This is a great book, two years ago. I have spent more time and energy than I wish over the last two months trying to get the syntax differences down, and hunt down bugs in the code I'm writing. A new edition is out expected out in August, in which PHP 4.2 and MySQL 4.1 are to be covered. While no published book will keep up with the advancing of technologies that are standards today, this new edition will be much much closer to what is in use right now.Wait if you can, otherwise, you're in for a headache.

Well the book may not be for beginners but Freeze demonstrates a lot of the power of VB6 and SQL7. The book is worth it just for the coverage of web classes. Although I will not agree with Freeze that VB6 web classes are quicker to develop applications than InterDev 6. You might find deploying web classes more difficult and not worth it. Hey have some fun.

This book is a great reference for advanced PHP developers, and easy enough for beginners. It has some nice examples for each function, and gives some good applications for PHP. This book is a must for any web developer.

Rob Vieira provides an excellent overview of Microsoft's latest entry into the Enterprise Database Market. Granted this book might be too basic for some readers but anyone who has a basic understanding of SQL or who has lightly used previous versions of SQL will find this book invaluable. Our organization is always looking for books that provide a good mechanism for developers to broaden their skills, Vieira'a writing style and choice of content makes this just such a book.

Although the book covers the major features it offers little over the online help. What is missing is the overall context or a complete example that might help understanding of how to put everything together into a working application. When it presents triggers and stored procedures the examples are so basic as to not explore the potential power. The chapter on relational database design was particularly lacking in ideas or references. Some of the more powerful features such as metadata and analysis services are barely mentioned. The book did introduce the major administrative functions well. If you do buy the book, do go the authors web site described in the book, to get the "bonus" chapters on installation and security, which should also help a new administrator.

In some ways I agree with the other comments made about this book. It has organizational problems, BUT it is packed with the one thing most programmers are looking for: tons of code. If you are trying to pick up VB/SQL Server programming you'll will find code and tips in here that will help you. But you'll need to get off the start line by yourself, this book won't help you there but once you can do a little SQL Server work this book will push you to the next level.

With over twenty years in large scale IT development using Java/C++/C/Assembly languages on Unix/Windows 2000/NT platforms, but a neophyte with PL/SQL, I needed a PL/SQL package that would assume no background knowledge in PL/SQL, get me up to speed fast, and at the same time be comprehensive. In other words, I wanted everything. This package no only satisfied this need, but opened up new avenues of thought concerning approaches to database programming. The book is simply matchless (it should get 6 stars--an extra star for the terrific exercises that incorporate hidden pearls of IT wisdom), and yes I have perused others on the market. Ms. Silvestrova demonstrates that she is a consummate professional. The flow of the book, depth of the hands-on exercises, and scope of material is an inimitable combination. This so far may sound over-glowing, but a workman is worthy of her hire. I would recommend this package to any introductory or middle level PL/SQL student. If you desire to be a competent PL/SQL professional, look no further. If you desire to have a guide that provides you with a solid answer to specific types of PL/SQL problems, look no further. However, if you seek a slick product that spoon feeds you programming palaver (under the guise of teaching), fly you fool: you have many under-performing options available.

I disagree with the reviewer who said this book is lacking an index. This book *is* an index, and not a terribly helpful one.A Nutshell-type book makes more sense for a robust scripting tool. PHP is not a trivial or admin-oriented language; if you want to sell *any* reader on its virtues, you have to show what the language can do.As a co-author of the The Java 2 Certification Study Guide, I can tell you exactly what readers think of a list of calls in print -- we used to have 200+ pages of that in the back of our book. Anyone who had anything to say about it called it filler, and they were right.Make a PHP Nutshell book, and get someone like Flanagan to write it. Believe me, we'll buy it. Admittedly,I wasn't expecting a whole lot more than I got for the price of this book. But when an info-holic has a book he won't crack twice on a long plane ride, something's wrong with the book. :-)

It's amazing to see that the same company that wrote the otherwise worthless book, "Apache: The Definitive Guide," could have published an outstanding book such as this one. I love O'Reilly, hated the original Apache book, *love* this one =) Excellent work!
