Title: Web Database Applications with PHP & MySQL, 2nd Edition
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Hugh E. Williams
Rating: 5/5
This is a superb resource for anyone who wants to understand the development process for web database applications. When I started I knew a little about PHP and almost nothing about MySQL. I knew no other scripting or programming languages. By the time I had worked through the first 10 chapters, I had a solid grasp of the fundamentals and was able to apply them to other projects. The book has a very purposeful style: the authors manage to explain challenging topics concisely and yet thoroughly. I found it accessible, and I enjoyed working through the sample winestore application. Note: the book has a comprehensive website where the authors have provided up-to-date code for the latest version of PHP. This book is full of practical, real-world examples, and I recommend it strongly.
Title: MCDBA SQL Server 7 Test Yourself Practice Exams (Exams 70-028 & 70-029)
Publisher: Osborne Publishing Rating: 2/5
I brought the book for my 028 and 029 examination. I found the book full of typo and spelling mistake. Sometimes I doubt the correctness of the answer. The practice questions are stragiht forward wherars the questions in the exam are much more complicated. It test your background knowledge but not good enough for the examination.
Title: Microsoft(r) SQL Server(tm) 2000 Analysis Services Step by Step
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: OLAP Train, Reed Jacobson
Rating: 4/5
This is a good book that will help you get started on Microsoft's SQL Server Analysis Services.
You'll get to learn how to build a Cube, build a Dimension and the different types of Measures.
You'll learn how to determine the type of dimensions you have.
You'll learn how to do some basic tricks. But you won't learn any of the advanced topics that I was hoping for.
This book doesn't go into any details about how historical data is handled.
How to do some basic MDX programming.
How to make custom incremental cube processing.
etc. This is a beginner's book, as the title suggests, that will take you from clueless to comfortable in Analysis Services in a short period of time. That's why I gave it 4 stars. This book in no way substitutes a good book on OLAP and/or data warehousing (such as Kimbal's books).
Title: Apache Jakarta-Tomcat
Publisher: Apress
Authors: James Goodwill
Rating: 4/5
Just recently finished reading and studying the content of the book Apache Jakarta-Tomcat by James Goodwill. I have used Tomcat as a basic JSP engine for sometime now, but admittedly knew only the basics. Godwill in his book goes through how to setup the Tomcat server, as well as various different utilities and advanced configuration. As a result of reading this book, I now know how to use the Tomcat Manager, configure the tomcat security realms, and integrating Tomcat with Apache. In addition, was learned alot through the examples on struts and SOAP.All in all this book is great for someone looking to broaden their understanding of Tomcat.
Title: Apache, MySQL, and PHP Weekend Crash Course (Weekend Crash Course)
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
Authors: Steven M. Schafer
Rating: 3/5
Attempting to install Apache following the authors' instructions will not amount to getting started anytime soon. However once you get past these issues, you will find he has done a decent job of providing an entry level for the complete newbie.Mind you, if you have any previous experience coding PHP or SQL the provided examples are not for you: buy a different book.
Title: E. Encyclopedia Science (DK Google E.Encyclopedias)
Publisher: DK Publishing
Authors: Richard Williams
Rating: 5/5
This is the second joint project after the reference book e.encyclopedia was published in October 2003. Both books feature websites enhanced by Google. Keywords in this book direct children to exclusive DK/Google websites where they connect to pre-selected relevant and authoritative websites.
The DK/Google e.encyclopedia science website is free and children can access information once they have this book. Once they get to the sites they can watch videos, listen to sounds through sound buttons, take virtual tours, read real-time reports, access databases and take interactive quizzes.
There are 8 core sections to explain and explore over 220 science topics.
Matter and Materials
Forces and Energy
Electricity and Magnetism
Space
Earth
Plants
Animals
Human Body
This has to be one of the most beautiful books DK has ever created. The colors are vibrant and the section on Space is bursting with spiral galaxies and pictures of space exploration. If you are interested in Volcanoes, you can turn to the Earth section. You can read about the eruption on Mount St. Helens and see pictures before and after volcanic eruptions.
In the Health Section, children can learn about exercise, hygiene and diet. I found the information on the futuristic nanorobots in the bloodstream fascinating.
