Title: Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes, Third Edition
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ben Forta
Rating: 5/5
I am new to SQL and have found exactly what I needed in this little book : an invaluable introduction. Of course, as the author himself did, do try every single example in the book even the not-so-optimized ones.
Title: Oracle SQL Interactive Workbook (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR
Authors: Alice Rischert
Rating: 5/5
I teach college computer classes, although my BA & MA are in linguistics. The only computer course I've actually taken was a non-credit course in Oracle SQL. I was pretty satisfied with it.
I'm only in lab 2 of 16 in this book, and have already learned MANY new things! It's very well written, giving you a little, testing you a little, etc. I strongly recommend it.
Title: SQL Unleashed, Second Edition (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Sakhr Youness
Rating: 1/5
Chapter One is so badly written without clear explanationsthat unless you already are very familiar with SQL AND have it loadedon a system at home/work you will be confused at what the author is attempting to convey. Further several of the illustrations do not match the actual program once loaded. Bottom Line: leave this book on the shelf and spend your money on something that will really help you.
Title: Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Kalen Delaney
Rating: 1/5
I really get tired of books that just take people's money. This one is just a repeat of the version 7 book. There's nothing new here at all. Some pages are word-for-word with the previous one. That would be okay if it was sold as a second edition but it's not. I bought it expecting the new features in 2000 to be covered but they're not. No SQLXML, no multi-instancing - none of it. A real disappointment.
Title: Oracle PL/SQL Interactive Workbook (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR
Authors: Benjamin Rosenzweig, Elena Silvestrova
Rating: 5/5
I paid 2000 bucks for Oracle's classroom training, then I bought this book and guess what? This book is better! Because it also goes beyond the beginning Oracle class to cover what is in the "Program Units" class as well. As for the website, Prentice Hall changed their author url's but now they have a 'redirect' to the correct site, which happens to be (...) . Again, save your money if you have to pay for your courses yourself, this book replaces "Beginning SQL & PL/SQL", "Advanced SQL", and "Program Units". There! I just saved you (2000+1700+895)=$4595.00 plus hotel and plane fare and lost wages/vacation time!Aunty Violet
Title: MCDBA SQL Server 7 Database Design, Study Guide (Exam 70-29)
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Companies Rating: 2/5
The title says alot, it is a study guide, and effective at that. It is not a full course on SQL Server Database Design. You must have a previous understanding of databases, and have the software to practice with. Sure, there are some slight errors, but they are obvious typos, and should get the brain working. I used this to focus on the subjects to be covered in the exam. Not for the newcomer to SQL Server.
Title: Beginning PHP 5 and MySQL E-Commerce: From Novice to Professional
Publisher: Apress
Authors: Cristian Darie, Mihai Bucica
Rating: 5/5
The author Cristian Darie comes to my attention due to the best seller book "Beginning Asp.net 1.1 E -Commerce". I was looking for books to guide me though some asp.net web project in depth, and at a professional approach. I searched the Internet, and almost all forums unanimously agreed that the book be on the top. I made the purchase after only 30 minutes on the internet. I thanks those authors for their ambition to write the best. This makes our life easier.
Cristian Darie has the talent to speak the word that makes sense. He has a preemptive writing style, every word he write targets at the readers. When reading his book, I do not have much pain as normally would. Instead, I enjoyed. I found E -Commerce is a field the author is so familiar with, in fact, he deals with the subjects skillfully.
Another reason why Cristian Darie writes the most popular programming books, is he chose a very specific area in which he has solid skills and experience, and he targets at general public. From "building Web Site with Asp.net Community Start Kit", to "The programmer's Guide to SQL", to "Beginning Asp.net 1.1 E -Commerce", to now "Beginning PHP5 and MySQL e-Commerce". He wrote the books progressively, consistent with his accumulative experience.
The new book "beginning PHP5 and MySQL e-Commerce", has a similar structure as its Asp.net version. But Cristian Darie, add two more chapters to make PHP counterpart even more appealing. Chapter 15 adds a product review system to the e-commerce site. Chapter 16 integrate Amazon Web services to the web site, so make it possible to sell Amazon products through the web site. Cristian Darie thinks about value, and he is watching the industry closely.
Title: Web Application Development with PHP 4.0 (with CD-ROM)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Tobias Ratschiller, Till Gerken
Rating: 4/5
I am a beginner and this book is way too advanced for me. This book is for those who already know everything about PHP but need a way to apply it in a Professional Application. It explains how to plan, implement and launch a project on a commercial level as a true professional.
Title: Setting Up LAMP: Getting Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP Working Together
Publisher: Sybex
Authors: Eric Rosebrock, Eric Filson, Eric Filson
Rating: 5/5
I've been using PHP and MySQL for sometime now, but I've always depended on having a system administrator there to set everything up, costing my small company time and money. Not anymore. I've got to say that this book honestly taught me exactly what I needed to know to setup Linux which I thought I'd never do on my own, it also showed me not just how to get Linux Apache MySQL and PHP installed, but installed right and ready for production.
Two thumbs up for Eric Rosebrock on his second book. I did read the first book he wrote "Creating Interactive Web Sites with PHP and Web Services" which was also a worthwhile read. On this new book, he really did take it to another level. Though-out the book, everything is spoken plainly and with humor so even an old guy like myself can understand and enjoy it cover to cover.
I've read a few linux books in my day, but most seem either too dull or out dated before I even finish. This book was impressive and dealed with new technologies like Red Hat Linux's Fedora core 2. Another thing worth noting was that, although the book is titled Setting Up LAMP, it deals with more then just those components, it's rather well rounded as it deals with setting up a iptables firewall, setting up a mail server and other administration work that normally requires a book in itself.
Hope this review helps those looking for a good LAMP book. In closing, I'd like to say I've since fired my in house linux guru. I can do it all myself now.

You don't know how powerful Google is until you read Google Hacking for Penetration Testers.
This is a great book!
