Rating: 5/5
We are a major player in the real estate industry. Our web site has millions of visits per day and has positioned itself as the focal point of listing finding. One recent requirement was to allow web users to subscribe to our data and be notified upon a listing change or new listing in an area. We immediately started looked at sql server 2000 notification services. The starting point for research was "The Rational Guide to SQL Server Notification Services". This is a great resource and its content has allowed our developers to rapidly build a custom solution for our needs. Great buy. Great technical content.
Title: PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Web Sites: Visual QuickPro Guide
Publisher: Peachpit Press
Authors: Larry Ullman
Rating: 5/5
This is a great book for those that are willing to learn and are generally competent PC users (not really for absoloute beginners). This book has taught me a great deal and helped me to create the dynamic website I wanted.
I also got great assisstance at the author's website from himself and others there willing to help.
Title: Google Hacks
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Tara Calishain, Rael Dornfest
Rating: 3/5
If you are looking for a compilation of googling tips and tricks in a neatly bound format, with a useful index and great visuals, this little collection is as good as it gets. The book is expected O'Reilly cadre -- crisply written by pros who aren't winging it.Yet, it still puzzles me why this info was necessary in a book form, particularly given the most likely intended audience. Most or even ALL of this info is available either on Google itself, especially on "Google Labs", or on frequently read websites such as Slashdot or Kuro5hin. Recommended if you want to skip some on-computer reading, but I am still waiting to find tricks here that I haven't found elsewhere on the net for a whopping $0.00.
Title: Apache Jakarta-Tomcat
Publisher: Apress
Authors: James Goodwill
Rating: 5/5
I really got a lot out of this book. It covers many of the more useful Tomcat subjects. There is a focus on the use of Tomcat as it relates to the developer, but that is what I am so it was perfect for me.One of the more useful chapters was the chapter covering Tomcat and the Apache SOAP project. Great Book James.
Title: PHP Pocket Reference, 2nd Edition
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Rasmus Lerdorf
Rating: 5/5
Just like many of the other ORA Reference books this one doesnt fail to deliver. No PHP developer should be without it, it's an excellent quick reference, very well set out. You'll soon be using the best PHP commands and functions for the job. Be sure to learn a little PHP before buying this book however, otherwise it will go to waste until you're at least a little comfortable with the language !It's cheap too ! Go get it !
Title: Web Programming in Python: Techniques for Integrating Linux, Apache and MySQL
Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR
Authors: George K. Thiruvathukal, Thomas W. Christopher, John P. Shafaee
Rating: 2/5
This books was a major disappointment. The ideas seem pretty solid, but the book no longer matches the code that is available online. The downloads are a mess. The book says to install slither using the instructions in the download, but there are no instructions in the download. Two users posted requests over a year ago for these instructions and the requests were totally ignored. In fact not much has happened over the past year. It really seems as if the authors have moved on. Slither seems to be dead.On another note - this book is very academic. For example, there is a couple of pages of discussion about the different theorectical ways to design databases. But my needs are so simple, that I already knew I was going to use MySQL, so I just did not care about this discussion. Unfortunately there are lots of discussions like that in this book. So if you just wanna get something done fast, this might not be the book for you.
Title: Mastering PHP 4.1 with CDROM
Publisher: Sybex
Authors: Jeremy Allen, Charles Hornberger
Rating: 3/5
This book is a great book if you want to learn php. It goes through all of the basics and adds a lot of detail if you choose to really dig in. The index is huge and has answers to 99% of the questions I have. The attached CD really helps a lot too, since you can see the code and interact with it. A book doesn't always cut it. I recommend this book to any php newcomer and to anyone who wants a guide to this great language.
The section on SQL and database interaction also helps for those who want to work on interactive sites and storing user data. This book is the best php book I have come across yet.
Title: SQL Server 2000 Stored Procedure Programming
Publisher: Osborne/McGraw-Hill
Authors: Dejan Sunderic, Tom Woodhead
Rating: 5/5
What I like most about this book is that the authors don't waste time (mine and theirs) with the trivial elements of TSQL such as select, insert, update and delete statements. Instead we get waluable information about how to use complex elements such as IF, WHILE, CURSOR, FUNCTION, new triggers, new data types and XML. But best of all, they showed me how to bring all of these elements together in stored procedures. I'd call this one a must have for SQL Server developers.
Title: SQL Server The Complete Reference
Publisher: Osborne Publishing
Authors: Gayle Coffman
Rating: 5/5
As a experienced mainframe database programmer making a shift to the client server environment, I found it hard to come to terms with the material. My personal opinion is that Coffman has a problem getting the subject matter across to all but the most seasoned SQL Server professional. Most of what is in the text may be found within the books on line facility.I have resorted to the book by Otey and Conte 'SQL Server 7 Developer's Guide' which I found far superior, covering SQL Server 7 from the Development and Maintenance points of view, and easy to understand. .....Steve Simon
Title: MCSE/MCSD: SQL Server 7 Database Design Study Guide
Publisher: Sybex Inc
Authors: Kevin Hough
Rating: 1/5
I am speechless. I can't say much! This book is as good as the study guide at the cramsession website! It can't do more....It simply misses the targets by WAY too much! PLEASE DON'T BUY THIS BOOK! I beg you not to destroy those 100 (im talkin about the test fee those 40 bucks that this book is worth are surely wasted) bucks. What i would suggest is that you do the Transcender exams and buy the book: Professional SQL Server 7.0 Programming....written by Robert viera....published by wrox.
