Title: Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 Database Implementation Training Kit (Training Kit)
Publisher: Microsoft Press Rating: 5/5
Althought this book is not as comprehensive as SQL Book Online, it packs quite a punch to a 1 1/2 inch book. I passed SQL 7.0 Admin with help of this book and I highly recommend it.
Title: Php Fast & Easy Web Development (Fast & Easy Web Development)
Publisher: Premier Press
Authors: Julie C. Meloni
Rating: 4/5
PHP Fast and Easy Web Development is filled with examples which demonstrate how to use PHP effectively. With the information in this book I was able to use PHP and MySQL to set up a database for my website. This database will make my business competitive in my market. The only weakness in this book is the set up chapters. The book assumes everything works and moves on. Unfortunately, my system didn't work and after reviewing both the PHP aand MySQL sites I couldn't get it to work. I abandoned by PC, went to my MAC, coded the script, then uploaded it to my website (my host server has PHP and MySQL support). This made troubleshooting very cumbersome, but as I said, I was able to get the site up and running with little inconvience. This is an excellent reference for beginning PHP web development.
Title: Transact-SQL Programming
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Lee Gould, Andrew Zanevsky, Kevin Kline
Rating: 1/5
Anyone can copy information from other sources and put it into a book. It takes someone who really knows his or her stuff to write a book that is invaluable to the SQL programmer. I would definitely not recommend this book for the database professional.
Title: Ocp: Oracle8I Dba SQL and Pl/SQL Study Guide : Exam 1Z0-001 (OCP Study Guide)
Publisher: Sybex Inc
Authors: Chip Dawes, Biju Thomas
Rating: 3/5
This book should have been titled Oracle8i SQL Exam Guide. All author covers is simple select statements, joins, pre-defined sql functions, some basic tuning concepts with poor examples. As a matter of fact author covers pl/sql in less than 50 pages..... Not a good buy for intermediate/experts or someone planning on taking OCP DBA pl/sql Exam. Starter's might find this book useful. I recommend Oracle8 DBA certification exam guide.
Title: Mastering PHP 4.1 with CDROM
Publisher: Sybex
Authors: Jeremy Allen, Charles Hornberger
Rating: 1/5
This is the worst PHP book i have seen. This is my 3rd. I bought this book expecting advanced topics like email and pdf and gd but this book really dissapointed me. We can call it a extended copy of the php manual. Without any practical applications, this book keeps on telling different functions with little code snippets like in the php manual. the book fills in the space by lengthy texts. It really makes an easy to learn language like PHP much more difficult. If this book had a title somethin like "PHP Reference Guide", then i wud have given this book 4 stars but since it misleads the poor beginners by saying "if u r a beginner, this book starts from basics" which is not correct in any case. There are plenty of books for beginners and intermediates. A very good book recently released is (by Julie Meloni) PHP Essentials 2nd Edition so get it as its the best books for beginners you will ever find.I just kept wasting my time in this long manual. i dont know how the other readers give it so good rating?
Title: Oracle SQL Interactive Workbook (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR
Authors: Alice Rischert
Rating: 4/5
The Lab exercises help to build expertise in Oracle SQL, and the examples given are clear, concise and relevant. Most of all, many of the exercises are easily applied in a production environment leading to gains in job productivity almost immediately! This is a great book for the SQL beginner, and it helps to quickly build both the tools and the confidence to be productive in the Oracle database environment. The only thing that keeps me from giving this book a 5 star rating were minor editing mistakes on some of the examples of both the book and the companion web site. Overall Excellent!MVB
Title: Microsoft(r) SQL Server(tm) 2000 Analysis Services Step by Step
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: OLAP Train, Reed Jacobson
Rating: 4/5
I recommend this book because the author distinguishes multidimensional concepts and the OLAP tool.
Gab.
Title: Php Fast & Easy Web Development (Fast & Easy Web Development)
Publisher: Premier Press
Authors: Julie C. Meloni
Rating: 3/5
If you have just a little of experience in programming do NOT buy this book. More than 100 pages are related with variables / if / while / functions [...] and all the well known things in every language. If you're just a webmaster that has never programmed and with almost nothing of unix experience; this book is ok for you. If you have a little expierence with PHP (ie. at least have read the basic chapters of the php basic docs) this is not a good book for you.
I gave it 3 starts because of the database info and examples. Those are very good. I do insist: if you are REALLY new to php and programming and don't want to read the basic docs, buy it, if not, change your mind about buying it.
Title: Sybase SQL Server 11 Unleashed
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ray Rankins, Jeff Garbus, David Solomon, Bennett W. McEwan
Rating: 5/5
If you buy only one book covering Sybase, this should be it. This book covers everything from security to tuning to backup and recovery. In my department, we refer to this book as "The Bible". I would like to have seen some coverage of Replication Server, but hey, I guess you can't have everything. I can't wait for the next edition covering 11.5 and 11.9. Keep up the good work guys!
Title: Designing SQL Server 2000 Databases for .Net Enter
Publisher: Syngress
Authors: Travis Laird, Robert Patton, Jennifer Ogle
Rating: 5/5
This book is detailed and well written. I have a lot of SQL books, and I found this one to be an excellent source of information. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in building databases with SQL Server 2000.
