Title: MCDBA SQL Server 7 Administration Study Guide (Book/CD-ROM Set)
Publisher: Mcgraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Syngress
Rating: 3/5
I realize there is a strong marketing need to be one of the first on the market with a book. However, the book was poorly written and seemed to lack cohesiveness. It appears as if each each of the four authors were given a topic and then wrote a chapter. The only redeeming value was the repetive nature of the important topics. I will be very reluctant in the future from buying an Osborne book again. I believe that I have kept an open mind about the quality of the book. I have tried study books from most of their major competitors and found that even the worst of those was far superior to this book. Things that I had taken for granted, in both style and scope, from other vendors were lacking in this book. It would have been useful to see an Exam Objectives cut-out as one finds in New Riders or Cybex series books. The book makes a poor reference guide as well, since there is no rhyme or reason in the layout and it looks as if the book *just* covers the exam objectives only.
Title: Apache Server for Windows Little Black Book: The Indispensable Guide to Day-to-Day Apache Server Tips and Techniques
Publisher: Coriolis Group Books
Authors: Matt Keller, Matthew Keller, Greg Holden
Rating: 5/5
I'd recommend this excellent book! This book presented the steps (with great explanations) that I needed to easily set up the Apache Server. It has breath enough for more expert users, too. Its content was equal or greater than the O'Reilly press's "Apache Definitive Guide" (which I purchased first and could not understand).
Title: Google Hacking for Penetration Testers
Publisher: Syngress
Authors: Johnny Long
Rating: 5/5
I am involved in penetration testing on an occasional basis (my principal role is audit management, my principal interest is systems auditing), per other reviews this is an excellent resource for anyone planning or executing tests.
I have used google with simplistic searches and obtained good results (e.g. pictures of site being tested, too much detail in job postings ...). This book is an excelent source of ideas and techniques, for both social engineering, and more technical tests.
It has also made me consider what the google desktop search tool could be used for, when run on key servers in internal nets.
Authors writing style is very easy to read yet packed with valuable information.
This book is likely to be of significant value to forensic investigators and for those with an interest in competitive intelligence.
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Resource Kit (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Microsoft Corporation, Microsoft Corporation
Rating: 4/5
I don't have much of a need for the first few chapters of the book. They detail how to convert to SQL Server from another RDBMS platform. However, I know others have found the text useful. What I did find of value were the parts of the book which covered day-to-day operations, disaster recovery, and handling BLOBs. Security was decent, but not very fleshed out. It's a great addition to Books Online.
Title: iSeries and AS/400 SQL at Work
Publisher: Mc Pr Llc
Authors: Howard Arner
Rating: 5/5
If you wondered how to call AS400 programs from your Visual Basic program correctly, this book is your one source for how to do it. First book on the market that answered all of my client/server questions when I deal with PC to AS400 programming tasks! Not only does Howard do a good job of explaining how stored procedures work, but gives some great coding examples on how to get you up and running correctly. He goes the extra mile and talks about performance too, one thing that normally is lacking in many others out there.Nice job Howard. Look forward to others in the future!
Title: Foundation PHP for Flash
Publisher: Friends of Ed
Authors: Steve Webster
Rating: 5/5
I came to this book already a seasoned Flash designer and programmer. This book really opened up the world of dynamic Flash creation though and it's been great. The book's really well written and does a nice job of taking you through some really cool applications. Need to have a database to keep track of users of your Flash web site? Want to create a Flash based forum for your users? No problem. Get this book. It will open your eyes.

Finally! A quick reference guide for SQL. I find myself going to this book 100 times more often the the "so-called" manuals for SQL7. The book is laid out for quick and easy reference to the information I need. Great Job Ben!
