Title: SQL In A Nutshell, 2nd Edition
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Kevin Kline, Daniel Kline, Brand Hunt
Rating: 5/5
This is the book that I would like to recommend to anyone with any degree of SQL knowledge. I am familiar with the Author's other work. This one is also a continuation of a great lineage of SQL books by the author. Definitely a winner!
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Database Administrator's Guidebook
Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR
Authors: Carl H. Speshock
Rating: 3/5
I bought it reading all the good reviews about it being touted as a "Book for all DBA's". I would definitely disagree. It's definitely a book for beginners. As a book for the beginner DBA, it does a good job of going through all the tasks that a DBA need to do, and shows all the things that SQL 2000 can do. But the information on each aspect of SQL is glassed over. It doesn't get into much detail. But for what it does cover, is well written and well-organized. So, as a beginner book, I would give it a 4-5 star rating, but as a book for all DBA's, it's 1-star. I averaged the two to get my official rating -- a 3-star.
Title: Hitchhiker's Guide to Visual Basic & SQL Server: William R. Vaughn (Microsoft Programming Series)
Publisher: Microsoft Pr
Authors: William Vaughn
Rating: 4/5
The coverage of DAO/RDO was absolutely brilliant,I found it more informative than microsoft's own manuals and help files. Williams sense of humour was great as well, I hope he is busy somewhere giving us another guide to Visual Basic ADO and SQL Server. Thanks for a great book
Title: Apache: the Definitive Guide (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Ben Laurie, Peter Laurie
Rating: 5/5
This is a good starting place for the admin that is only hosting a few sites and doesn't need to do anything extreme or fancy. This is not for the admin that has to deal with the in-depth intricacies that go with hosting sites for a major hosting company or ISP, although, it does make an ok reference manual to do quick lookups of the basics. If I had to buy it again, I would look for a used copy, but I would buy it.
Title: Visual Basic Developer's Guide to E-Commerce with ASP and SQL Server

Good enough to learn the basics of ASP and E-Commerce.
Title: Sybase SQL Server 11 Unleashed
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ray Rankins, Jeff Garbus, David Solomon, Bennett W. McEwan
Rating: 5/5
This is an excellent Sybase book (probably the best one on the topic), however I still have to go to sybooks.sybase.com for certain things. For example, sp_changedbowner (to change a database owner) isn't mentioned anywhere.
Title: MCSD: SQL Server 6.5 Database Design Study Guide

I have already picked through Ken Hough's other book (VB Developer) so I was excited about this one. I haven't been disappointed. I installed SQL Server and have been working through the chapters. END

Title: Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft SQL Server 7 in 21 Days
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Richard Waymire, Rick Sawtell
Rating: 5/5
I am (by today's standard) an experienced SQL Developer/DBA (among others), and this book has been by my side ever since I started to work with SQL Server 7.I agree with many that the TYS series is not very consistent when it comes to delivering the quality you'd expect, but If I were to judge them by this book, I would have had a very tall pile of TYS books. Additionally this book is an EXCELLENT value for the price!.The way the book is organized is excellent. Clear concise chapters with Excellent examples, no beating around the bushes, in an easy to follow style. The logical sequence of these is as good, clear and unpolluted as the content itself.Always excellent as a reference, it is always in my bookshelf at work withing hands reach, and even though some of its contents is very elementary for my level of expertise, it is always good to have a good source to go back to for a good wiff of the basics that we sometimes forget while inmersing ourselves in our day to day mundane tasks.SQL Server 7 may not be the current version of the product as of the date of this review, but good books always go beyond the product and into the core of the subject matter, and SQL is a prime example of this. This book does a great job of exposing the elements underneath the shell of the product and as such will be a valuable asset in years to come.Guillermo Salas MCSE, MCDBA, CNA
Title: OCA/OCP: Introduction to Oracle9i SQL Study Guide
Publisher: Sybex
Authors: Chip Dawes, Biju Thomas, Chip Dawes, Biju Thomas
Rating: 3/5
I think that with these Oracle certifications there is confusion as to who these exams are geared toward.I just got done taking the first test and I passed but I believe that is because I've had some education and experience with Oracle. This book is a great REVIEW tool for those of us who know how to write medium level and up SQL queries. The book is strait forward, easy to understand, and pretty thorough. However, the actual test requires a little bit of knowledge beyond the basics of what is written in the book. I thought the questions in the practice exams where very good, and in some cases, harder than the ones on the actual exam. This book is NOT for people who are just trying to learn Oracle for the first time or who only have limited knowledge of SQL, RDBM theory, or programming knowledge. Here are some questions you should ask yourself before starting the exam process:Can you write a SQL statement with a subquery?
Do you know what a function does?
What is the order of a select statement? For those of you who are wondering my background is I have a BS in Computer Science and two years of Oracle experience and I still thought this test was hard.I hope this helps with your selection.
