I recommend this book to database and application developers interested in a very readable and informative text detailing stored procedures and most of the new features introduced in SQL Server 2000: User-Defined Functions, Indexed Views, INSTEAD OF triggers, XML, along with the new data types (bigint, table variables, and sql-variant). As omeone noted beforethe new functions SCOPE_IDENTITY() and IDENT_CURRENT() are not covered in a book but only on the book's web site.
Title: Official Sybase SQL Anywhere Developer's Guide
Publisher: Itp New Media
Authors: Ian Richmond, Steve Clayton, Derek Ball
Rating: 2/5
I was very disappointed when I tried to install this book onto my PC and failed many times ! Seems something wrong with this CD-ROM and it can not be recognized by Win-95 ! If anyone out there has any idea how to install it or get a refund on the CD (not the book itself, since I still need it) from Amazon, please let me know. Many thanks in advance !
Title: Pete Cassidy's Cookbook for Oracle SQL*Plus

Title: Advanced Transact-SQL for SQL Server 2000
Publisher: Apress
Authors: Itzik Ben-Gan, Tom Moreau
Rating: 4/5
If you've read Rob Viera's book, Professional SQL 7/2000 Programming, then your ready for this one. This book reads like a FAQ for common problems and solutions posted to the various listserves and newsgroups for SQL Server. No, this book is not as advanced as many people (myself included) would have liked. Yes, there are a few parts that are poorly written. The honest truth is that this is not the book I had hoped it would be, but the TSQL community has needed a book like this for a while - not the bare basics, but not too advanced. It's certainly better than the one and two star ratings its been given by other readers. When your finished with this one, check out Henderson's Guru's Guide to TSQL.
Title: PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Web Sites: Visual QuickPro Guide
Publisher: Peachpit Press
Authors: Larry Ullman
Rating: 5/5
I bought this book and since I started reading it, it's done nothing short of amaze me with how clearly and efficiently it teaches the important basics of PHP and MySQL web development. Most books tend to get bogged down on details such as escape sequences; this book mentions these asides when they should be mentioned, explains how to work with them, and moves on without boring the reader.
I'm a programmer in college with more of a C/C++ background. I picked up this book on Tuesday night having coded exactly two PHP scripts in my lifetime, and with no experience with MySQL. By midday Saturday (today) I launched a website for my dorm, coded from scratch.
As I said, this is simply an amazing book. A must-have for any budding web developer!
Title: Apache Administrator's Handbook
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Rich Bowen, Daniel Lopez Ridruejo, Allan Liska
Rating: 5/5
Whether you're a System Admin or Developer, the Apache Administrator's Handbook will help you understand how to build and administer Apache, as well as help you understand how it works. I've read many books on Apache, and this is by far, one of the best.
Title: Administering SQL Server 7: Complete Administration Reference
Publisher:
Authors: Divya Chaturvedi, Paritosh Pathak
Rating: 3/5
I was hoping for a robust book. If you want to learn about MS SQL 7, this is a good beginner book. However, for more meat, I also got SQL Server 7.0 DBA Survival Guide. I found that book more useful.
Title: OCP Introduction to Oracle9i: SQL Exam Guide
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Jason Couchman
Rating: 2/5
This book is a great read despite the mistakes and typos littered about its pages. Its not dry or overdone like many prep books - it's just right. In addition, it's a super value considering it's hardcover and official. My book included a CD with excellent practice test software which helped me drill in some of the tough topics. This book is also a great place to start if you know nothing about the workings of an Oracle database. Some other cram type books leave you to figure out many of the nuts and bolts on your own so you can't put together the whole picture. This book doesn't do that. It takes you through gently but briskly giving you a solid ground to work from. After reading it, I passed on my first try with the help of an 8i Cram book because there were about 4 or 5 questions on the test that the book did not cover. This leads to my only real dissappointment. The fact is that it the book is just not detailed enough in just a couple areas. In the end, I give it 5 stars. I have read 5 certification prep books (2 Oracle) in the past few months and this is the best and my absolute favorite because of its easy to read content and its hard to beat value. Happy studying.
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Unleashed (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ray Rankins, Paul Jensen, Paul Bertucci
Rating: 5/5
I recently inherited an over-due SQL Server 2000 upgrade project, which, it turned out, needed some serious rearchitecting of its data movement strategy. After struggling to find the information I needed in Microsoft's documentation and on Microsoft's tech support web site, I followed a colleague's recommendation and bought this book. The sections on DTS and replication not only laid out the answers I needed in easy-to-understand terms, but also provided examples that I was able to use right away (and learn a lot from!) I credit this book with saving my project!
