Excellent tutorial and reference!

This book is excellent! It's clearly written and easy to follow! And, I must admit that when I read a review of this book by the one of the authors I thought that his opinion must be biased, but it wasn't, it was right on the mark! This book is an excellent reference book. It has replaced my previous #1 favorite, Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes. The Sams book is still an excellent title to own too! The Sams book is a good "portable" reference due to its quality and size. The Wrox book is a good desktop reference. Even though the Wrox book is a big book you'll still be tempted to keep it with you because it's so good!

Don't waste your money

First off Amazon won't let anyone give minus stars! I should have listened to "thestudent" review. The book is great but the software is as funcitonal as the nipples on a man's chest. It will not run on XP Pro with SP2 installed. The new pop up blocker M$ has installed can't be turned off and blocks all of the alleged multimedia. I went to the publishers website and guess what....they haven't updated a darn one of their "Interactive" products since 2001!!!! Hello here its 2004. The book is great the software belongs in the trash! Get the book....burn the software. Mr. Hernandez get a new publisher or have them pull this product. Quite frankly your veracity is on the line for not having having an updated verson nor getting the publisher to advise potential buyers of what I have mentioned.

Title: PHP and MySQL Web Development
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Luke Welling, Laura Thomson
Rating: 2/5
Over-rated

Even something like PHP Developer's Cookbook is much better. This uses three words for every one required, almost like it's trying to pad the book out to make it look as if it's worth more. The best choice is probably Programming PHP by Lerdorf and Tatroe - much more concise, and much more authoritative.I'm taking my copy of this book back for a refund!

MySQL & PHP from scratch

I was rather excited when Amazon alerted me on this book. I had been looking for a book which would help me with developing a web-based email application for ages.I was extremely disappointed when I finally received the book. It was totally misleading! If you are looking for a book to understand what tools and software is required for developing web based applications then you might find it useful but then again any MySql and PHP book will explain. It unfortunately does not take you under the hood to see how the MySql database is designed/created or writing the necessary PHP code to integrate it all.

Title: Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes, Third Edition

Absolutely Fabulous Lesson in SQL

If you are new to Database Application Design/Web Based Application Design, as I am, you will find this title most helpful in getting you off the ground. I bought this book in hopes that it would help me build SQL statements into my ASP pages, and it has done that and more. This book is an easy read and very clearly explains the basic concepts of the SQL language, techniques, capabilities, etc. It also offers a concise look into the way databases are designed and how they function. The book does a wonderful job of remaining non-proprietary, and is quick to point out when you are learning something that is specific to one Database Management System or another. This is a wonderful little book to add to your reference library if you wish to spend little and learn tons.

Title: Core PHP Programming: Using PHP to Build Dynamic Web Sites (2nd Edition)

Clearly shows a simple yet powerful alternative to CGI

The index in this book is appalling. The index is 95% function listings. How do I do search and replace on strings? If I don't know the name of the function that does it (the very reason I checked the book), then I'm out of luck. Also amusing is the egregious cut'n'paste error on the page explaining the CD-ROM, where they refer to the licensing for the Core Java Web Server CD-ROM. Ooops!

Not for Me

I initially bought this book because it was the only book in the store that delved right in and immediatly began giving tools to use in a website. Most other books, at the time, seemed to acedemic with much to much theory. However, after reading the majority of this book, I realized that I really didn't learn much of anything. The book spits out large chunks of code and tries to explain parts of it but it doesn't explain other areas that I guess the authors just expect you to figure out on your own.

While this book did give me some basic tools and some decent code (the code is actually very good in this book), I didn't learn enough through out the book to really expand on it.

I returned this book, purchased "PHP and MYSQL Web Development(THIRD EDITION)" by Luke Welling/Laura Thomson, and havn't looked back. I guess, for me, a book that takes a slightly more acedemic approach isn't all bad after all.

Apache configuration for multiple sites with CGI-BIN

I have to say, for the first time I feel like I have been duped by all the stars and the praises showered on this book by amazon customers. This book is good, but does not justify its exhorbitant price.Almost 70-80 % of the book is just an explanation of the httpd.conf file. (This is the configuration file for the server that controls almost all its functionality). If you read the documentation for apache (which is inside the config file!) carefully, you will see that this book just repeats the explanations in slightly modified text and larger font. To summarize, read the config file, drop the book, and save some money for Christmas.

Truly Superior, Exceptional Clarity

I used to think the pictures on the front of WROX books was abit hokey. Not anymore. Everytime I pick up Prof. SQL Svr Programming, I thank Vieira. I have 30+ yrs as a programmer. Part of that 10+ yrs as a SW System Quality Manager. I've seen plenty of code. Written volumes. Vieira's book is a highly polished diamond. (There are typos here and there but who cares when the material you want is expressed so clearly and concisely.) It is my pleasure reading right now.
