Title: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Database Administrator's Guidebook
Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR
Authors: Carl H. Speshock
Rating: 5/5
This is a very informative book that I consult with on a daily basis. The book exceeded my expectations! Before it came out, I could not find a book that completely defined the SQL Server DBA role, many just discussed the technology. This book goes over the SQL Server technology very well and contains extra chapters that discuss secondary, and important, responsibilites that a SQL Server DBA must perform with profiency. The book is written with much level of detail to assist me in finding a solution. The Designing a Database server chapter was extremely helpful for me to get my point across to the System Admins on what a database server needs to be a productive system by covering hardware considerations such as RAID controllers, file system, drive storage, memory and more. The code samples in the book and the extra samples on the CD are excellent and are very helpful. The included CDROM is exceptional and definitely one of a kind. Many included CDROMs in technical books are useless. This book has a very productive and effective CDROM. It was definitely written by a DBA who works in the field and nows what he needs to have around for reference. The documents on the CDROM are effective templates to create DBA support documents. WOW!!!!
Title: Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft SQL Server 7 in 21 Days
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Richard Waymire, Rick Sawtell
Rating: 5/5
One thing that isn't mentioned on this page is that Richard Waymire (one of the authors) is a Program Manager on the SQL team at Microsoft. He definitely knows what he's talking about.
Title: Php Fast & Easy Web Development (Fast & Easy Web Development)
Publisher: Premier Press
Authors: Julie C. Meloni
Rating: 5/5
This book is great, I opened it up and already knew what was going on! Similar books, you open and you are overwhelmed by confusing scripts and procedures! In this one, it takes you step-by-step threw the basics onto the advance!
Title: The Guru's Guide to SQL Server Architecture and Internals
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: Ken Henderson
Rating: 5/5
If you push SQL Server hard enough, fast enough, and to a large enough scale, you *will* have questions. This book has those answers. I really wish I had it at the start of my project, but then I suppose I wouldn't have been able to appreciate the detail to which this book delves.
It does start out with a good bit of Windows internals before getting to SQL Server internals, but only as needed to provide a solid foundation. Great tips and tools for doing your own SQL Server spelunking are supplied as well.
For large scale fine tuning, this book is a must have.
Title: PHP and MySQL Web Development
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Luke Welling, Laura Thomson
Rating: 5/5
I am new to the world of PHP and MYSQL web applications development. I have to say that this book provides the necessary foundation to allow anyone to build a transaction worthy web site. I was very pleased with both the quality of the writing as well as the insightful examples. Will be on my software development bookshelf for quite some time.
Title: MCDBA SQL Server 2000 All-in-One Exam Guide (Book/CD Set)
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Companies
Authors: Dave Perkovich
Rating: 1/5
This book lacks so much crucial information needed to pass the exam. I read the first half which covered 228 and then grabbed the readiness review and was shocked at how little information the All-in-One book covered. I'm not even going to bother reading the second half for 229, and am looking for another title before attempting the 228 exam.
Title: Oracle PL/SQL Programming, Third Edition
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Steven Feuerstein
Rating: 5/5
1.this book doesn't even list triggers in the table of contents, which means that triggers were not included in that book at all!! 2.i dont know why, but the examples in the book were so different in every page and every chapter. it was really hard to know what the examples were all about. 3.table contents and actual contents do not match sometimes. the author mixes oracle8 features with oracle 7 features while explaining about oracle7 features, which only gave me confusions. 4.the only thing that attracted me was the tips that helped me pretty much.. In conclusion, if you are a beginner to pl/sql, please do not buy this book.
Title: MCSE Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Database Design and Implementation: Readiness Review Exam 70-229 (Pro-Certification)
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Sharon Bjeletich, Eddy Hahn
Rating: 3/5
If you are currently a Database Administrator or Analyst, this book is good at helping you prepare for the exam. However, if you are expecting an indepth resource on the subject you will be disappointed. The only downfall to these types of books is the fact they give you enough examples to pass the test but not enough real world experience. This book gives you the question, you try to answer and then it gives you Microsoft's correct answer (not necessarily real world). The book does not go into detail regarding its answers. Overall a good book and cd to prepare for the test (rated 3 1/2 stars but not available as a rating). Most likely you will need additional resources to help you prepare.
Title: Advanced Transact-SQL for SQL Server 2000
Publisher: Apress
Authors: Itzik Ben-Gan, Tom Moreau
Rating: 1/5
The book is a haphazard collection of bad advise and poorly written code. Obviously, neither of these guys has actually ever been a production level DBA. The book reads like a newsgroup message -- very amateurish and not advanced in the slightest.
Title: How to Use Google : The 30 Most Important Tips, Hacks and Tricks
Publisher:
Authors: Tod Sacerdoti
Rating: 4/5
Worth the money to obtain a sense of competence with this all powerful, by all accounts, search engine. There is some slight digression and loss of focus on page 10. Nonetheless, it is nice to be rid of ignorance and its corollary, helplessness, quickly and cheaply.
