Title: SQL from the Ground Up
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Companies
Authors: Mary Pyefinch
Rating: 5/5
I do not agree with the negative reviews posted about this book. As a professional developer I find this book to be extremely helpful. It is far from perfect (what computer book is this days?) but it is a valuable asset for me and the other members of my programming team. This book is so popular that we have multiple copies making the rounds around the office!
Title: The Microsoft(r) SQL Server Survival Guide
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
Authors: Jim Panttaja, Mary Panttaja, Bruce Prendergast
Rating: 2/5
This book has lots of helpful information that is not otherwise covered in the SQL Server manuals or online documentation. There are plenty of facts and tidbits regarding how to configure SQL Server and use the RDBMS as an application platform, as well as info on how the various configuration parameters play off one another. The section on replication is pretty sparse, though, and doesn't quite jibe with the product itself, since SQLServer's replication is really hard to keep up and running. All in all, found the book to be pure gold, with a wealth of information. This is not a substitute for the manuals though, some experience is assumed. Not a books for novices, not is it a substitute for RTFM. Rather, a complement to the manuals.
Title: Advanced Transact-SQL for SQL Server 2000
Publisher: Apress
Authors: Itzik Ben-Gan, Tom Moreau
Rating: 2/5
The book is heavily influenced by the Books Online. You almost come away from it feeling that the BOL should get a co-author credit. It's far from Advanced if Advanced is defined by that which goes beyond the BOL. I can't think of any part of the book that stands out as really beyond the BOL. There's the nigh useless deviation into complex math in T-SQL (why not try some graphics routines while you're at it <g>), but there's nothing that says, "Hey, look at me - I'll tell you something you could never learn from the BOL." The book was really disappointing.

Title: Core PHP Programming: Using PHP to Build Dynamic Web Sites (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Pearson Education
Authors: Leon Atkinson
Rating: 1/5
The index in this book is appalling. The index is 95% function listings. How do I do search and replace on strings? If I don't know the name of the function that does it (the very reason I checked the book), then I'm out of luck. Also amusing is the egregious cut'n'paste error on the page explaining the CD-ROM, where they refer to the licensing for the Core Java Web Server CD-ROM. Ooops!
Title: Using Microsoft SQL Server 6.5

Title: Lan Times Guide to SQL
Publisher: Mcgraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: James R. Groff, Paul N. Weinberg
Rating: 5/5
This book is the best! It doesn't tie itself to any single SQL-based product. Instead, it guides you through the actual SQL standard with a few notes on deviations by specific products. With this book, I set up a freeware/generic SQL server and had a working database within an hour. Aside from this book, I have no database experience...just programming and systems experience. I found it a great resource for setting up tables and queries, including under specific products such as "Access97" and other (server-based) products.
Title: McSe: SQL Server 7 Database Design (The Training Guide Series)
Publisher: New Riders Publishing
Authors: David Besch, Sean Baird, Chris Miller, Denis Darveau, Wayne Smith, Deanna Townsend
Rating: 3/5
This book touches on all the 70-29 guideline requirements in a very organized fashion. The layout of the book was excellent, including objective explanations, section outlines, study strategies, fast facts, and helpful exam taking tips. Unfortunately, not all topics were covered in the depth really required to pass 70-29 (with exception of the 'Database Design' section, which was great). I found the training guide CD that accompanied this book to be an essential resource. Although the questions are not quite as difficult as the ones you'll encounter on 70-29, you will certainly become more comfortable with the testing interface and generally more aware of the scope of each testing section. You can select from exam simulations, study cards, and flash cards to help tailor to your own personal study needs. As others have already mentioned, 70-29 cannot be passed by studying a single material. This book does cover alot of the material, but should not be considered your prime study material. I would recommend the MicrosoftPress "SQL Server 7.0 Database Implementation Training Kit" to obtain your balk of 70-29 knowledge. Researching SQL 7.0 white papers is helpful as well.
Title: Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Kalen Delaney
Rating: 1/5
As a relative newcomer to the Microsoft SQL Server world, I have been very impressed with this introduction. I cannot comment on whether or not this SQL Server 2000 edition adds enough to the SQL Server 7.0 version to justify purchasing it if you already own the older edition, as I have never seen the earlier one. I found Delaney's discourse easy to follow, thorough, well-organized, and altogether the best introduction I have found. By all means, supplement this book with more specialized works on Transact SQL or DTS, but start here. The CD-ROM contains a 90-day evaluation version of SQL Server 2000, so with this book you can be up and running the software as you learn from the text. Definitely a best buy.
