I learnt PHP3 from Leon Atkinson's Core PHP programming, but i had to refer to the manual and the list archives for several problems.I came across this book recently from KY's review corner - I have been able to raise my level of PHP knowledge after reading through this book. This book is an asset for Professional PHP developers who can refresh their PHP knowledge with the excellent case studies. For beginners there are several examples throughout the book that will help them understand how to use PHP to create fully featured active sites. This book also has extensive database treatment - using PHP with MySQL,PostgreSQL and ODBC.
It is a must for anyone wanting to use PHP or make the move from PHP3 to PHP4!
Title: McSe SQL Server 6.5 Administration in 14 Days (Sams Teach Yourself)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Damir Bersinic, Brad McGehee, Chris Miller, Matthew Shepker
Rating: 3/5
This book does do a good job of covering the material required for the 70-026 exam. Questions and labs are fairly reasonable as well. HOWEVER, while this book is reasonably complete, the writing is phenominally boring. This one will deffinately put you to sleep
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Unleashed (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ray Rankins, Paul Jensen, Paul Bertucci
Rating: 5/5
I've spent quite a bit of time reading various SQL Server 2000 books at my local bookstore trying to evaluate which book I need. I'm a web application developer of content management systems, and custom web based tools and my primary systems are based on SQL2K. I wanted a book that covered as many of the topics that I needed information on, but at the same time went into enough detail to be useful. I mean you could get SQL 2000 High Availability which is like a 700 page book from Microsoft Press that talks nothing but high availability and nothing else. However I can't really justify spending on 4 or so books, and my job is not that of a DBA anyways.I'm very pleased with SQL Server 2000 Unleashed. It gives enough detail that I as a developer can take advantage of advanced features of MSSQL, understand more how the internals of MSSQL work which allows me to optimize my queries... and since I'm a one man team and have to take care of my database server, it provides best practices on maintenance, backup, indexing strategies, etc... I was also interested in learning more about high availability, what the options are, so that I can propose a solution and the options to my manager. My I.T dept was telling me to use Log Shipping for various reasons, a DBA from a sister company was recommending Fail Over Clustering for various reasons... I was bouncing back and forth on what to do, but after reading up on the high availability section in this book my questions were answered.Definitely an important read for those developing applications that use MSSQL for a DB, and an excellent reference for database administrators. Plus the wording isn't too dry.Hope that helps in your decision making. BTW the Microsoft Press book SQL SERVER 2000 HIGH AVAILABILITY is also an excellent book if you're a DBA and have to implement H.A in a large high transaction critical environment...
Title: PHP and MySQL Web Development
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Luke Welling, Laura Thomson
Rating: 5/5
SAMS got it right with this book when realising that companies and web hosts are including PHP/MySQL combos all over the place. he.net has been doing it for years and as cgi-bins become less common and people want in-line code and dynamic sites, there needed to be the killer book on the duet that always ends up dominating: PHP & MySQL. Soon, O'Reilly is going to come out with one too but if its a good as their mSQL and MySQL book, don't bother and buy this one!

Title: PHP Developer's Cookbook (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Sterling Hughes, Andrei Zmievski
Rating: 5/5
UNLIKE ANY OTHER PHP BOOK. I write that in all caps because I can't emphasize this enough: this is NOT a typical "let's show you PHP" book. There is no walk-from-beginning-to-end introduction.PHP Developer's Cookbook is for INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED users that have already had their introduction, already used PHP for a while, and find themselves, while working on a project, saying, "How do you validate an email address?" or "How do we save sessions in a database?"This is a book of PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS, broken into little categories for easy reference. (Look at the table of contents.) Of course you could go through it from start to finish and learn quite a bit, even if you're not working on a big project yet.All that being said, THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE PHP BOOKS I'VE EVER SEEN, and I've seen them all. It's the only one I'm going to keep on my desk now as I work. It's exactly what I was looking for. (I work on PHP projects all day, and am constantly searching the mailing lists to remember how to create drop-down-menus, how to process individual words in a text file, etc. This book has it all!)Combine this with the new feature on www.php.net that lets you type "www.php.net/functionname" to immediately look up the manual page for every PHP function, and you're all set!HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Title: Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes, Third Edition
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ben Forta
Rating: 5/5
The title is "Teach yourself SOL in 10 minutes" so you should know that this is just a starting book and not a complete explanation of the language. And as a starting book this book is great! If you want to learn how to build multiuser relational databases then I would look for a book that doesn't have "in 10 minutes" in the title, but if your looking to get the jist of SQL then this book is for you. I bought the ebook edition and was able to download it instantly. The author includes links to 2 free database utility's, one of which he wrote, that are worth the price of the ebook alone!
Title: Beginning PHP, Apache, MySQL Web Development
Publisher: Wrox
Authors: Michael K. Glass, Yann Le Scouarnec, Elizabeth Naramore, Gary Mailer, Jeremy Stolz, Jason Gerner
Rating: 5/5
This is a great book for beginners. It covers everything you will need to start out and it's written very well - very easy to understand. The appendeces at the end are also wonderful, they cover php functions, mysql data types, etc. Also very helpful is the fact that you can access help forums that are specific to this book as well as downloadable files for every project in the book.
I have several other php books and this is by far the best: the easiest to understand, the most comprehensive.
Title: Apache Web Server Installation and Administration Guide (Open Source Library)

A helpful addition to your linux webserver library. Offers a few additional insights that I've not seen in other books and for the price, you can't lose.
