Title: Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes, Third Edition
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ben Forta
Rating: 5/5
Ok, I would give it 4 1/2 if I could, but can't so I will round down. If you are learning SQL or are going to in a class room, this is a GREAT way to start, even before you start taking lessons. this book will break up learning into "10 minute" lessons, which the first few can be done thourghly in 5. (Possibly because I had already learned it but oh well). Anyway, if you go through every lesson seriously, you will walk away with a GOOD knowledge of SQL, take it from someone who uses SQL in the field.
Title: Apache Security
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Ivan Ristic
Rating: 4/5
I don't agree that this is detailed and comprehensive. Yes, it touches all the necessary ground, but it only touches, and left me quite confused at several points.
It's good - I don't want to imply otherwise. But the average web site owner is going to struggle with a lot of this and spend a lot of time Googling to understand it. That's inevitable: this would probably need to be thousands of pages if it really were comprehensive. But if you think this is going to teach you Apache security, well, it certainly will point you toward the right places but it doesn't stand alone.
Also: I was quite annoyed at the index. Several times I could not get back to some thing I knew I had read about and had to page-flip to find what I wanted.
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Bible with CD-ROM
Publisher: Wiley
Authors: Paul Nielsen
Rating: 5/5
When it comes to building databases, this book organizes chapters into an easy-to-follow logical sequence. Nielsen offers something for everyone in this book by taking you from modeling a logical database design, to implemtation, to performance tuning. He provides easy-to-follow examples all throughout the book. Personally, I found his "Best Practice" opinions and suggestions priceless!
Title: Professional SQL Server 2000 Programming
Publisher: Wrox
Authors: Robert Vieira
Rating: 5/5
I have several SQL reference books in my library, but this is the 1 that I use 9 times out of 10. Rob has a way of explaining things that makes it seem easier to understand. Couple that with good examples and you have a winning combination. It also doesn't hurt that the book conveys his sense of humor -- which under a tight deadline, seems to difuse frustration. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good reference. Get a basic understanding of SQL, then skip the beginning books for this one.
Title: MCSE Training Guide: SQL Server 6.5 Administration (Covers Exam #70-026)
Publisher: New Riders Pub
Authors: Brad McGehee, Chris Miller, Wayne Smith, Deanna Townsend, Stephen Wynkoop
Rating: 4/5
I used this book along with Technet(Backoffice resource kit) and the SQL books online to prepare for the exam, on which I scored an 881. I have a couple year's experience with the product, but not 'in-depth', so there were several topics where I needed a good tutorial. This book filled that need and is written directly to the exam 'objectives'; problem is, I don't think the MS exam was reflective of the stated 'objectives'. So there were several questions on the exam that this book didn't prep well for (like application development and SQL OLE, DMF, ODS, etc, and replication--the publishing subscriber model wasn't even mentioned). But reading the corresponding MS documentation with each topic (a LOT of reading!) covers most of the bases. The practice exams were mediocre. I recommend this book.
Title: PHP Bible, 2nd Edition
Publisher: Wiley
Authors: Tim Converse, Joyce Park
Rating: 5/5
It's a good book. I recommend it.
The pitfall is that almost all the codes concerning database don't have the corresponding SQL queries. Readers have no way to know the structure of the database unless totally understanding the whole program. Some errors also appear in some programs.
Title: Essential PHP Tools: Modules, Extensions, and Accelerators
Publisher: Apress
Authors: David Sklar
Rating: 5/5
If you are using PHP with your web applications you will want a copy of "Essential PHP Tools". Author David Sklar has gathered together tools to resolve some of the most common problems of PHP. If you want to do authentication you don't have to hand write the code, a free tool is available. Unfortunately many of the best free tools for PHP also have minimal documentation. David Sklar resolves this problem by providing excellent documentation for each of the tools mentioned in the book. Some of these include tools for accessing databases (using both the DB and ADODB methods), generating and processing forms, templating, XML parsing, sending mail, authentication, working with users and passwords, debugging, caching, and optimizing. The tools are easy to find and useful, the documentation excellent, and the writing style easy to follow. All this makes "Essential PHP Tools" a highly recommended book for anyone using PHP on their webserver.
Title: Microsoft Access Projects with Microsoft SQL Server
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Ralf Albrecht, Natascha Nicol, Dr. Natasha Nicol
Rating: 5/5
Dont waste your money. I got this today in the post. After a quick look when they install of all things SQL Server 7, I looked at the rest of the book. A new book which is available and written WHEN A2002 and SQL Server 2000 where available and this is the result. Save your money and download books online or buy SQL Access to SQL Server published by Apress. In one section that book has more useful information that this entire volume. MS Press seem to be throwing a book at everything lately and quality was bound to suffer. Pity it was an important area like ADPs that suffered. Me, I am returning this for a refund tomorrow. More useful information on MSDN.
Title: Php Developer's Dictionary
Publisher: Sams
Authors: R. Allen Wyke, Michael J. Walker, Robert M. Cox
Rating: 2/5
This book seems to be pretty much a rehash of the PHP manual complete with the same errors and omissions that the PHP manual has. As a desktop reference for PHP, it may be useful for the casual PHP user as it contains information on installation and configuration but for more serious programmers, stick with the online manual or see the 'PHP Functions Essential Reference' in print soon.
