I had been using SQL for years, and found this book taught me more than a few things. It explained a number of mysteries, and proved to be enjoyable reading as well. Its a must read for anyone that needs to work with databases.
Title: SQL Server 2000 Stored Procedure Programming
Publisher: Osborne/McGraw-Hill
Authors: Dejan Sunderic, Tom Woodhead
Rating: 1/5
I've been attempting off an on again for over a year to get a grasp on creating and using stored procedures. I've searched the Internet for information, bought another book published by SAMS, read the white papers from Microsoft, just about everything I could think of. Nothing would sink in...Then after sitting back and giving up for a few months, I tried another search of the Amazon books online and found "SQL Server 2000 Stored Procedure Programming". I can't believe the ease of learning this book gave me with its simple step by step, hands on instructions. It finally started to click by the time I was in Chapter 3, I finally had a grasp of how to create and use stored procedures with Microsoft's SQL Server.I've been programming since 1976 and never had such a problem getting over a learning curve but this book's easy to follow, detailed and illustrated instructions made it a snap. My thanks go to Dejan Sunderic and Tom Woodhead for creating a top notch book that I'm having a hard time putting down as I'm having such a good time with it.
Title: Core PHP Programming: Using PHP to Build Dynamic Web Sites (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Pearson Education
Authors: Leon Atkinson
Rating: 5/5
Part 1 of the book is best. I was already proficient in C, Perl, Java. So I was able to quickly skim through the book and get into production right away. There are, however, some unfortunate errors in the book -- The mysql database section, lists:$mysql_select_db(... instead of mysql_select_dbYou can see that it was rushed. I'd prefer it rushed, however, than just being put out now.Great work Leon!

Title: Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 Dba Survival Guide
Publisher: Sams Pub
Authors: Orryn Sledge, Mark Spenik
Rating: 5/5
No other book on the market even comes close with respect to the DBA specific aspects of SQL server. All the rest are a mix of developer/DBA material. If you just want to know how to administer SQL this is definately the book for you!
Title: Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Kalen Delaney
Rating: 1/5
This is too much like SQL Server 7. If it said SQL Server 7 on the cover or just SQL Server, I suppose that would be ok. But it says SQL Server 2000.I agree with the other reviews that say its boring. Its very, very boring - its a tough read. You can't just sit down with it - it will put you to sleep. Also there's no XML info. There should be lots of it. Its just a real disappointment.
Title: Oracle8 Pl/SQL Black Book (Black Book (Coriolis Group Books Paperback))
Publisher: Coriolis Group Books
Authors: Mark Gokman, Jonathn Ingram, Jonathan W. Ingram
Rating: 5/5
This book is a great guide to PL/SQL, especially for DBA's and non-programmers. The reference section is especially good, and I can quickly find PL/SQL snippets to assist me.
Title: Transact-SQL Programming
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Lee Gould, Andrew Zanevsky, Kevin Kline
Rating: 1/5
Since the book says it was published in 1999, I don't understand why it doesn't cover SQL Server 7.0 better. It should not have been published w/out decent 7.0 coverage. Worse, the cover claims it covers 7.0, but the only real 7.0 coverage is in a single appendix. This borders on false advertising. Had I known this when I first looked at it, I would not have bought it.
Title: Apache, MySQL, and PHP Weekend Crash Course (Weekend Crash Course)
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
Authors: Steven M. Schafer
Rating: 5/5
I really bought this book for the calendar project at the end of the book. But I was absolutely apalled at what the publisher claims to be "focused sessions". If you need to learn mySQL and PHP look at Anny Harris' "PHP/MySQL Programming for the absolute beginner." I am an ASP programmer looking to break away from the hold microsoft has over everyone. But you couldn't learn PHP with this book if your life depended on it. And if you need to learn Apache, I don't know what to suggest. But don't buy this book. The publisher would be doing the world a great service by either removing this book from the market or actually make the format of the book into something instructive.
Title: MCSE System Administration for Microsoft SQL Server 7
Publisher: Prentice Hall
Authors: Jeffry Byrne, Jeffrey Byrne
Rating: 1/5
Well, I just returned from taking the beta exam. I bought this book in spite of the bad reviews because it was the only one available. My mistake!I guess you can give Mr. Byrne and the publisher a little credit for trying to get something out early. But, in doing so, rather than putting together a solid effort, they published a huge number of stupid mistakes and outright misinformation. The beta had 113 questions. Perhaps 30 or so were addressed well in this book. Look elsewhere for better results - that should not be hard to do!
