Title: MCSA/MCSE/MCDBA Self-Paced Training Kit: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 System Administration, 70-228, Second Edition
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Microsoft Corporation, Microsoft Corporation
Rating: 2/5
Supplemental material is absolutely required. The book provides relatively scant information on what appear to be the most heavily weighted exam areas. The exercises don't really prepare you for the exam since the exam questions focus on abstract/theoretical concepts as opposed to practical application in realistic scenarios. The study test questions are a pretty good inidcator of the difficulty of the questions on the exam, but there are at least a few errors; one of the more glaring ones tells you one thing in the pre-question objectives section, another thing in what is supposedly the correct answer to the question, and then BOL completely contradicts both of those. All in all, it is a pretty sad effort especially considering it is from the same company that produces the software in question.
Title: The Rational Guide to SQL Server Notification Services (Rational Guides) (Rational Guides)
Publisher: Rational Press
Authors: Joe Webb
Rating: 4/5
This book is an excellent introduction to Notification Services -- much, much better than what's available in Books Online or on the web. It's well-written, well-organized, and terse. A great text for someone just getting their feet wet.
However, it has a fatal flaw that knocks it down from 5 to 4 stars: This book has no index. I'm incredibly disappointed by this. It means that this book, once read, will never be picked up again -- if I can't find information quickly enough, I won't bother. An index is key to a good tech book, but apparently Rational Press missed that memo.
Great book, but buyer beware if you need something you can use as a reference later on down the road...
Title: PHP and MySQL For Dummies, 2nd Edition
Publisher:
Authors: Janet Valade
Rating: 2/5
I'm a newbie to PHP and MySQL. I was hoping to find a good tutorial based book on the subject, but this was not it. I guess I should've known better than to get a Dummies book as these are really only reference books. However, this isn't even good for a reference. The examples are very short and do not explain what's going on very well. For example, table joins. This is the point I'm stuck on now, which is a very important part of using a database, yet the author glossed over it in less than two pages. Now I'm just frustrated because I'm in the middle of a web project and am left hanging. I should've listened to other reviewers and got PHP & MySQL Web Development. If you're a complete beginner as I am, skip this one or you'll be lost and frustrated.
Title: OCP Introduction to Oracle9i: SQL Exam Guide
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Jason Couchman
Rating: 2/5
Book is good But Only if you are also using any other book.
Also If you are experienced Oracle user then it is OK to use this Book.I found Book from Sybex corporation much better than this Book.It contains scenario based questions which are new in OCP-9i
Oracle press should add more scenario based questions and material should be more detailed and real Exam types questions should be present in Book. Book contains only mulitple chioce questions which nowdays do not appear in OCP9i.
Title: MCDBA SQL Server 7 Administration Study Guide (Book/CD-ROM Set)
Publisher: Mcgraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Syngress
Rating: 2/5
I was extremeley disapointed with this book. It has a lot of mistakes and poorly written. Coriolis book by Talbert is much, much, better. That one actually helped me.
Title: Visual Developer SQL Database Programming with Java: Creating Fast, Efficient Database Applications for the Web
Publisher: Coriolis Group Books
Authors: Bill McCarty, Bill McCarthy
Rating: 5/5
I needed a book to give an efficient overview of SQL as used with the JDBC. This book has not suited my needs. In the "Why I Wrote This Book" section of the Introduction, the author says "There are many good books on SQL, but almost all focus on interactive SQL..." As far as I know, SQL is SQL whether it is used interactively (queries entered directly by end-user) or from application code. Also, this book contains way too much Microsoft Access and Microsoft SQL Server specific SQL, not the makings for a database-independent Java application.
Title: Sams Teach Yourself Transact-SQL in 21 Days (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Lowell Mauer
Rating: 5/5
I had a previous background on Oracle, and was about to head a C/S project based o MSSQL Server. Firt I tried "SQL Server 6.5 Programming - Unleashed" (I had SQL background, didn't I?). Ugh! I found T-SQL was far depart from Oracle (mainly PL/SQL). So I looked for something syntax oriented. "Teachyourself..." was the final answer to shed light on MSSQL implementation of SQL scripting (IMHO, the worst implementation I saw). Despite any weakness in T-SQL itself, the book is well organized and easy to follow (took 15 days, but you know, I was in a hurry). If you're comming from any other SQL dialect, stop by this book to get T-SQL insight.
Title: PHP and MySQL Web Development, Second Edition
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Luke Welling, Laura Thomson
Rating: 1/5
I simply just lost my money. Having had a lot of success with the first edition, i went on to buy this book in the hope that i could pick up more tricks to help hone my web development skills.
First, i as a customer, thought the cover of the book sucked - why would a SAMS book have a New Riders cover..ok! i thought i shouldn't be all that sensitive and tried to get beyond teh cover story, only to find to my harrowing experience that the code in the book has several errors. I wrote in despair to the suport team at the publisher's and i have not met with any response till date - are they ashamed that they have sold me a mediocre product? I had faith in the SAMS brand, and esp the authors but i want to say in my individual capacity that i have simply been cheated.
I don't want your book, you can simply have it back.
Title: PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Web Sites: Visual QuickPro Guide
Publisher: Peachpit Press
Authors: Larry Ullman
Rating: 5/5
Yes, that's right, this is one of my favourite books!
I have to thank Mr. Ullman for this wonderful book. I didn't finish it yet, but I could find everything I needed in my projects so far.
Everything is described so it can be easily understood by everybody. It teaches both PHP and MySQL separately, then together! Too many useful things to list here...
Maybe I will write another review after I finish it (if I have time :), but I am pretty sure I will like it even more!
I have read many computer books, yet this is one of the best: everything very concise to get you started right away! My unbiased advice is to buy it, you'll like it!
After all if you don't like it, you can always return it...Hope this review will help.
