Title: Professional SQL Server 2000 Programming
Publisher: Wrox
Authors: Robert Vieira
Rating: 5/5
Best book on SQL 2000 programming available

This book has some good info, but the book itself has many flaws. First, much of the info is copied verbatim from the 7.0 book. That would be OK if this were a second edition, but it is being sold as a whole new book. Second, half the book consists of printouts of the screens from the various Sql Server tools. For example, the DTS and replication coverage consists almost entirely of screen printouts. Some pages are literally two screen prints with a sentence or two between them. One gets the impression the Rob hasn't used these technologies much and is using graphics to bulk up the book. Regardless of the reasons for the flaws, they greatly devalue the book for me. I would say that if you have the 7.0 book, you don't need this one. Also, keep in mind that if you are working with DTS, replication, XML, OLAP and many others you will need other books unless you simply want to review printouts of Sql Server screen printouts.

Title: Advanced Transact-SQL for SQL Server 2000
Publisher: Apress
Authors: Itzik Ben-Gan, Tom Moreau
Rating: 1/5
Total waste of time

Worst hodgepodge of a book I ever read. Probably has an error on every page and some silly commentary on every other. Authors don't know transact-sql or how to write. If you want to learn transact-sql, get a different book - this one ain't gonna get you there.

Title: The Essence of SQL : A Guide to Learning Most of SQL in the Least Amount of Time
Publisher: Coriolis Group Books
Authors: David Rozenshtein
Rating: 2/5
More like a pamphlet!

My co-worker bought this book and wonder how to return it to Amazon. This book is not worth the buck if you're looking for writing rather complex SQL. It only shows the VERY basic of SQL. Easy to read, but not much content. Don't waste your time here. Go find some other book!

Title: Linux Apache Web Server Administration, Second Edition (Craig Hunt Linux Library)
Publisher: Sybex

Rating: 5/5
You Can't Go Wrong With This Book

You can't go wrong with this book if you need a reference book concerning Linux and Apache Web Server Administration.Author Aulds has a way with words, and he makes the subject easy to digest mixed with a dose of magical clarity. He is up to date, and this book covers besides Perl and CGI, PHP. Good selection of examples which anyone can use in everyday Apache Web administration shows the author's vast experience which is tempered with an equal amount of theorectical expertise.Highly recommended.

Title: Oracle PL/SQL 101
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Christopher Allen
Rating: 5/5
The ultimate starting point!

I bought this book after buying several other books that assume the reader has a basic knowledge of SQL and Oracle, which wasn't me. Christopher starts the reader at the beginning and walks them through the basic fundamentals with patience and even some humor. I think this book is a great starting point for anyone who is database ignorant and doesn't want to stay that way.

Title: Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Kalen Delaney
Rating: 2/5
Inside sql server is pretty good but could be better

First of all, let me strongly disagree with low rates that some other reviewers gave to this book. I don't think it's correct to lower the rating just because the contents didn't change much since "Inside SQL Server 7". SQL Server 2000 is very much like SQL Server 7.0 (adding XML is the only major difference). It's a companion to the product, so it should be just a next iteration of "Inside SQL Server" series. Then it seems that some reviewers probably expected to find how to program SQL Server using ADO, XML, ODBC etc, and instead only found a description of internals. While I agree that the books should have covered XML implementation better, I'd remind that the title of the book is "INSIDE SQL Server"! And I was really pleased with how much of SQL Server internals were exposed to the general public.Perhaps I liked the book so much because I'm working now on a propriatary database implementation, and for me it was really useful to learn how SQL Server is implemented. But any serious database developer should understand how query execution is planned, how records are locked, and what is a performance and storage cost of certain operations. And all these topics are presented in a best possible way.

Title: MCSE System Administration for Microsoft SQL Server 7
Publisher: Prentice Hall
Authors: Jeffry Byrne, Jeffrey Byrne
Rating: 1/5
A total, complete and utter waste of money!

I am glad my bookstore has an exchange policy because I returned this book like it was a bad disease! I replaced it with Rick Sawtell's SQL Server 7 admin study guide. The CBT is a joke, it is more a discussion on SQL 7 capabilities and features. There is no actual training, you could learn the same thing on the Microsoft website! The interactive web-site is also a joke. There are sample test questions for each section of the book. The number of questions range from 3 to 8. Yeah, that will really help me pass the exam!Do not, under any circumstance buy this book! Amazon should consider dropping such terrible books.

Could be Better

This book has a lot of good content. I felt the explanations of the different subject areas were well-written, thorough, and very helpful. Succeeding on the exam is a matter of being able to think through the problems presented to you - not just memorizing isolated facts. This book can help you gain the kind of understanding you need to take the exam.I feel the book is weak in terms of focus on the exam itself and the sample tests, etc. Many of the exam questions were very poorly worded. They don't give you enough information to make a really good decision. In some cases they were just plain wrong. (Fortunatly, I didn't find that to be the case with the real exam.) One really dissapointing thing is the way the big practice test at the end nearly repeats a lot of the individual chapter test questions. So, the information in the book is good but somebody who really knows testing methods needs to rework it.Also, I think the book emphasizes areas (e.g. replication, full-text search) that aren't stressed very much on the exam. Conversely, it seemed not to cover other areas (security and performance monitoring) very adequately. This book needs to be proofread thoroughly and corrected. The CD only contains a softcopy of the book itself plus some kind of sample test. (Since the sample test in the book were so poor, I didn't waste any time installing and taking the test from the CD.) A very useful addition would be a CD containing enough data to build a reasonably large database. This could be used to give practice in creating, loading, and then running performance tests, etc. "Northwind" and "Pubs" just aren't big enough to do this.
