Title: Creating Interactive Web Sites with PHP and Web Services
Publisher: Sybex
Authors: Eric Rosebrock, Eric Rosebrock, Sybex
Rating: 5/5
I'm your basic novice non-programmer type looking for a career change. I lucked into this book at Borders, sat down and looked through it. Well, I came home and have been working my way through this book all night. I've learned more about PHP and MySQL in about six hours time than I had expected to. This book is so incredibly easy to follow that I can't even put it down to sleep. So far, I'm up to Chapter 4 and going fast. Since I read the reviews after I bought the book, I made it a point to place a check mark next to each example that worked. That's all of them. So far, apart from the 'mydb' file that Rosenbrock used as an example in database creation, I've also managed to create a database for my movie collection. Next database will be my extensive library of books! The beauty of Rosenbrock's book is that he teaches how to do the things I actually want to do. Also, he assumes a reasonably intelligent audience. Rosenbrock also introduced me to a little gem, phpMyAdmin that makes MySQL far less painful. I'd been sweating bullets just thinking about getting into MySQL. Well, I'm in it and relishing it, all thanks to Eric Rosenbrock. The back of his book tells that the user level is Intermediate/Advanced, but I think that since his coverage is so painstaking and thorough, it should actually be Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced.I'd recommend that anybody wanting to do PHP and MySQL. I've got to find out what else Eric Rosenbrock has written. The dude is terrific!

This book has been a life saver. Although its a big book, it doesn't contain fluff like some its size. With a variety of sample code to use as a base you will be up and running your site in no time. The index is complete, too.
Title: Oracle PL/SQL Programming, Third Edition

Title: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Data Transformation Services DTS
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Timothy Peterson
Rating: 4/5
I liked the book. It has helped me in any DTS task I undertake. The book gives you everything you need to perform DTS manipulation. Like every book, it cannot provide you with "everything". Therefore, for starters, try this book to give you the knowledge that you need to be a DTS power user. Then supply it with deja.com groups, MDSN and Books Online if needed. There is no need to buy any other book.
Title: Start to Finish Guide to SQL Server Performance Monitoring
Publisher:
Authors: K. Brian Kelley
Rating: 5/5
Brian Kelley has put together a book that I think will benefit just about every database professional working with SQL Server. It brings together most every aspect of tuning a system for optimum performance, including monitoring the Operating System and hardware, monitoring SQL Server, and using the SQL Profiler. This book is one of those unique books that can be read straight through and then kept within arm's reach for use as a reference book. The benefit of the ebook format is that it doesn't take up the shelf space. It's well worth the price.
Title: The SQL Server 7.0 Handbook : A Guide to Microsoft Database Computing
Publisher: Digital Press
Authors: Ken England, Nigel Stanley
Rating: 5/5
There are so many books out there that either assume you know too much or try to explain things with ambiguous language. This book is so clear you can't help, but understand the concepts with a first read.Of course, if you want more detailed information and techniques you may find yourself looking elsewhere. That's OK, because I have still never seen a SQL book that takes the time to clearly explain the basics and give you the foundation you need to confidently pursue the more in-depth aspects of SQL Server.
Title: SQL Server 2000 for Experienced DBAs
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Brian Knight
Rating: 4/5
I just returned this because it is the worst Sql Server book I have ever read. It is full of bad advice and generalizations. The book tries to tell you that it doesn't get into details because it assumes only experienced DBAs will read it, but the real story is that it glosses over lots of important details and doesn't tell you anything that isn't already in the books online. Just a terrible, terrible book.
Title: Advanced PHP Programming
Publisher: Sams
Authors: George Schlossnagle
Rating: 5/5
This book introduces and elaborates on very good programming practices that not many self-made programmers are aware of. I've had contact with some 5 or 6 other programming languages at university and I've had my share of contact with good programming practices, but they were never presented to me so clear-cut and in a so motivating way as in this book. That, alongside with the fact that I just love PHP, makes this the absolutely most important book I would recommend to any fellow programmer. This book doesn't teach PHP, it teaches efficiency, maintainability and some really good programming notions. The fact that it uses PHP as a vehicle is just the icing on the cake. The source code used is manytimes from real open source projects, a nice effort from the author.
Oh, and I would also like to mention the author's style of writing: he comes across as a very open-minded individual who routinely recognises his own errors and isn't in any way superior to the rest of us not-so-enlightned programmers.
On a final note, let me just say I wish my copy of this book would magically turn into a spell-checked hardcover edition :)
