Title: MCSE: SQL Server 7 Administration Study Guide
Publisher:
Authors: Lance Mortensen, Rick Sawtell
Rating: 5/5
I passed 70-028 using Sybex SQL Server 7 administration study guide with MOC & Books On Line. I think that the MOC was good for detailed in some areas. But it's not sufficently detailed for preparing exam... BOL was great for mastering SQL 7. But, you know, it's hard to find someting you want. So, I thought that Sybex Book was accurated and coverd a wide-range of topics. It's easy to read. Good coverd for a wide topics. Prepare it for Hard exam!!!
Title: Apache Server 2 Bible
Publisher: Wiley
Authors: Mohammed J. Kabir
Rating: 5/5
I am using this book to implement a Perl web application using mod_perl on a Linux box - the other book I am using is O'Reilly's "Writing Apache Modules". So far, I have found most everything I needed between those two books. It is very helpful to have a book dedicated to the Apache Server, nothing more and nothing less.If I would understand Regular Expressions better than I do, I actually would have found everything I needed - that's when I sent an email to the author, who answered me first in a meeting break and then again in his lunch break ... wow.One little thing: I almost would have bought this book in a bookstore before I actually bought it from Amazon. The reason I didn't back then was that it says "Covers Windows 95 and Windows NT Platforms" on the cover - it should read "Covers UNIX/Linux and Windows 95/NT"! The book covers a lot of UNIX!

Title: PHP and MySQL Web Development
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Luke Welling, Laura Thomson
Rating: 5/5
Yes, the book helped me with my first few contracts in PHP and MySQL, but what it didn't provide me with were good coding techniques. I've learned so much since from other books and developers, and looking back on this book and the code they provide as examples... well, I can't believe that people actually paid me for that early work.
------- what I wrote about it before
I owe my last 3 contracts to this book. It's that simple. I picked it up after setting up my BSD development platform and I was ready to go. If you're not a programmer, don't worry. The first 150 pgs are dedicated to you. It teaches you the basics of strings, variables, functions... everything. Even if you're a programming whiz, it's also good to have a refresher from time to time... hell, it corrected a few of my bad practices.
It walks you through the installation process of mysql and php on both *nix and windows systems in the appendix, and learning mysql from command line was simple after reading this book. For the more advanced people, you ever built your own shopping cart from scratch? Well, you will about 1/3 of the way through the book. It also provides insightful reading about security, best practices, etc. that are well written and necessary if you are to take what you learn in this book seriously.
I highly recommend it.
Title: MCDBA Administering SQL Server 2000 Study Guide (Exam 70-228)
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Joyjit Mukherjee
Rating: 1/5
I would have to say that for a book I haven't cracked open yet, other than to have installed the CD with test questions, my 2 month old could have done a better job is this is indicative of the quality of the text. If the quality of the book text mirrors the quality of the practice CD, you'll need to swing by the store and get some Huggies.Errors, errors, errors. Dead-wrong answers in the on-line tests AND 'check all that apply' when radio buttons (only one answer can be chosen) makes me believe that my studying the content of the book will hurt my chances on the exam. How in the world did this guy get a book published? I sent an email to the publisher, but have had no reply as of yet. Will write another review IF I get a response. I would like to believe that the CD content was developed by Perkovich's intern on their second day on the job. Let's hope so, as I begin to read and study...Good luck on this one.
Title: Professional SQL Server 2000 DTS (Data Transformation Services)
Publisher: Wrox
Authors: Mark Chaffin, Brian Knight, Todd Robinson
Rating: 5/5
This book has many positives with few negatives. The topics covered are diverse and extremely relevant. The book starts out with am overview of DTS and its wizard. It then covers the designer, the DTS COM object model, and even the interface required to build your own tasks to include in DTS. An unexpected and added benefit was its delineation between SQL 2000 and SQL 7 DTS functionality. This book can be reliably used as a reference for both environments. The only downside was the books length and the inclusion of extraneous material, such has how to load a data warehouse with DTS. However, as the chapters were well encapsulated, these areas could be skipped without missing core DTS information. It is still well worth the five stars.
Title: Oracle PL/SQL Interactive Workbook (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR
Authors: Benjamin Rosenzweig, Elena Silvestrova
Rating: 1/5
This book is awful. Elena, the author, mostly read from the textbook. Anyone can read from the textbook. Why buy this book if the author is just going to read from the text? My suggestions is to go to Oracle and buy their CBT. It is worth it.
Title: PHP and MySQL Web Development
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Luke Welling, Laura Thomson
Rating: 5/5
Potentially the most perfectly formed book in existence, this weighty tome makes all my other geek books shiver with fright. They've been outclassed, they know, their time has come, for the mighty "PHP and MySQL" has made its way onto my shelf. Every chapter is more riveting than the last, I mean, "Gone with the wind" has nothing on this beauty. And those diagrams! They should be framed and hung in the best galleries in the world. Obviously the authors demonstrate a combined devastating intellect which should enable them to conquer bold new frontiers. p.s. Hi Laura and Luke :-)

I've found this book an invaluable aid to learning PL/SQL. I recommend you buy this book in conjunction with George Koch's Oracle 8 The Complete Reference because Urman covers PL/SQL in more detail and Koch's book has a very good Alphabetical Reference but lacks detail in the PL/SQL stuff.
