Title: Google Pocket Guide
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Tara Calishain, Rael Dornfest, DJ Adams
Rating: 5/5
I was interested in this book from the beginning, and I wasn't disappointed. Though I'm basically a computer power user, this book offered tons of info I didn't know about Google.
Title: Hitchhiker's Guide to Visual Basic and SQL Server
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: William R. Vaughn
Rating: 5/5
This book is excellent if you understood COM concept. This book requires readers totally understand COM and be familiar with the basic things in database programming in VB. If you are not, don't buy this book and look for others related to COM and VB database programming. This book should be last one to be read in the field of VB programming in DB.This book successfully described the architecture, the organization, the principles, the mechnisms of the system which is made from VB and SQL Server. After read this book, I think it is not neccessary to seek for others to help you understand MS DB programming. This book really shoot out everything, even include something from Microsoft "black-box".Again,this book is the best one in the field of VB DB programming as far as I know.
Title: Oracle PL/SQL 101

Rating: 1/5
Very rudimentary this book provides information only for the completely uninitiated oracle user. Additionally there is no CD or downloadable code you better be a very good typist.
Title: Professional PHP Programming
Publisher:
Authors: Jesus Castagnetto, Sascha Schumann, Harish Rawat, Chris Scollo, Deepak T. Veliath
Rating: 4/5
the authors are experienced programmers and try to explain with good examples the principles of programming. php is described very thorough. even short side steps to installation procedures and mysql are made.i think it is best used for the beginner or middle-advanced programmer to get a feel for the php script language. i had no problems with it.the chapters are easy to read and have a lot of examples. i only encountered problems when i wanted to use the downloaded example code. i had to lay my hands on the code. so only 4 stars.the examples in the book are very near to website development reality (database driven shopping baskets, user registrations, etc.) and i like the clear programming style.
Title: Beginning E-Commerce with Visual Basic, ASP, SQL Server 7.0 and MTS
Publisher: Peer Information
Authors: Matthew Reynolds
Rating: 5/5
I read a lot of computer books. Most of them are either too theoretical or not hands-on. But I'm so pleased that I have chosen this book. It is very praticle and I wish I had this earlier.
Title: Apache: The Definitive Guide (3rd Edition)
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Ben Laurie, Peter Laurie
Rating: 2/5
Just as an intro, I am likely to be biased towards this book because it does not cover topics that are particularly helpful to me at this time.If you are a System Administrator, get this book. It will help you configure Apache down to great detail. If you are a programmer, get the online information. It is more up to date. This book did increase my knowledge of security for Apache, as security is covered well in this book. It covers troubleshooting for both Unix and Windows (As if a Windows system is secure enough to run a web server) Systems. As I am a programmer in the Java Language, I was disappointed to see that the authors pushed toward using scripting languages with Apache rather than full programming languages. This will limit what you can do with the Apache Server. This is a very sad commentary. Also, being a programmer, I am more interested in the API's rather than the configuration of a Web Server. Now that the book is already outdated, the API's in the book are no good to me. So I use the API's provided with the Apache documentation. Not to mention, the authors recommend using Java 1.1. It has been several years since Java 1.2 has even been released. Did the authors do their research on Java before they printed the book? This book covers the installation and configuration of mod_perl and Tomcat/j_serv, this was just fine for mod_perl (a scripting language), but did not help my cause, as I use Tomcat, and the authors are not very knowledgeable for Java based applications.
Title: DB2 Universal Database SQL Developer's Guide
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Companies
Authors: Roger E. Sanders, Roger Sanders
Rating: 5/5
We have an environment from junior programmers to system analysts. We bought this book about six months ago so a number of people have had an opportunity to look at it. This book has been 'worth its weight in gold'. All levels of people that have used it, commented on the very user friendly manner the book is written in as well as the clear and to the point descriptions. Whether you are just starting out with SQL or are an experienced programmer, all have found this book helpful. My compliments to Mr. Sanders.
Title: Core PHP Programming: Using PHP to Build Dynamic Web Sites (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Pearson Education
Authors: Leon Atkinson
Rating: 2/5
I have grown to love the Core series. I learned Java from Core Java 2 and Servlets/JSP from Core Servlets and JavaServerPages. Occasionally the Core series has disappointed me a bit (Core JSP) but never this badly. This book is awful. I have experience doing serverside Java/JSP, using MySQL, Tomcat and other Open Source products/libraries. But when I needed info on doing stuff with PHP, I got nowhere with this book. It is a non-comprehensive reference, when other Core books have been good and to-the-point guides. I bought the book by Luke Welling and Laura Thomson, "PHP and MySQL Web Development" and found it to be a LOT better. Actually, it is one of the best programming guides I've ever read.
Title: Php 4 Bible (Bible (Wiley))
Publisher: Hungry Minds
Authors: Tim Converse, Joyce Park
Rating: 5/5
I just had a chance to check out this book today. The language section was very complete and entirely appropriate for a book that is called the "PHP Bible." Also, they offer a basic guide to SQL which is cool, and focus on the mySQL platform which is the most common and documented platform for using PHP. I thought it was a nice package! Beginners should check out Php Fast & Easy Web Development by Julie Meloni and combine it with the language reference in "PHP Bible" and the O'Reilly pocket guide too. Then you're all set for about $55.00.
Title: PHP and MySQL Web Development
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Luke Welling, Laura Thomson
Rating: 5/5
I finally found a book that teaches you what you need to know and not what this other book writers know. I've been trying to learn PHP and MySql on my own and this book is putting me in the right track. It also throws a little Apache server on the side. Like any book, you will not find al the answers but if you are out to learn this book will not disappoint you.
