Title: Apache Security
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Ivan Ristic
Rating: 4/5
Anyone running Apache on the internet knows how important it is to secure the server. This book covers just about everything to do with securing your Apache server. I imagine an Apache expert could point out deficiencies of this book, but I was able to find everything I was interested in - as well as a lot of great info I wasn't aware of. Even though this is an "Apache Security" book, there is a lot of information on securing your web environment in general.
I found the information on Denial of Service attacks very interesting. While you can't stop a determined attacker, you can do a lot of things to minimize the effects. I guess it is a bit like installing a car alarm - an attacker will realize there are plenty of other cars in the parking lot if you make yours less attractive a target. I found the chapter on logging and monitoring very useful as well. It describes how to get the most out of the potentially massive amounts of information that can be gleaned from the apache logs.
Title: Professional SQL Server 7.0 Programming
Publisher: Wrox Press
Authors: Rob Vieira
Rating: 5/5
This would have to be the best reference book I have ever read, it is superbly written. The author explains SQL 7.0 database and architectural issues in a very straightforward manner whilst still providing a book that has depth. My only complaint is that Robert Vieira hasn't written more books. Is it possible to be hanging out for a sequel to a reference book?
Title: A Visual Introduction to SQL
Publisher: Wiley
Authors: David Chappell, J. Harvey Trimble
Rating: 5/5
I saw this book in a bookstore and it did not look very impressive based on price to number of pages ratio but I had a look at it, and after trying to learn SQL from some other books, this was a breath of fresh air. This is a book you can blow though quickly, doesn't require access to a computer or even much knowledge of any particular relational database system. I read thorough half of it in a few hours, but by that time I had developed a working knowledge of SQL. (Without ever sitting at a computer). They use a visual technique and repetition to show exactly what the SQL commands are used for, and how to use them to get what you need from the database. It covers your plain vanilla SQL and so may be 'slightly' different in syntax from the SQL your database uses (but in my experience, the changes are very very minor (eg, Transact SQL does not require a semicolon at the end of a statement)). This is an awesome book for anyone trying to 'figure out' SQL. Really lets you s! ee what the commands do and lets you understand it. I reccomended this book to a friend trying to learn SQL and he feels the same way about the book. SQL is really a pretty simple language, and this book makes the simplicity clear. Covers all major parts of SQL queries. Select, Update, making tables, altering tables, granting permissions, etc. Everything you need to get you started. IF you are trying to understand SQL, this book belongs on your desk. It was published in 1989 I think, but dont let that deter you. It is the best intro book on SQL I have ever seen!!!

Title: Professional SQL Server 2000 Programming
Publisher: Wrox
Authors: Robert Vieira
Rating: 4/5
If you're anything like me, you may be considering this book as a study guide for 70-229. I recently took this exam and passed with a 909. The author had a hand in writing this exam and it shows. This book is without doubt the best text you can buy to prepare for the exam. Sure it doesn't cover everything in the exam, but it comes damn close. Buy this book, read it religiously and if you can afford it buy the Transcender materials too. You will pass.On the other hand, some of the negative comments you may read here are pretty spot on. The chapters on replication and DTS are weak-in some places really weak. And yes, it is absolutely loaded with unnecessary screen shots. If you are an SQL server guru you don't need this book. If however you are new to SQL server, I would've thought it would be a pretty handy one to have on the shelf. Oh, and in my opinion the author writes pretty well. It's a lot easier to read than most of the books in my collection anyway.

Title: Oracle Performance Troubleshooting: With Dictionary Internals, SQL & Tuning Scripts (Oracle In-Focus series)
Publisher: Rampant Techpress
Authors: Robin Schumacher
Rating: 5/5
This is the perfect read for my DBA brethren who are confused by Oracle's built-in version specific, performance-related features. Robin Schumacher does an excellent job of boiling down where you could versus where you should concentrate your performance analysis efforts and then provides simple, practical alternatives and methods for diagnosing and correcting headaches familiar to most DBAs. Where many authors limit the scope of such topics to "down-in-the-database" mechanics, Schumacher explores how external factors, such as foundational design and infrastructure, need to be folded into the optimal application/database performance mix. A must read for anyone serious about managing and optimizing performance across all versions of Oracle!
Title: The Guru's Guide to Transact-SQL
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: Ken Henderson
Rating: 2/5
this is old code adn all command line code. It's not usable in the 2004 world of writing code and using sql server.
I noticed the reviewers seem to think any other opinion needs admonished for it, but I'll take my chances. there are dozens of other more upt to date titles that would serve you much much better. This is from 1999 and writes about earlier versions of sql and methods not employed in any real shop. The reviewers must be tinkering at home since like many others have found, the code in here will blow a production implementation, even if done as specified. Go to to the author's website for an example of his skills and it will give you a new perspspective on his books.
When writing my review this moring the last one was a 3 star, and then 2 appeared like lightening. Then the 3 star which had few if any votes had over 50 not helpful votes in just a minutes time. Unbelievable. And all other good reviews got over 50 added to each one. This seal it for me. This is a charlatans work.
Title: MySQL and PHP From Scratch
Publisher: Que
Authors: Wade Maxfield
Rating: 1/5
This has to be the worst programming book I have ever read. The code will be over the head of a novice without explanation, and for the experienced PHP coder a waste of time.I purchased this book thinking it would be good for some help on a project I am working on, and it was... it helped keep a number of papers from blowing around on my desk. If you are looking for a book to help you with PHP and/or MySQL, this is the last book I would ever recommend to you. There are other books available on Amazon that would be a much better place for people at any level of experience.I wish I could actually charge the author for having read this one, because it did waste alot of time, so dont waste yours.
