Title: Beginning SQL Server 2000 Programming
Publisher: Wrox Press
Authors: Robin Dewson
Rating: 5/5
I went through three books (Learning SQL Server in 21 Days, SQL Server Programming by Microsoft, SQL Server 2000 for Visual Basic Developers) before I got to this one. This book beats all those others hands down. This is definitely the best book to get on learning SQL Server for beginners. It touches on all the areas you need to know to become proficient in managing your databases. I highly recommend it.
Title: SQL Server 2000: The Complete Reference
Publisher: Osborne/McGraw-Hill
Authors: Jeffrey Shapiro
Rating: 2/5
This is a great book. Information is organized and flows very well. With an MCP in Data Warehousing, this book provided me a really good view of "SQL Server Land". Others have been critical about the depth of content, but the author makes it very clear that some topics are too big for this type of book, with over 900 pages- it's provides plenty. In addition, the author interjects humor that makes reading more pleasurable. This is the best SQL Server book I have read yet!
Title: Essential PHP for Web Professionals
Publisher: Pearson Education
Authors: Christopher Cosentino
Rating: 4/5
The book is for those who know NOTHING about PHP!. They just need to know simple thing about HTML (just understand the code!), or it's for those who need QUICK reveiw on PHP.The author's language is very simple and to the point. He will teach you from installing PHP (and Apatche server) in your pc till integrating PHP with Mysql database. After you finish chapter 2, you will know how dynamic pages work and you can do very simple dynamic page. The chapter about database is perfect (now i understand and know how to make databases on my server!!)The author is explaining all lines of each script in the book, which is good way of understanding how a script works! After you finish the book, you will understand PHP scripting (you won't know everything about PHP) so you can start developing your self by doing more scripts. This is the only book i found about PHP, so can't compare it.but it is worth it!!
Title: Mastering Oracle SQL and SQL*Plus
Publisher: Apress
Authors: Lex de Haan
Rating: 5/5
This is an ideal introduction to Oracle SQL. I wish I had it when I was starting out. It's a combination reference and walkthrough that covers the fundamentals and some advanced techniques. The language is shown with graphs to show the syntax variations and the use of the operations is described in great detail. The text is a bit dry, but you can't fault it too much for that. An excellent book for those looking for an introduction to Oracle SQL, and probably useful for people with a mid level of experience as well.
Title: Apache Jakarta-Tomcat
Publisher: Apress
Authors: James Goodwill
Rating: 5/5
I was very disappointed when I cracked open the book today to find that much of book is focused on things like writing servlets and jsp based pages, rather than administration of Jakarta-Tomcat. If I wanted a Servlet writing book, I would ref my O'Reilly Java Servlet Programming book. The main reason I purchased this book was because I wanted to be certain that my Apache driven Solaris box, responsible for virtual hosting several sites, was configured correctly to maintain several instances of the JVM for each customer. Chapter 9 Integrating the Apache HTTP Server is just plain funny. If you delete the "What is Apache" section along with the pictures, weak example and summary, the chapter is only a few paragraphs long! Zero help!If you enjoy books that are essentially general overviews and contain remotely related content that can be better handled by other dedicated books, then this book is for you!I just purchased "Professional Apache" by Peter Wainwright and was very impressed with the level of detail given by Peter. Buy it if you want REAL information regarding the configuration and management of Apache. I am still hunting for one of similar caliber for Jakarta-Tomcat!
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Brian Larson
Rating: 2/5
This is the perfect book for your first day with SQL Reporting Services. The patient, step-by-step descriptions of setup and other processes are great -- as long as you're a new user. Once that period ends, though, you'll probably find, as I did, that the book suffers from two big problems. First, it's too basic - everything, even the advanced techniques, are described in that same step-by-step manner, which by now will seem very cumbersome. (Lest you think I'm exaggerating: in chapter 8, "Beyond Wow-Advanced Reporting", the user is still being told, in a separate, numbered instruction, to click OK after completing a series of steps.) Second, it's been layed out such that any attempt to read it as a reference -- that is, breaking out of the linear narrative of the step-by-step instructions and skimming through it looking for the one paragraph that describes how to do what you want to do -- is hampered by the needle-in-haystack problem of finding meaningful content amid all the instructions. Most tech books will indent example code so that it's easy to skip over; here, explanation, property lists and those darned steps are all just presented inside very large boxes. There is some font differentiation for SQL code, and there's tabular presentation of properties and values for you to assign, but the rest of the content is insufficiently differentiated for the book to be useful as a reference.
Because of these flaws, this book is not suitable as your only Reporting Services book. It might make a fine first book if your budget allows getting another, better one once you've progressed past the first couple chapters.
Title: Beginning PHP 5 and MySQL E-Commerce: From Novice to Professional
Publisher: Apress
Authors: Cristian Darie, Mihai Bucica
Rating: 5/5
This book has helped me immensely with real-life-like code examples and all that it takes to bringing an e-commerce site up and running. Lots of coding with brisk explanations. Starts with laying out the site: Presentation tier, Business tier, Data tier. Templating with Smarty, PEAR, Caching, Paypal, Shopping Basket, Orders, Order Pipeline, Payment Gateways, Credit-card Transactions, Web Services, Security, SSL, and what not? I wish the 2nd Chapter had a little bit more of explanation for a stronger foundation. I almost lost the chain of thought while reading this chapter and had to re-read it to grasp the techniques used. Other than that and out and out, the book is simply amazing and straight to the point!!

Title: SQL Server 2000 Stored Procedure & XML Programming, Second Edition
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Dejan Sunderic
Rating: 5/5
This book is the proverbial bomb! The cover is superb and the binding job is excellent. It is filled with many pages with much writing that covers topics. Best of all, the pages have numbers, which means that you can keep track of what section you were reading. Great fonts too.
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 DBA Survival Guide, Second Edition
Publisher: Sams

Title: PHP and MySQL Web Development
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Luke Welling, Laura Thomson
Rating: 5/5
This book has been a life saver. Although its a big book, it doesn't contain fluff like some its size. With a variety of sample code to use as a base you will be up and running your site in no time. The index is complete, too.
