Title: PHP Fast & Easy Web Development, 2nd Edition
Publisher: Muska & Lipman/Premier-Trade
Authors: Julie C. Meloni
Rating: 5/5
As a php beginner, like myself, I bought this book to learn some of the nuances of the code and be able to manipulate it myself.First off, the structure of the book is great! You start out with primers on MySQL, with installation instructions and very basic instructions on creating tables and inserting data. These instructions are through a dos window, which is fine, although I would've liked to see some phpMyAdmin instructions as well. But it is about php, so I can't complain!Second, the author gives a quick look over the Apache server software. Excellent small tutorial, and gives you enough to get you going. Then you get into the php. The book is an extremely easy read, the text is clear and concise. The examples in the pictures are a tad small, but otherwise a useful reference. You go through many things, including creating simple mail forms to setting up user authentication.I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars because it answered all my questions. Excellent book for beginners. I was disappointed at a few aspects of php left out, but I could've got more if I wanted to spend more money.
Title: MCSE Database Design on SQL Server 7 Exam Prep (Exam: 70-029)
Publisher: Coriolis Group Books
Authors: Brad Schulz, Greg Woody, Jose Amado-Blanco, Pam Barker, Christopher Leonard, Christopher A. Leonard, Pamela Barker
Rating: 5/5
I had the benefit of taking the MOC cirruciulum from Chris Leonard while I started my self-study with this book. It is obvious to me that he is very knowledgeable about databases in general and has very commanding undertsanding of SQL 7. The authors of this exam prep book did an outstanding job of describing concepts that are hard to digest. Where the MOC fell short, these authors took over. There is information on T-SQL and stored proceedures that you will not find with Microsoft's material. Plus there is a very logical study path that makes study for MCDBA much easier. I am fairly new to SQL and I wouldn't even consider taking the test if it weren't for this book.
Title: Transact-SQL Programming
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Lee Gould, Andrew Zanevsky, Kevin Kline
Rating: 1/5
I bought this O'Reilly title because I've had good luck with O'Reilly titles before. The Nutshell series is particularly good. This one, however, is a real disappointment. First, it's focused entirely on old versions of SQL Server. Version 7.0 has been out long enough that this is inexcusable. Second, it recommends poor techniques. A book like this should *only* recommend ANSI outer joins -- old-style outer joins can return incorrect results. Third, the book is deceiving. The cover says it covers version 7.0, but 7.0 has been relegated to an appendix and the coverage there isn't very good. If you need an up-to-date, comprehensive t-sql reference, don't get this book.
Title: PHP and MySQL For Dummies, 2nd Edition
Publisher:
Authors: Janet Valade
Rating: 5/5
I think this book is great purchase for a beginner. You don't have to know how to write programs or know anything about databases. All that information is in the book. There are lots of examples and the language is easy to understand. Some of the other reviews talk about mistakes in the programs and database, but I'm not so sure about that. Maybe that's because I have the second edition which just came out. This book is worth the money!
Title: SQL from the Ground Up
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Companies
Authors: Mary Pyefinch
Rating: 3/5
This book does not properly match my requirements because I had expected a more advanced book on SQL before I bought this one but it still is an OK book to have. (the title says 'from the group UP' so I thought that it would take me up to be an expert SQL scriptor) It gives me lots of basic SQL commands such as SELECT, INSERT, CREATE TABLE, etc.. but not complex commands to use in real situations. So if you are an SQL novice, this book will do but if you are looking for SQL book for using as a referrence book, try to find another book.
Title: Sams Teach Yourself Transact-SQL in 21 Days (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Lowell Mauer
Rating: 5/5
You will use this book throughout your entire career as a SQL programmer. Each new section builds on the previous lessons. If you read each chapter and complete every exercise you will have a clear understanding of the Transact SQL language. I used this book as the first step toward my SQL Server certification and I recommend that you do the same.
Title: PHP Functions Essential Reference
Publisher: Pearson Education
Authors: Zak Greant, Graeme Merrall, Torben Wilson, Brett Michlitsch
Rating: 5/5
This is the perfect book for someone who wants a comprehensive reference of the functions available to PHP programmers. An brief description and example usage is provided for each function.I must have 10 books on PHP and MySQL, this is the one I use the most.
Title: Microsoft SQL Server(TM) 2000 Programming Step by Step
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Rebecca Riordan
Rating: 1/5
When I first started to read this book, I wanted to learn more about SQL, but this book failed. As the title says, it's pretty much just a bunch of step-by-step exercises and screen shots, but doesn't really get into too much detail, or give any reasons or explanation.
The only reason why I am writing a review now is that I now have something to compare this book against.
If you want a great book on SQL programming, I suggest you pick up "Profession SQL Server 2000 Programming" by Robert Vieira (Wrox Press), which is a great book even for novices.
IF you really want to buy this book, I have a copy that I'd be willing to let go for dirt cheap.
Title: Oracle PL/SQL Interactive Workbook (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR
Authors: Benjamin Rosenzweig, Elena Silvestrova
Rating: 2/5
This book states that it has a companion web site with additional review questions, a message board and periodically updated information. The web site is not a companion to the book. Other then the database used for the course and the answers to the "Test Your Thinking" question, there is no additional support (interactive) for this book. You are basically on your own to handle your questions. This book is really intended for a classroom environment but when you read the description on the book, you are lead to believe that you have a website for support. Disappointing and would not highly recommend.
Title: Advanced PHP Programming
Publisher: Sams
Authors: George Schlossnagle
Rating: 4/5
I know PHP and Linux are a great match but people really do run PHP on Windows as well. This book acts like it is Linux only and never mentions the Windows implementation. Other than that this is great.