Every section has a bold heading and interesting definition. Then, there are pages and pages of full-color pictures that can keep your attention for hours at a time. I wish we had owned a book like this when I was a child because it would have given me an information base to build on in future years. Although I must say, I think adults will find this equally fascinating. Children are always asking questions and now you can find all the answers, complete with pictures.
Fascinating Pictures:
Mangrove Roots growing upwards in coastal swamps
Tigers
Monarch Butterflies
Cross-section of a Tide Pool
High-Tech Imaging
Eye of the Storm - Hurricanes
Limestone Caves
This book also answers the following questions:
Why can an opera singer shatter glass with a single note?
How do sea organisms make their own light?
How can we reduce pollution by using Renewable Energy?
What is the lightest substance on earth and why can it float on air?
I can highly recommend this beyond amazing book to parents, teachers and librarians. E-encyclopedia is a learning resource that is not limited to just the book. While the book provides a solid grounding and interesting facts, it is actually a springboard to the Internet Universe.

Title: Sams Teach Yourself PHP, MySQL and Apache in 24 Hours
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Julie C. Meloni
Rating: 5/5
I checked out many books on PHP trying to learn it. This one has been the best so far. the explanations are very clear and concise. This will teach you the fundamentals of all you need to know to master PHP. It does not go into object oriented programming, but that does not matter to me because I have no use for it. It starts from a beginning level and teaches you about variables, operators and control statements and goes on to teach you about the whole PHP file system. The section on mySQL is done very well also. It shows you all the basic SQL commands that you will need to perform most tasks. The only thing I did not like about this book is that it talked about the Apache web server, which I was expecting (from the title). Since I am not running my own web server this information was useless to me, but it was explained in great detail. This reason will not make me lower my rating though, since I realize this was one of the books purposes. I am very fond of the Sam's series and I hope they continue to produce better and better books about programming. Great book overall.
Title: Foundation PHP for Flash
Publisher: Friends of Ed
Authors: Steve Webster
Rating: 5/5
This book is a GREAT way to join PHP/MySQL and Flash. It has helped me tremendously. I highly recommend it... But better than that... I had a problem with some code of a small project I was working on, and it just wasn't working.. I tried the Flash message boards, and a few people tried to help, but the code still wasn't working..I decided, what the heck? I'll try emailing the author of this great book for help. I emailed him my PHP code, my objective, my Flash Actionscript code. and a url to view. Within 10 minutes, he replied with a clear precise answer to the problem! Not only that, he was very friendly, and offered help if I need it in the future! WOW! That is customer satisfaction! BUY THE BOOK! I can't say enough good things about it or about the author! Thanks Steve!
Title: Joe Celko's SQL for Smarties: Advanced SQL Programming (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems)
Publisher: Morgan Kaufmann
Authors: Joe Celko
Rating: 5/5
It's too bad I cannot rate this book as a ten. A word to the wise: Celko's books cover the ANSI STANDARD SQL 92 (mainly). If the database you are working hasn't implemented the ANSI Standard SQL 92 ... then how could his examples compile? If your database implements a vendor flavor to the standard ... how could his examples compile on your database? No excuses ... please ... for not knowing your database, because Celko plainly and clearly explains the standard (ANSI SQL 92 for example) he is writting for. It is the readers job to know their database and perform some interpretation and translation in order to get some of the examples to work. Celko writes generically for the standard. If you need a specific database book on SQL call your vendor ... I am sure they will refer you to something ... and if they cannot ... FIND ANOTHER DATABASE VENDOR!Hey JOE, where can I get my hands on a pure theoritical SQL book that really explains the MATH behind SQL. If anyone knows, guitar17@lvcm.com is my email address.
Title: PHP by Example
Publisher: Que
Authors: Toby Butzon
Rating: 1/5
I know nothing of PHP, but know quite a bit of HTML. I thought this book would have much by the way of examples so I could learn PHP. But, I found this book to be hard to crack, since there are hardly any examples to follow (never could understand why the book was titled PHP BY EXAMPLE). And what examples there are, assume that you are an experienced programmer. I fell apart after the first chapter but gave it my best shot to understand the author's poor writting and explainations. I can't wait to sell this book to my nearest Half Price Bookstores. This was a real waste of my money!
