Title: Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 Database Implementation Training Kit (Training Kit)
Publisher: Microsoft Press Rating: 5/5
I took the Microsoft Course and purchased the book and the new book by Lance Mortensen. I nearly passed. The problem is that the material required for the test is in many cases not covered in the books. The new Transender exam is available in beta form.
Title: SQL Server 2000 Web Application Developer's Guide
Publisher: Osborne/McGraw-Hill
Authors: Craig Utley
Rating: 4/5
The book is very readable and useful. My criticism is the treatment of SQL security issues. The audience that this book is aimed at is knowledgeable but not superhero. Chapters are titled things like "Introduction to . . . " and "Your first . . ." People reading books like this one about SQLServer are guaranteed to have problems with SQL security issues. A straight-forward section addressing getting us out of these problems is sorely missing.
Title: MCSE SQL 7 Database Design and Administration Practice Tests Exam Cram (Exam: 70-028, 70-079)
Publisher:
Authors: Geoffrey Alexander, Joseph, Jr. Alexander
Rating: 3/5
Agree with previous reviewer: lots of questions for low price. However, some questions used terms (like deadly embrace) for which I can find no reference in any other material (including BOL). After scoring my answers, I reviewed their expla- nation of why the answers are right/wrong. I frequently verified these answers using BOL and discovered that about 3 to 5 answers for each exam disagreed with BOL. Having looked at some of the braindump websites, I would expect this of those sources, but not from this kind of published book. Next I will use Transcender. If I have time before my DBA and D&I exams, I will go back and verify **all** answers.
Title: Google: The Missing Manual
Publisher: O'Reilly Rating: 5/5
Mostly when people think of Google, they think of a search engine that has become extremely popular and one that allows them to find topics they're searching for at a moment's notice. But Google is so much more, and this book shows exactly how much more. The goal of any search is to search effectively with as many relevant answers as possible to any query and that's what the book's first chapter discusses, from specific words and/or phrases to the famous "getting lucky." Chapter 2 builds on that with tricks for advanced searching, by refining your search, searching specific titles or text or even specific URL's. You can also search Google for images as well as text, just the thing if you're looking for specific clip art or a nice picture to send to a friend. You can also use Google to search for various net news articles, or even the Google directory which separates web sites into different categories, everything from Sports and Art to World Affairs and History and countless other topics. There's also a chapter about Google answers, which is a service you do have to pay for, but may be worth it if a question you have still remains unanswered after an exhaustive search. Want to go shopping? Then Froogle may be for you, it lets you do searches on various products and their prices. There's a lot of answers in this book to various questions about using Google and the many features the average Google user may not know about. This is a good book to have even if you only use Google rarely, but an absolute must to have if you're an avid Google user.
Title: PHP Essentials
Publisher: Muska & Lipman/Premier-Trade
Authors: Julie C. Meloni
Rating: 5/5
PHP is a very light-weight but powerful server side scripting language. Similar is the case with this book. Explained in very light-weight manner, but still covering almost all the stong features.Alas, I can only give this book a five star rating at Amazon site. If there had been 10 stars, I would have given it all 10.
Title: SQL Server 2000: The Complete Reference
Publisher: Osborne/McGraw-Hill
Authors: Jeffrey Shapiro
Rating: 1/5
The content of the book doesn't match its title. By no means it is "the complete reference" to SQL Server 2000. It merely touches SQL 2000 functions here and there. For Internet/Web functions, for example, it only gives a tiny portion to mention XML, totally ignoring SQL Server 2000's other web functions, such as ASP and ISAPI. If you are looking for a reference book on SQL server 2000, stay with Microsoft IT Professional books. The bottom line is: it is misleading to claim to be "the complete reference" of SQL server 2000 while the book merely touches some (not all) surface of SQL server 2000.
Title: Apache Jakarta-Tomcat
Publisher: Apress
Authors: James Goodwill
Rating: 5/5
Well it's a book that covers all the tricks behind Tomcat, now the understanding of the application server is much much more clear than with the documentation.
Title: Hitchhiker's Guide to Visual Basic & SQL Server: William R. Vaughn (Microsoft Programming Series)
Publisher: Microsoft Pr
Authors: William Vaughn
Rating: 4/5
This book was recommended to me by by a Microsoft Trainer. I bought the book, but didn't really use it for almost 6 months. I felt it was a little 'talky' and did not address specific issues I was interested in at the time. However, as I've progressed with SQL server, I've realized how good this book really is. It gives an excellent understanding of the underpinnings of SQL server and the different VB interfaces. It helped me through some difficult problems by giving me a better understanding of what was going on at the server level. You cannot rerally use this book as a reference tool. There is not much sample code. You need to read it cover to cover to get all of its benefits. I highly recommend this book.!
Title: Oracle PL/SQL Programming, Third Edition
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Steven Feuerstein
Rating: 1/5
I really thought I knew PL/SQL until I read this book.It contains so much great, hidden information. It is a great value at triple its price. If you do any serious Oracle PL/SQL coding, GET THIS BOOK!
Title: MCSE Database Design on SQL Server 7 Exam Cram (Exam: 70-029)
Publisher: Coriolis Group Books
Authors: Jeffrey Garbus, David Pacuzzi, Alvin Chang, David Pascuzzi
Rating: 4/5
This book is helpfull summary of key concepts needed for 70-029. It does not waste time describing Enterprise Manager, that is great! However there are too many typos and you will get frustrated if you do not buy a reference book because details are sometimes lacking. The questions themselves do not look like the real exam ones but they are good brain-shakers. By the way, can you change the FILL_FACTOR of a primary key index?
