Title: MCSE Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Administration Readiness Review Exam 70-228 (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Irfan Chaudhry, Dean Bartholomew
Rating: 3/5
If you are currently a Database Administrator or Analyst, this book is good at helping you prepare for the exam. However, if you are expecting an indepth resource on the subject you will be disappointed. The only downfall to these types of books is the fact that they give you enough examples to pass the test but not enough real world experience. This book gives you the question, you try to answer and then it gives you Microsoft's correct answer (not necessarily real world). Overall a good book and cd to prepare for the test (rated 3 1/2 stars but not available as a rating). Most likely you will need additional resources to help you prepare.
Title: The Guru's Guide to SQL Server Stored Procedures, XML, and HTML (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: Ken Henderson
Rating: 5/5
I never thought I'd say this but this book is even better than the first Gurus Guide book! Henderson cuts loose and just writes. It feels like you've got the guru sitting right next to as you read. As with his first book, Henderson runs a tight ship with this one. There's no fluff or other filler material. Instead, you just get the goods, and you get them by the boatload. My fav things about this one are:* Extended Proc coverage. I've always wondered how to build these. The coverage in this book is absolutely excellent. It could be a book unto itself.* XML coverage. I've never seen a better cut-to-the-chase introduction to XML and the XML features in SQL Server. It's a wonderful, hands-on tutorial written by a master.* Emphasis on treating transact-sql as a real language. Henderson stresses this over and over and he's right. This book is every bit as good as the high-end programming books that feature languages like C++ and Java.* Essays on software engineering. These are some of the best technical writing I've ever read. I don't think you could spend your money on a better SQL Server book. DjF
Title: Beginning PHP 5 and MySQL: From Novice to Professional
Publisher: Apress
Authors: W. J. Gilmore
Rating: 5/5
I thought this book was over all very helpfull. I have a degree in CS and speaking from a person with a lot of programming experience it was very easy to read and find help on the topics i needed too. I like how the author explains a lot of the programming style, principals and general good coding technique as well as the PHP synax, fuctions and what they do. If you have a bit of experiece this book is a good quick read. If your new to the field there's a lot to take in and you won't cover the entire book in a week but it's a good thing that all the information is there.
Title: Core PHP Programming: Using PHP to Build Dynamic Web Sites (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Pearson Education
Authors: Leon Atkinson
Rating: 5/5
Oh wait...maybe it was just me. This is a great book for anyone wanting to learn PHP, or who doesnt feel like scrolling through that boring online manual. The included CD with Apache and Xitami (and examples) is very nice.
This is the kind of book that makes you want to buy more books, and then put them on your shelf and tell people you read all of them! I was so inspired that I took the time to teach my pet monkey, Mojo, to speak rastafarian!
GREAT JOB, LEON!
Title: The Practical SQL Handbook: Using Structured Query Language (3rd Edition)
Publisher: Pearson Education
Authors: Judith S. Bowman, Sandra L. Emerson, Marcy Darnovsky
Rating: 2/5
The book is well written, unfortunately nothing is more annoying than not having the examples work. I went to the publishers site and there were no updates or corrections. What good is the book if the examples don't work? Shame on the author and publisher for not correcting their mistakes or including a correctly working version of sql anywhere.
Title: Professional SQL Server 2000 DTS (Data Transformation Services)
Publisher: Wrox
Authors: Mark Chaffin, Brian Knight, Todd Robinson
Rating: 2/5
I am new to DTS and VB. This book was a big help in the early chapters. It got me using the basic DTS features. Now I'm up to page 308 and have just spent 1-1/2 hours keying in a VB example. It doesn't work. I went over the code; I've keyed it in as it is shown and it still doesn't work. I do not have the expertise to troubleshoot it. I'm beginning to have my doubts about the next 800 pages. Sorry, guys. Before you publish you should try this stuff out on real world users.

Title: Programming PHP
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Rasmus Lerdorf, Kevin Tatroe
Rating: 2/5
It sure tries to teach you something but cannot achieve...
As everyone mentioned before, it has countless errors and typos. But there is more than that. Book is out of focus. Examples makes no sense and not related to each other, which is very confusing.
A piece of code here and other piece is there. Every example is coming out of nowhere. It doesn't have a project. So everytime different variables, situations. Like, in one example it uses Flintstones character names ($name=Fred, $name2 = fred etc.). Next example is subjects of a class (math, science, history, english etc.), on other one it uses very random strings like ("I like paris in november", "the key is in my pants")
If you want to learn PHP, stick with "PHP and MySQL Web Development, Second Edition" By Luke Welling, Laura Thompson.
Title: PHP and MySQL Web Development
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Luke Welling, Laura Thomson
Rating: 5/5
Being a productive web developer, I am constantly buying new books and looking through information online to better myself and make my online applications better. This is the first book that I have run across which reads easily and doesn't bore you to death. It is VERY well written and covers information easily and with great examples to help you understand something when you need it. That was the greatest thing - EVERY time that you get to a point where you are about to scratch your head and think, "huh?!", you are given a more detailed explanation, graph, diagram, image, etc. The authors and the publisher did a great job with this book and I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone thinking about using PHP 4 and MySQL for web development. I cannot say enough good things about it.
