Title: MCSE Test Success: SQL Server 7 Administration
Publisher: Sybex Inc
Authors: Michael Lee, Rick Sawtell
Rating: 5/5
I bought this book to help me pass SQL Server Admin exam - it worked. I just passed the exam. I also used the books online when I needed more detailed information. I would recommend this book. I would also recommend reading the book several times and supplementing the book with the books on line.
Title: Professional SQL Server 2000 XML
Publisher: Wrox Press
Authors: Paul J. Burke, Sam Ferguson, Denise Gosnell, Paul Morris, Karli Watson, Darshan Singh, Brian Smith, Carvin Wilson, Warren Wiltsie, Jan Narkiewicz, J Michael Palermo, John Reid
Rating: 5/5
I looked at two other SQL Server 2000 XML books, but found this one to be the best - covering almost everything on SQL Server 2000 XML. Very well written, nice examples help understand the technology better. The chapter on Updategrams is very useful. I wanted to learn updategrams and this chapter covers it nicely to get started using them in production.
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Administrator's Companion (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Marcilina Garcia, Jamie Reding, Edward Whalen, Steve Adrien DeLuca
Rating: 3/5
This is really a good beginner's book. Anyone who doesn't have experience in SQL Server can pick up this book as a good walk through. It does have some good coverage on the rich features such as clustering, DTS, and replication. However, it only shows you how to set it up. There's really very little talk about how to optimize these services or what problems are common as well as their solutions. If you're new to SQL Server and want to learn the breadth of features, this is a good book for you. It's easy to follow, since it's a picture book that takes you screen by screen. If you're a somewhat experienced or a veteran in SQL Server, you'll be disappointed. There's really very little to learn in the areas of architecture, design, disaster recovery, optimization, and troubleshooting.I believe to be a strong DBA, you'd need to know the very intricate operations within SQL Server (which is why I like Inside SQL Server 2000, even though it's not written as a DBA book) and know how to use Knowledge Base (which is what will really get you out of hot water).
Title: Advanced Transact-SQL for SQL Server 2000
Publisher: Apress
Authors: Itzik Ben-Gan, Tom Moreau
Rating: 4/5
Folks really trashed this book, and I just don't see it. Sure there are a few typos, and yes, much is not really "Advanced" but there is enough in there to make it a very worthwhile read. In addition, it would be nice to have a section that specifically covers SQL 7/2000 issues, but they are in there if you keep looking.
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 7 DBA Survival Guide
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Orryn Sledge
Rating: 1/5
A comprehensive guide to all aspects of SQL server which is clearly written in an accessible style. This book has helped me transfer my existing DBA skills in Informix/Ingres to SQL server. I liked the worked examples which help greatly in understanding key features such as backup and restore. One niggle is that the section covering master databse recovery omits the fact that the database must be in single user mode (sqlservr.exe -m). I can also recommend:- Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 Administrator's Pocket Consultant - Microsoft Press The Guru's Guide to Transact SQL - Henderson
Title: Php 4 Bible (Bible (Wiley))
Publisher: Hungry Minds
Authors: Tim Converse, Joyce Park
Rating: 4/5
As big, extensive and detailed as this book may be, it only develops the strict necessary notions about the PHP language to allow for working on a professional basis. The "caching" topics, always important as a technique for enhancing site performances, might be more extensively developped and the book would gain in going a little deeper into templates buiders, like "Smarty" which it mentions, anyway. Thanks to the authors, I could in just one book, written with the genius of pedagogy that pertains to american authors, get all the necessary notions to understand complex structures involving Apache, Smarty, MySql and Php. Good Job !
Title: Core PHP Programming: Using PHP to Build Dynamic Web Sites (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Pearson Education
Authors: Leon Atkinson
Rating: 4/5
I felt that this book was basically a good way to get going in decent PHP programming. The author assumes that you know a fair bit more about programming than he lets on, so it's good to have a bit of experience (in C would be best). Overall a good read, and the reference section for every php function is very helful to have (better than the online manual).a good buy.
Title: SQL Server 2000 Programming by Example
Publisher: Que
Authors: Carlos Rojas, Fernando Guerrero
Rating: 2/5
You know one of those reference books you buy but no matter how often you look at it it never has the answer to your questions? Yes? Well this book is one of those. As a professional software developer I never had much use for Que books - thick paper, too much white space, and big fonts. This book is no exception. I made the mistake of buying it on the strength of the reviews at Amazon but it lives up to the Que tradition of being a book full of basic information, most of which is available in the SQL server docs. Sure it has lots of examples but little that is very enlightening. I didn't get the impression here that this was a basic book but it is. It is going to be a disappointment to you if you, like me, already know SQL/DBMS programming but from another database product. If I was starting out then maybe I'd find it of use, but a one-stop answer to all you SQL Server problems it most definitely is not. If I ever find it useful I will come straight back here and change this review.

If you are serious enough about SQL Server to want to learn from two of our industry's masters then this is money well spent. If you have attended any SQL conferences, then you've probably heard these guys and respect their opinion. This is not an A to Z comprehensive course; this is a collection of interesting and advanced ideas that will help you think outside your box and improve the way you code. I heartily endorse this book.

Title: PHP Functions Essential Reference
Publisher: Pearson Education
Authors: Zak Greant, Graeme Merrall, Torben Wilson, Brett Michlitsch
Rating: 4/5
While no function reference can top the ease of use and simplicity of php.net/$function_name, some manage to hold their own. This isn't just another regurgitation of the downloadable help system, this book actually manages to give you usable examples along with function explanations you can wrap your head around. This is not a book for those just beginning PHP, and I pity anyone who write an application using only this book. You better have some preliminary knowledge of PHP before picking up this book, but beyond that it's probably one of the best reference books available, and small too!
