Title: SQL from the Ground Up
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Companies
Authors: Mary Pyefinch
Rating: 5/5
I am a new programmer and this book helped me get a clue on what you need to program a database. I downloaded the errata file from Osborne and had no problems working the samples. It was fun to read not as boring as some of the other books I have been reading. I enjoyed the author's insight into what it takes to create an application that end user's want and can use. Developing our project application in Access was also useful because that is what I use on the job. Until I read this book, I was afraid to use more than one or two tables in my queries. I am not anymore!
Title: Optimizing Transact-SQL : Advanced Programming Techniques
Publisher: SQL Forum Press
Authors: David Rozenshtein, Anatoly Abramovich, Eugene Birger
Rating: 1/5
The chief aim of a technical book should be to show how to do something. Technical books are "how-to" books -- that's why people buy them. I have no use for a book that demonstrates essoteric techniques that are next to useless in the real world. For it's price, this book has a very low value to the SQL practitioner. Recommend that you skip this one altogether.
Title: MCDBA Administering SQL Server 2000 Study Guide (Exam 70-228)
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Joyjit Mukherjee
Rating: 1/5
I chose this book because of a few good reviews on this site, coupled with my success using other certification guides from Osborne. Up until now, I would have continued purchasing Osborne books. However, this book is VERY poorly written. There are blatant grammatical errors, and many of the sentences are so poorly written that, at times, my friend (who is an MCDBA) could not understand some of the concepts that the author was attempting to illustrate. If you are looking for good books to study for 070-228, you should definitely look elsewhere!
Title: Php Fast & Easy Web Development (Fast & Easy Web Development)
Publisher: Premier Press
Authors: Julie C. Meloni
Rating: 5/5
I love this book.. Its really great to get started with. I only found a few misprints. I continue to refer to it. It would be nice if julie would update it with a few more tips and updated versions of apache, php, mysql. other than that for those just starting out its a perfect first step.

I started out learning PL/SQL with this book but switched to "Teach Yourself PL/SQL in 21 Days." I found the latter much better for learning. The chapters were broken up into reasonable lenghts and it had lots of examples. Oracle8 PL/SQL Programming looks more complete but its organization better for use as a reference text than for learning.

Title: Sams Teach Yourself PHP in 24 Hours, Third Edition
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Matt Zandstra
Rating: 3/5
It could be better... But it's got enough if you know programming in any other language to catch on.
Title: Advanced Transact-SQL for SQL Server 2000
Publisher: Apress
Authors: Itzik Ben-Gan, Tom Moreau
Rating: 1/5
Having read a few other T-SQL books, I can honestly say this is the worst one of the bunch. It's poorly written and the techniques it shows are not advanced in the least. You get the impression that these guys do not actually work in the "trenches" they mention so often. This is in the top ten of the worst computer books I've ever had the misfortune to buy.
Title: SQL Server Developer's Guide to OLAP with Analysis Services
Publisher: Sybex
Authors: Mike Gunderloy, Tim Sneath
Rating: 5/5
Microsoft's Analysis Services brings Data Mining and OLAP to the masses. One of the hardest challenges was finding an authoritative guide - this book does an excellent job to rectify the challenge.Microsoft's Analysis Services makes business intelligence extremely easy to undertake and perform; without a high investment cost. Often OLAP/Data Mining has been made to seem more complicate than necessary. Until recently, the cost of installing an OLAP solution could run into thousands per seat - plus the presence of the prerequisite consultant from the vendor being onsite for many months.Analysis Services demystifies data analytics in a manner that the Rosetta Stone demystified hieroglyphs. And this book makes it very simple to understand Microsoft's Analysis Services. To gain the most from this book, readers should generally already have an understanding of what OLAP, Data Mining, Data Warehousing are. Although this is not compulsory, it helps. For those already familiar with OLAP, ROLAP, Clustering etc; this book will be a very gentle and pleasant read. It will enable you to almost immediately get cracking with Microsoft's Analysis Services.
Title: Core PHP Programming, Third Edition
Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR
Authors: Leon Atkinson, Zeev Suraski
Rating: 5/5
It has been a great pleasure reading and learning from this book. The author Leon Atkinson has been an inspiration to me to learn this programming language. Without a doubt I believe this to be the best source for information and coding options on PHP. If you really want the very best resource for your own PHP projects you won't be sorry if you purchase this guide.
