Title: Oracle PL/SQL 101
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Christopher Allen
Rating: 5/5
Lays a Great Foundation

This book takes away any questions about PL/SQL...I had taken a class where the instuctor left me thoroughly lost. After one night with this book, I was completely at ease. There are various exercises in each chapter, which enhance your understanding of what is being explained. The author gives precise short explanations which clearly delineate the principles you are expecting to master. The best way to learn is to use the examples with data of your own as opposed to "widgets". By replacing the data, and saving your scripts, you can review and it is always fresh in your mind. Great beginner book!

Title: Creating Database Web Applications with PHP and ASP (Internet Series)
Publisher: Delmar Thomson Learning
Authors: Jeanine Meyer
Rating: 5/5
VERY HELPFUL

Jeanine,Just wanted to let you know how helpful your book is. Before I thought, it was impractical to have two scripting languages and two databases. I said this because from my experience I started learning database from Access then learn Visual Basic Codes and Scripts. Originally, my field of profession is Financial Accounting. In the early 90's I learn Lotus then migrated to Excel spreadsheet programs. I was not satisfied for what Macros can do so I studied Access database. I was so amazed by it but there are things I know and hope will be easier and faster. I wanted to learn SQL knowing how powerful it is, but because how expensive commerialize DBMS softwares were it made me stick with Access. The internet period has arrived at that time, so I learned ASP with Visual Basic Scripting. I was not totally satisfied with it because VBScript is always tied up to a giant corporation and at the time I was learning HTML, XML &
JavaScript. This made me confuse, what direction am I going. I decided to continue what I learned so far, apply it then to whatever will make it easier. So, I studied ASP with JavaScript Langauge. Consequently, from learning and experience, I read about MySQL and PHP and studied it as well. So far your book is the best and most helpful, in showing how to connect to a server and for sure will SAVE me and my clients alot. Currently, I am a financial administrator and partly the intranet designer of a
University in San Francisco. My goal is to have my own server
company.Thank you again and more power to you.John

Title: Beginning SQL Server 2000 Programming
Publisher: Wrox Press
Authors: Robin Dewson
Rating: 5/5
Great beginners book!

Just moving across from Access to SQL Server and I found this a brilliant book. Starting from the installation, through creating a database onwards it covers every aspect. The best part is that the book covers the same area from every angle so I could choose which method from the choices SQL Server 2000 gives me, suits me best. I didnt know which book to buy on the shelves in the book store, but from just opening the book at random pages the author had a great style of writing.

Title: Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 24 Hours (3rd Edition)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ryan Stephens, Ron Plew
Rating: 1/5
...

I came to this book with a very basic working knowledge of SQL, hoping to round out my knowledge of more complex operations and get a better grasp of transactional operations. I came away with little more than I started with. The authors take such a broad approach, attempting to do the impossible - teach readers how to use ANSI-compliant SQL. Problem is, no RDBMS (Database platform) is truly ANSI-compliant. When it gets specific it's generally to show how MySQL does not do what Oracle does, yet for some strange reason they instruct the reader to use MySQL for exercises. Even funnier, something like 20% of the exercises cannot be done on MySQL, so they actually suggest that you get out a piece of paper and write them out! Why not just write a book called "Oracle SQL" and offer some comparisons with other implementations? The "see your implementation documentation for details" disclaimer occurs 2-3 times per chapter. So, why am I reading this again? Why not just read my RDBMS help files? In the same vein, the data provided to learn with is exemplary of "toy" code, with tables of 5-10 records each. Most chapters consist of run-downs of the various functions, sometimes with good examples, often without. The typos are rampant, with whole blocks of text sometimes being misplaced. Even the source data contains egregious errors. Obviously, this book was slammed out (in "24 hours" I bet), was not proofread, and forgotten. Third edition?!? Was the first edition just a bunch of garbled text??I could go on, but in summary, don't bother. Buy something else. Anything else. Most likely either a book aimed at a particular implementation (e.g. MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, PostgresSQL etc), or one of the many books aimed at giving a working knowledge of SQL for web development (e.g. PHP and MySQL Web Development, etc). Good luck.

Best PHP book ever

This is the best book I've seen so far for the beginner, and I definately wish I had it when I was started learning. Straight to the point is the best way to describe this book. If your new to programming, the sections on arrays, strings and program flow will give you a solid foundation on which to build your skills with. A must in every developers library!!!

Title: MCSE SQL Server 2000 Database Design Exam Cram (Exam: 70-229)
Publisher: Coriolis Group Books
Authors: Sean Chase, Richard McMahon
Rating: 2/5
not the best one ...

I passed the exam but only because I got rid of this book and studied from MSDN a week before. The book covers most of the topics as if they were in a high school curriculum. I'd say if you are preparing for the MCSE/MCSD/MCP exam then DO NOT go by this book. But is fairly ok if you'd want an introduction to SQL Server 2000 before digging deeper into another detailed exam material.

Title: SQL Server 7: A Beginner's Guide
Publisher: Osborne Publishing
Authors: Dusan Petkovic
Rating: 1/5
Your time is better spent elsewhere

This book is simply a regurgitation of SQL Server's Books OnLine, except filled with typos. You would be better off just reading BOL if you want the "here are the 3 ways to do this" style found here. There is no input from the author on why you should do things one way instead of another, advantages or disadvantages of programming or administration options, etc. I don't suggest this book. I do suggest "Professional SQL Server 7.0 Programming" by Rob Vieira, even for beginners. There you will find some common sense advise from an experienced programmer, along with the "how to".

Don't buy if you are new to SQL Server 2000

I find this book particularly hard to follow. It contains much theories and little useful examples. The book is dry and poorly explained. To benefit from this book, you need to have worked with SQL Server or somewhat familiar with the tools and terms. If you are new to SQL Server 2000, save your money and look for something better.
