Title: SQL: The Complete Reference, Second Edition
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: James R Groff, Paul N. Weinberg
Rating: 5/5
I am intermediate with SQL and have to say that this book has examples for any and every command that you can think of. Now I'm not sure if everything is in there because it is such a huge book but I wouldn't doubt it, it explains basics to Advanced with good examples.
I think that everyone should have this as a reference if you want something that has most of what you might need when looking up SQL
Title: Professional Data Warehousing with SQL Server 7.0 and OLAP Services
Publisher: Peer Information Inc.
Authors: Sakhr Youness
Rating: 2/5
I know WROX books and until this one they were very good or excellent. This one is no help to anybody. Author touches a lot of subjects not giving you anything on any of them. Almost anything you can also find in Books OnLine (bad as they are).
If you need serious book, look for E. Thomsen titles.
Title: MCSE: SQL Server 2000 Design Study Guide (Exam 70-229)
Publisher: Sybex
Authors: Marc Israel, J. Steven Jones, Marc Israel, Steve Jones
Rating: 5/5
Not only does this book cover the topics necessary to pass 70-229, but it contains information that will help you become a solid DBA in the real world. The coverage on undocumented DBCC commands is extemely helpful in terms of helping you understand SQL Server 2000 internal architecture and, hence, optimization. This title is among my top 3 favorite Sybex books.
Title: The Practical SQL Handbook: Using Structured Query Language (3rd Edition)
Publisher: Pearson Education
Authors: Judith S. Bowman, Sandra L. Emerson, Marcy Darnovsky
Rating: 5/5
This was one of the best written INTRO books I have seen. I say INTRO, because it does not cover everything I wanted, but I don't mind because I also liked the fact that it wasn't 600+ pages. SQL is too dry to spend that much time reading about it. Just download an evaluation of SQL Server 7 and the CD the book comes with has a script to create the database. Just copy/paste the script into Query Analyzer and you're done(you may have to troubleshoot a little). Or you can enter it by hand which I found to be much more useful for me to learn SQL. Anyway, GOOD INTRO BOOK. BUY IT.
Title: Oracle PL/SQL Interactive Workbook (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR
Authors: Benjamin Rosenzweig, Elena Silvestrova
Rating: 1/5
I bought this in hoping to find a PL/SQL book that could give me a real life lab exercise. I gave up on this book. The examples would sometime refer to advanced topics not discussed. There were errors. The exercises did not appear to be kitchen tested before the book was published. I am still looking for a good PL/SQL book that has good interactive lab exercises, if you find one please let the rest of us know.
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 for Dummies
Publisher: For Dummies
Authors: Anthony T. Mann
Rating: 2/5
Let's just say this is not a very good dummies book. There are very very few "real world" examples of the topics presented. The technical accuracy is pretty decent, but this book will not enlighten any beginners to the world of SQL Server. Advanced topics are rarely explained in layman terms and the depth of coverage is, shall we say, not very deep at all! Stick to the SQL Server Online Books (which this book just seems to re-hash, albeit in much less detail) and you'll learn alot more about SQL Server.
Title: The Guru's Guide to Transact-SQL
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: Ken Henderson
Rating: 3/5
After reading the rave reviews, I bought this book and quickly found that it is written for already-seasoned T-SQL programmers only. Those of you who already understand SQL and RDBMS basic, but need to gain some initial skills with Programming SQL Server 2000 and T-SQL will get a lot out of "SQL Server 2000 Programming By Example" by Guerrero and Rojas, an excellent, although not completely sufficient prep for Microsoft's SQL Server Design exam. Those of you who are intermediate T-SQL types will get tons out of BoB Vieira's excellent "SQL Server 2000 Programming" which goes nicely beyond certification-level content into DTS, OLAP and other key areas. Why only three stars? The book does not clearly warn the purchaser of it's required skill level, er... except in it's name, of course.
Title: Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Kalen Delaney
Rating: 4/5
This book is a revamp of Inside Microsoft SQL Server 7.0. The new edition is not as good as the original: the index is more cluttered and hard to use, some important topics have been removed and some of the new text is vaporous. That said, this is still the SQL Server book to get first and foremost. There are a few useful new updates too (I still keep the 7.0 version at hand though). Dedicated SQL administrators will want to get additional books, but this is the place to start for everyone.

I have been working with SQL Server for the last five years and about two years ago when I was in a dilemma about transactions I purchased this book. It totally cleared all my concepts and I was able to not only resolve transaction problems that I was having but also become an expert within my firm. The book helped me gain a lot of respect with my fellow collegues. If you are looking to really become a SQL Server black belt and get a great understanding of what happens INSIDE then this is a highly recommended book.

If the SQL Svr 7 book didn't exist, this would be a pretty good book. As it is, though its to much like it. Basically if you have the 7 book, you don't need this one. As other people have pointed out the two are very, very similar. But the book is still a good read if you don't have the version 7 book, its just to bad that there isn't more about SQL Svr 2000 in this one (like xml for example).
