Title: Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 with ASP, ColdFusion, and PHP : Training from the Source
Publisher: Macromedia Press
Authors: Jeffrey Bardzell
Rating: 5/5
I found this book to be an excellent introduction to dynamic web programming. It doesn't go into too much detail on how to build specialized web applications, but it will show you how to do just about everything you will need to get started (e.g. registering, authenticating a user, creating pages accessible to users based on user level which you define, updating databases, etc.). It not only shows how to get Dreamweaver to write code for you, it also shows you how to write code yourself to creat pages to manage content.
It would be a good idea to be familiar with XHTML first. Before starting on this book, I went through "HTML & XHTML: The Complete Reference (Osborne Complete Reference Series)" (ISBN 007222942X), which I find also to be a good reference. I wouldn't sell my copy of either of these books at this point. If you're familiar with XHTML, you will get more out of Bardzell's book.
Some areas of improvement: I was using ASP VB Script because it was convenient (I was running IIS), but if I were to choose PHP, which I would have liked to do, then things would have been more complicated. He should tell you how to run a php server (for dynamic content) along with IIS, but says that it is beyond the scope of the book.
Despite this, the book is outstanding.
Title: Oracle PL/SQL by Example, Third Edition
Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR
Authors: Benjamin Rosenzweig, Elena Silvestrova
Rating: 3/5
It is not as good as Alice Rischert's "Oracle SQL by example". Looks like it is written for people who never programed before. So it teaches how to program using examples of pl/sql. Might be good for beginners.
Title: SQL Unleashed, Second Edition (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Sakhr Youness
Rating: 5/5
I have read a number of SQL books for different purposes. "SQL Unleashed" stands out as an excellent reference book that nicely combines practical approach with understanding of the underlying concepts. The author has gone a great length in making the book practically useful, starting with "nuts and bolts" with plenty of examples, tips, real life experiences and "dos and don'ts".

Title: SQL Clearly Explained (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems)

Rating: 4/5
This book is very simple and is geared toward beginners, does not present advance concepts provides a general idea
Title: PHP Pocket Reference, 2nd Edition
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Rasmus Lerdorf
Rating: 1/5
The book is simply a listing of commands, organised by the same categories as the on-line manual, but missing an index and also missing the explanations and exmaples of the on-line manual. So unless you know in which category to find a command, you might spend ages to find its reference. Even if you do find the reference, the information is so brief that it is useless. If you've used the command a few times before, you'll know already (even if you have a lousy memory) the things described. If you haven't used it before, what you find is not enough to know how to use it. Rasmus, I thank you for inventing PHP, but I consider this book [not worth the money].
Title: The Guru's Guide to SQL Server Stored Procedures, XML, and HTML (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: Ken Henderson
Rating: 5/5
This book is just what a programmer would want. No fluff, just the deep technical stuff. I loved the coverage of design patterns, the chapter on version control and source code management with tsql and query analyzer. The essays at the end of the book are the best I've seen in a technical book. Henderson should look into doing a novel. Bottom line - great technical info and great writing = a book that's hard to beat.
Title: Professional Apache 2.0
Publisher: Wrox Press
Authors: Peter Wainwright, Poornachandra, Dr. Sarang, Afrasiab Ahmad, Sean Chittneden, Vivek Chopra, Micheal Link, Stephen G. Wadlow, Mathew Antony
Rating: 2/5
book.I had earlier read Kabirs Apache 2.0 bible and bought this book expecting to read the chapter on Extending Apache and chapters on forking and threading. While i did find a chapter on extending apache with third party modules i found the read absolutely incomprehensible due to ... conflicting styles and non-uniformity in coverage of each module.I would have also expected to see text on writing custom modules. Afterall extending apache implies future connotations for creating new modules and their subsequent implementation. I found very thin material, almost near to nothing,in the forking/threading or performance boosting areas of Apache 2.0 - this i think falls in the learning domain of a Professional apache administrator.
Negativity apart,i have given this 2 stars because the scale of coverage in relation to the release timing is good.If the above flaws had been mended [in] the Extending apache chapter (i have not read the other ones deeply) it could have walked away with a five star and a great edge over the other thin Apache 2.0 competitors.
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Unleashed (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ray Rankins, Paul Jensen, Paul Bertucci
Rating: 5/5
Residing between the covers on this book lies all the expertise you will ever need. I've found the answers to all my questions and solutions to all my problems. The authors have also opened up new ideas (some of which I've already put into practice, the others I plan to try) to improve the performance, scalability and reliability of my systems. Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Unleashed is a must have.
