" in the slightest. Not atleast compared to Kenneth W. Henderson's "The Guru's Guide to Transact-SQL". I've been coding in the language for about 3 years now and didn't find a thing in it that I didn't already know. Henderson's book, OTOH, opened whole new worlds to me. Don't buy this book. Buy Henderson's book instead -- really, you'll thank me.
Title: Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 with ASP, ColdFusion, and PHP : Training from the Source
Publisher: Macromedia Press
Authors: Jeffrey Bardzell
Rating: 5/5
I recently purchased Dreamweaver MX and found that I could not use it at all. I puchased this book based upon a recommendation from a friend. Now, less than a month later, I have a basic website up and running. If you want to see what this book helped me do, go to, "www.MrGustafson.com" I highly recommend this book. Do not waste your money on any others.
Title: Web Database Applications with PHP & MySQL, 2nd Edition
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Hugh E. Williams
Rating: 3/5
I have to agree with Dave Hilton's review. I love PHP, MySQL and ORA, but as good as this book was to give you a beginning to end HOW TO of creating a database backed web site with the two, it's far from a definitive guide. I'm still waiting for a Canonical PHP book and definitely for a decent MySQL book. There really isn't anything in this book you can't learn from PHP.net, MySQL.org and DevShed, but if you want a nice and compact "course" type book, this one will do. You'll still need to reference PHP.net.Unfortunately, after taking a Database Design class in Oracle, I've become a lot more aware of MySQL's limitations. Yes, it's free, but postgreSQL may be a better choice if some of MySQL's lacking features aren't added in the next version.
Title: High Performance Oracle8 SQL Programming and Tuning
Publisher: Coriolis Group Books
Authors: Pete Cassidy
Rating: 2/5
I've been programming with Oracle for two and a half years now. I felt that a "High Performance" programming book might be able to help me out, so I opted for this book. While some of the suggestions are helpful, I don't find most of them to be all that special. The basic concept of the book is, "use Explain Plan" (ie tune your code) and "Use indexes when you can" - Oooh ! That's insightful! Much of the book is wasted space with the author showing the various permutations of his explain plan output. Four sentences of programming suggestions, followed by two pages of output, doesn't make for particularly interesting reading in my world.Granted, the book gives you more, and in better layout than most Oracle texts out there, but I guess I was hoping for more.
Title: The Rational Guide to: SQL Server Reporting Services (Rational Guides)
Publisher: Rational Press
Authors: Anthony T. Mann
Rating: 5/5
As the sole SQL Server DBA in a 1500 person company a lot of technology changes are left to me to get started. Tony's book helped tremendously to get me up to speed, which allowed me to teach others and we're now in the process of converting our Crystal reports to Reporting Services.
Thanks, Tony!
Title: Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes, Third Edition
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ben Forta
Rating: 5/5
My copy of this book is hopelessly dog-eared and marked with notes. It's gotten the most use out of all my computer books. It teaches the basics of SQL in an easy manner and then is useful as a reference thereafter. It's cheap too. It's bare-bones but hits all the essentials.
