Welling and Thomson hit the nail on the head with this book. The only place to go from this book is into the black and yellow php5 references written by Gilmore and Darie. Start here and grow. The code is clear. The sample code is correct. Yhe included CD includes everything you'll need as a nivice and more.
1 star for code.
1 star for clarity.
1 star for editorial acumen.
1 star for relevance.

Title: PHP Fast & Easy Web Development, 2nd Edition
Publisher: Muska & Lipman/Premier-Trade
Authors: Julie C. Meloni
Rating: 2/5
This book has too many codes that do not function. If you do not want to waste time trying to figure out the wrong codes, do not buy this horrible book. In all appearances, the authors did not test the codes even once.
Title: MCSE Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Database Design and Implementation: Readiness Review Exam 70-229 (Pro-Certification)
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Sharon Bjeletich, Eddy Hahn
Rating: 1/5
If you are currently a Database Administrator or Analyst, this book is good at helping you prepare for the exam. However, if you are expecting an indepth resource on the subject you will be disappointed. The only downfall to these types of books is the fact they give you enough examples to pass the test but not enough real world experience. This book gives you the question, you try to answer and then it gives you Microsoft's correct answer (not necessarily real world). The book does not go into detail regarding its answers. Overall a good book and cd to prepare for the test (rated 3 1/2 stars but not available as a rating). Most likely you will need additional resources to help you prepare.

Peter Wainwright and the co-authors combine a vast knowledge of the Apache webserver with the talent to share it to a mixed audience. They also manage to combine some of the many possibilities of the software into new solutions.I used this book as part of an Apache course and was happy to find many of the answers to unexpected questions from students on special matters.

Title: Beginning PHP 5 and MySQL: From Novice to Professional
Publisher: Apress
Authors: W. J. Gilmore
Rating: 3/5
If you are looking for a comprehensive text on PHP and do NOT have a programming background, you may want to start somewhere other than this volume. It is definitely NOT geared toward the rank amateur. I got this book to learn PHP and more specifically to help me integrate forms better into my Web pages. Sadly, 'Chapter 11: Forms and Navigational Clues' has only about ten pages of PHP as it relates to forms and half of that is semi-useful scripting examples. I'm sure this book is a fantastic reference if you are already familiar with programming but if you are a PHP novice, like I am, this book is not where you want to start.
Title: SQL: The Complete Reference, Second Edition
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: James R Groff, Paul N. Weinberg
Rating: 5/5
First let me tell you why NOT TO BUY this book: You want to learn how to create SQL statements- there are lots of SQL manuals that are better, and easier to use as a reference because they are lighter in pounds. You want to learn advanced issues in creating a database- if you are that advanced you should buy a book about the particular issue you need help with. Now let me to you WHY TO BUY this book: If you are just building databases complex enough to get into real trouble (and that happens a lot sooner than you may think) you must read this book. It gives an overview of all the problems you need to think about. Very simple databases can get into trouble if you aren't very careful about data integrity and security. This book will raise warning-flags in your head- to find out what do about those warning-flags, however, you may need to go to a book specifically about your application or problem.
Title: XML and PHP

I've been reading the book, and had a feeling it explained a lot.
Finally, i could use it, but the code used is very outdated (01-2005). That's why i visited their website.
as the book refers to the site often.

Title: SQL Server 2000: The Complete Reference
Publisher: Osborne/McGraw-Hill
Authors: Jeffrey Shapiro
Rating: 1/5
This is a great book. Information is organized and flows very well. With an MCP in Data Warehousing, this book provided me a really good view of "SQL Server Land". Others have been critical about the depth of content, but the author makes it very clear that some topics are too big for this type of book, with over 900 pages- it's provides plenty. In addition, the author interjects humor that makes reading more pleasurable. This is the best SQL Server book I have read yet!
