Title: Beginning Php 4 (Programmer to Programmer)
Publisher: Peer Information
Authors: Chris Lea, Allan Kent, Ganesh Prasad, Chris Ullman
Rating: 5/5
I requested that my Parents buy me this book over two years ago. Sure I paid them for it but I demanded this book. I'm not quite sure why I did but at the time I was wanting to learn PHP and I was not happy with the way the O'Reilly books were written for Perl (2nd Edition) so I knew that I was not going O'Reilly for learning PHP4. Now that I've had this book and time has passed I would say that I have suggested this book to lots of people and they have all learned PHP alot easier then they would have from O'Reilly books.I say go WNOR, Chris, et al. You all did a good job. I felt like the authors were sitting over my shoulder and giving me a one on one session each time I read the book. The examples were fun, understandable, and had a point them. They also helped me to have a better understanding in Programming in general. The next year, I had a C/C++ programming class and Aced it without a problem. You know, they say 9 out of 10 students fail their first programming class. I wasn't one of those nine thanks to this book.

If you're in school or college and need to learn SQL, do yourself a favor and BUY THIS BOOK!
Title: PHP Essentials
Publisher: Muska & Lipman/Premier-Trade
Authors: Julie C. Meloni
Rating: 5/5
I'm the author of the best-selling guide to graduate school, so I know what I'm talking about when I rate a self-help book. Meloni's book is amazing! Clear, concise, everything a self-help book should be.After unsuccessful struggles with other PHP and MySQL books, which caused me to fear I would never learn, thank God I found "Fast and Easy Web Development." Within a day I was writing code and I worked through the entire book in 4 days. After that I never looked back. A year later I have created a highly complex, database intensive site that includes an onsite email system, shopping cart, and all the other staples of an e-commerce site. Make no mistake, her book is introductory, and I quickly moved on to Professional PHP and other more advanced books (I now own 9 PHP books and 4 MySQL books). Nonetheless, I would never have understood them were it not for Meloni. Her book is at just the right level for a beginner. The examples are clear, and nearly every time I was just thinking "but what about....", she answered my question. Even better, her examples were FUN to work through! Some of the other books I've got are valuable, but fun? I think not.I don't think the negative reviews of her book are fair. Her book is for beginners. So why are advanced programmers who found her book inadequate giving it 1 or 2 stars? That's like a medical doctor criticizing a book on first aid because it doesn't explain how to do heart surgery. People also bitched about typos in the book. But Meloni has a comprehensive listing of all typos on her web site at thickbook.com. So the first thing I did when I got her book was go to the site and correct the typos (there were actually very few). Also, when I was getting started, Meloni answered several emails I sent her to ask for help on problems when I was stuck. That's clearly above the call of duty.In short, if you're a beginning programmer, go with Meloni.
Title: PHP and PostgreSQL Advanced Web Programming
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ewald Geschwinde, Hans-Juergen Schoenig
Rating: 5/5
Very well laid out, well written, contains all information needed to make your PostGreSQL and PHP project a success.
Title: PHP and MySQL Web Development, Second Edition
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Luke Welling, Laura Thomson
Rating: 1/5
The biggest reason that I would suggest that you NOT buy this book is that there is no errata, no support and no response from any of the authors or publishers when you try to contact them about a question. I don't know about you but I find it frustrating when I have a question about a book that I am working through and there is absolutely no where to go. Every other programming manual I have used has had an errata page and most will either have a forum or someone will respond to your emails if you send in a question. This book has none of those. I have not tried the other books that other people have recommended in addition to or instead of this book, but I suggest that you check those out first before you buy this book.
Title: Learn Microsoft SQL Server 2000 in Three Days (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: Wordware Publishing
Authors: Jose A. Ramalho
Rating: 4/5
"SQL Server 2000 in Three Days" is a great book for the absolute beginner. After installing the evaluation edition of SQL Server 2000, and beginning the books sections on SQL components, creating a sample database, working with tables, etc.., I was able to get a good understanding and start working immediately. The book touches upon and defines many topics involved with SQL server 2000(Transact-SQL, Stored Procedures, triggers, Data transformation) with an introductory and general overview approach. I gave this book 4 stars out of 5 and recommend it for beginners stepping forward into the subject matter of SQL Server 2000.
Title: SQL Unleashed, Second Edition (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Sakhr Youness
Rating: 1/5
I have read a number of SQL books for different purposes. "SQL Unleashed" stands out as an excellent reference book that nicely combines practical approach with understanding of the underlying concepts. The author has gone a great length in making the book practically useful, starting with "nuts and bolts" with plenty of examples, tips, real life experiences and "dos and don'ts".
Title: PHP Essentials
Publisher: Muska & Lipman/Premier-Trade
Authors: Julie C. Meloni
Rating: 4/5
PHP essentials is a very good book. It is well written and easy to understand. However, if you do not have any programming experience, such as Perl, this is not the best one to get started. If you do have some experience in programming and understands how the web actually works, this book is excellent to develop your programming skills.I have a Perl background and use flat text file as a database. I wanted to transfer my entire site on PHP as a language and MySQL as a database system. Therefore, I purchased this book and a MySQL book and now, I am home free. Julie Meloni uses simple examples to help you learn PHP and you can actually build and manage your database, simply by reading this book. I strongly recommend this book and buying a MySQL book to go along with it. Finally, although this book has a favorite database system covered, MySQL, it does support other database systems such as SQL, Oracle, etc... If you want to use PHP with a database system, this is the book to get.
Title: PHP Cookbook
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: David Sklar, Adam Trachtenberg
Rating: 5/5
Full of usable real world examples. Combine this book with some of the great php community web forums and the php.net manual and you are all set.
While I did find some errors in the book, a quick email to the publisher tended to get a quick response and one good thing about O'Reilly is they maintain a list of confirmed errors on the book webpage along with downloads of all examples.
In general its a great book for someone who knows programming and wants to pick up php, but probably not for the beginner who knows nothing.
The book's weakest point is probably dealing with objects and classes.
