Title: The Practical SQL Handbook: Using Structured Query Language (3rd Edition)
Publisher: Pearson Education
Authors: Judith S. Bowman, Sandra L. Emerson, Marcy Darnovsky
Rating: 5/5
The book's approach and explanations are fantastic. I haveextensive experience with Access but none at all with real programmingand this book was exactly what I needed. However the cd containing the sample database and runtime version of SQL Anywhere is a huge mistake. Some of the first commands in the book will not work with this version (despite the author's "guarantees"). You must download a newer version from sybase before you can proceed. Thanks to GypsyPilot for that info!
Title: Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes, Third Edition
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ben Forta
Rating: 5/5
Before I picked up this book, SQL and databases in general petrified me. But once I started reading it, I asked myself why I had waited so long to learn about SQL. Ben Forta 'demystifies' SQL and does it in a way that simplifies learning about this database language. True to its name, this is a book that can be read quickly.Ben keeps all concepts clear and simple. By the time I'd finished the book, I had a basic understanding of SQL and realized my own fears had kept me from learning about it.While I'm not ready to program in SQL, this book has now allowed me to at least be conversant in it and has given me a good general understanding about this database language.
Title: MCSE/MCSD: SQL Server 7 Database Design Study Guide
Publisher: Sybex Inc
Authors: Kevin Hough
Rating: 2/5
Of course, there are errors in the book, but I get use to debug the braindump questions. Therefore, a few errors is no big problem to me.Although the book always remind you on the Microsoft Exam Objective, you cannot rely on it. For example, the chapter 10, talking about cursor. You can find the word INSENSITIVE once and a phrase about it. Read the BOL and you will know the difference. No mention about the global and local of cursor except in the Microsoft Exam Objective. You would not know how to select the cursor types with this book. Using only this book you cannot answer questions about the Profile, Freetexttable and containstable. But the chapters in bcp, indexing, retrieval techniques, view are quite good.
Title: Learn Google
Publisher: Wordware Publishing, Inc.
Authors: Michael Busby
Rating: 5/5
Michael Busby's new Book Learn Google helped me to catch on quickly to the fundamentals of Google that go beyond the simple "type in key words" searching. I found the writing very clear and concise, not filled with technical clutter, and the examples in latter parts of the book are easy to follow and enlightening in terms of the more advanced Google search features such as using the phone book, something not found easily in other references.
Title: Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 21 Days (4th Edition)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ron Plew, Ryan Stephens
Rating: 3/5
The book is quite good. I didn't actually need to key in a lot of the data as the examples made perfect sense. It makes for a good read, and you don't really even need to have the computer on -- as the examples are logical. It would have been nice had the author allowed downloading of the scripts to create the db's.
Title: Professional PHP Programming
Publisher:
Authors: Jesus Castagnetto, Sascha Schumann, Harish Rawat, Chris Scollo, Deepak T. Veliath
Rating: 5/5
Great book. Covers where to get PHP, installation, syntax, and a myriad of uses from the simple to the quite complex. Reads easily, not boring, but gets the point across very well. Spreadloads coverate evenly between Microsoft and Unix platforms; i.e., users from either OS will find this book equally useful. Also covers security, extending capability via add on modules and a whole bunch more. It would be very difficult to write a better book than this on PHP. Well worth the money.
Title: McSe: SQL Server 7 Database Design (The Training Guide Series)
Publisher: New Riders Publishing
Authors: David Besch, Sean Baird, Chris Miller, Denis Darveau, Wayne Smith, Deanna Townsend
Rating: 3/5
This book covers the important areas of the exam and is certainly worth purchasing as a study aid - however rely more on plenty of hands on experience to pass. The tests within the book and on the CD-Rom were OK but don't expect them to strongly resemble the actual exam. They also contain a number of errors.
Title: Oracle9i PL/SQL: A Developer's Guide
Publisher: Apress
Authors: Bulusu Lakshman
Rating: 4/5
I like the organization of this book as well as its focus on Oracle 9i's new PL/SQL functionality. If you have prior experience with PL/SQL and need to get up to speed with the latest features quickly, this is the right book for you. I like the coverage on Native Dynamic SQL, Bulk Binds, and Object Relational features. The sample code is very helpful to demo the new language syntax. To me this book has been serving as a handy reference as I code for Oracle 9i for the first time.
Title: PHP Black Book
Publisher: Coriolis Group Books
Authors: Peter Moulding
Rating: 1/5
i read this book , i read this book again and i read this book thrice . except for a few things there is nothing that helped me . Most of the examples are poor to follow and many of them do not work .the only thing that can be learnt from the book is that there's nobody else in the world who can program better than Peter Moulding . Peter Moulding is a guru , he has learnt 50 websites , 25 years of experience , lots of languages etc. etc. etc. and other people who make websites are foolish but call themselves 'experts' .I am not writing this because of frustration but thats how the book really is
