Title: Dreamweaver MX: PHP Web Development
Publisher: Peer Information
Authors: Bruno Mairlot, Gareth Downes-Powell, Tim Green
Rating: 5/5
This is the book I've been waiting for. When I used the Dreamweaver PHP tutorials, the sample files ended up throwing exceptions, and I wasn't able to finish the examples. In addition, the instructions and backup material on the Dreamweaver help pages were pretty sketchy. (Nothing against Macromedia, by the way...it's a wonderful product and the addition of PHP scripting support is very welcome). This volume, however, fills in all the blanks. Dreamweaver users will find enough PHP info to round out the included scripts, and newcomers to MySQL and PHP will get all the information they need to find and properly install the files and servers on their local systems. The hotel reservation model works well, is well planned to introduce readers to the software and the underlying PHP/MySQL code, and produces a very nice product. The authors have done a nice job in anticipating the sort of questions that newcomers to either PHP, MySQL, or Dreamweaver might have. More importantly (for this reader), the book delivers on its promise to teach the power of Dreamweaver to produce PHP/MySQL sites easily.I hope the authors will consider another (Volume 2) addition to this fine book.

If you have absolutely no experience with PHP and want to jump into the the world of web development and potentially extend your skills to create real-world web applications, then PHP and this book are for you.The book gives you a little of both world: PHP and MySQL. Teaching you the most popular functions of both PHP and MySQL, you should be able to write your own simple MySQL-driven PHP powered website or application in no time. The book also dwell into simple real-world web applications written in PHP which you can build upon as you learn. These apps include: a web mail based service, a mailing list generator, a web forum, a content managing system and even a shopping cart system! All source and even the entire book is included within the accompanying CD-ROM disc. This book alone is more than enough to get you started with PHP and MySQL programming. Of course, if you want to master or fine tune your skills in this field, I would suggest you continue your reading with: "PHP Functions", "Web Application Development with PHP 4.0", and "MySQL"; all published by New Rider.
Title: MCSE Training Kit : Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Database Design and Implementation (Exam 70-229)
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Microsoft Corporation
Rating: 2/5
If you want to take exam 70-229, this book is not for you. Most topics are just simple concepts and cannot make you well prepared for real tests. There are some typos in exercises, which make you waste lots of time to find the way out.
Title: SQL: Access to SQL Server
Publisher: Apress
Authors: Susan Sales Harkins, Martin W.P. Reid
Rating: 5/5
I own about 30 books about Access (all versions). This book tops all of them. If you are using Access 2000 or 2002(XP) and you like to know about SQL Server (2000), trust me this is it. Try to read it from begining to the end. It's written in english language (not technical slang) and it shows you some cool tricks even for those Access 97 users. Hope to see more books from these guys. Thanks

Title: SQL Performance Tuning
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: Peter Gulutzan, Trudy Pelzer
Rating: 5/5
This book, SQL Performance Tuning, has proved to be one of the most invaluable books in my reference collection of SQL books. Some of the more complex and unanswerable questions that have cropped up in the shop I work at have been revealed with simplistic elegance in this book. Topics covered include General Tuning, Specific Tuning, Join Plans, Join Strategies, B-Tree Structure, Indexes, Keys, Foreign Keys, Query Prepping, Locks, and this is but to name a few. One nice feature about this book is it's not vendor specific. It covers the "Big Eight" RDBMS so this book has dual value to me as I use both SYBASE and MSSQL 2000. Buy this book. It will reveal the secrets of the SQL universe to you.
Title: Professional Apache 2.0
Publisher: Wrox Press
Authors: Peter Wainwright, Poornachandra, Dr. Sarang, Afrasiab Ahmad, Sean Chittneden, Vivek Chopra, Micheal Link, Stephen G. Wadlow, Mathew Antony
Rating: 5/5
I got this book looking for a rich learning experience and was not disappointed. This book has got some in-depth discussions on the installation and configuration options part with usage, performance and scalability in mind. There is a very informative chunk on security which greatly increases the value of this book. Its great for references on building and configuring apache modules. Its got a good chapter on "Deciding what the client wants" which was really helpful for me fine tune apache. I got some good insight into using WebDAV and fastCGI. This book also has details on a wide variety of CGI/embedded scripting options like mod_ruby, mod_WebDAV, mod_snake apart from mod_php, mod_perl and mod_tcl. We use Tomcat at work and this book briskly walked me through how to connect (various connector details included) to an Apache server from Tomcat. The SSL and other security feature details were invaluable when I was setting up our internal server at work. The primary weakness in this book was that occasionally I found Peter's narration style a bit complex to catch on to the first time but I guess his command of the subject makes up for it. The GUI utilities are well covered but not as much as I would like. This is a great book if you need to install and configure Apache rather than develop on it(DSO modules). All in all, this is a good book that lives up to its title.
Title: Hitchhiker's Guide to Visual Basic and SQL Server
Publisher: Microsoft Press

The BEST guide for development with VB and SQL Server. Entertaining style makes for fun reading. Mr. Vaughn knows this subject cold. I am looking forward to his new book on ADO.
Title: SQL Server 2000 Programming by Example
Publisher: Que
Authors: Carlos Rojas, Fernando Guerrero
Rating: 3/5
I have been using and reading this book for my database course for a year, I have no choice, however, I am not quite satisfied with this book as the layout is plain and difficult to understand the codes.
It has all the statements in one go, and then it print out the results after the codes with few explanations of the codes. The codes section may extend up to 3 pages and followed by the results, it is hard to read and understand, you need to flip over and over again.
I just give up after reading half of the book at about page 367, that is the triggers chapter.
Title: The Guru's Guide to SQL Server Stored Procedures, XML, and HTML (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: Ken Henderson
Rating: 5/5
I liked the book because it is so well-written and so comprehensive. It is rare that you find a book that is a good read and still loaded with technical How-To. How do I know the book is well-written... I know because I find myself having trouble putting it down. I enjoy just reading it.The forward says it all. I too wish this book had existed about ten years ago. I could have really used it. I too think it reads like an experienced developer sharing his experiences. These are words of wisdom from someone who has been there. This is a great book. If you work with Sql Server you will learn something useful from this book. You will probably also find some scripts or procedures that you can use in your own work.
