Title: Hitchhiker's Guide to SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services (Microsoft Windows Server System)
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Authors: Peter Blackburn, William R. Vaughn
Rating: 5/5
I moved from Crystal to Reporting Services and had no idea how cool Reporting Services could be. Peter and Bill don't skim the surface on how to do basic things; they give in depth instruction on how to make Reporting Services work hard for you. They give ideas and example on how to create reports that will impress anyone. Between the book and the website, I have been able to solve the tough problems that have arisen from what report viewers want. Most books give basic instruction on how to do things that anyone could figure out in a week of working with the product. This book goes to the next step and teaches you how to really use Reporting Services and also gives shortcuts to help you accomplish your projects faster. The DVD, which comes with it, has a "Guide Me" section and it is full of examples, tips and tricks that helped me quickly move to the next level. I love this book!
Title: Hitchhiker's Guide to Visual Basic and SQL Server
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: William R. Vaughn
Rating: 5/5
This is one great book for database programming information, especially for ADO interfaces. I struggled unsuccessfully for months to implement the new ADO controls in Visual Basic 6.0. I finally decided my sql server just wouldn't support the ADO controls. This book saved the day. Within weeks of purchasing it, everything was set up and working better than I ever expected. I had previously purchased other "visual basic sql books" before this was available. This is the only book I've found that really does the job.
Title: SQL Bible
Publisher: Wiley
Authors: Alex Kriegel, Boris M. Trukhnov
Rating: 3/5
I bought this book because it was cheaper than 'SQL: The Complete Reference' and I am using it mainly as a reference tool, syntax, structure, inner/outer joins (I always forget how it works), etc.I needed to do an Update and wanted to find out the correct structure and looked it up in the Index, which had this listing:'updating. See modifying'I am being picky, but I would expect the index to have an actual page reference to the Update Statement, instead of having to go to another section. I am concerned about other short comings within the book.
Title: MCDBA SQL Server 7 Administration Study Guide (Book/CD-ROM Set)
Publisher: Mcgraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Syngress
Rating: 3/5
I have read most of this series for MCSE, MCDBA and MCSD and this book is average. If you are comfortable with SQL Server administration then this book will help you review the A-Z's of the exam. Don't expect this to be your only source for SQL7 administration though. It has some errors in it, as do most of the others, so try to find them and make yourself feel better about your SQL7 Admin skills. As with any of these books, they are not designed to teach a novice everything they need to know to pass the exam. I have read some comments about how none of the questions were like the test. Come on, why don't you just send someone else in to take it for you! They are REVIEW and preparation guides. Try working with SQL7 for a while in a production environment before you think you can pass the exams, then this book will be helpful in reviewing the necessary information.
Title: Professional PHP Programming
Publisher:
Authors: Jesus Castagnetto, Sascha Schumann, Harish Rawat, Chris Scollo, Deepak T. Veliath
Rating: 5/5
So glad this was the first book I purchased on PHP.Desperate to get through a few dynamic web site development projects in a hurry (as usual), this book gave me enough information and example code to get the job done without a stitch of frustration.Other books on PHP have been, for me, too watered down, redundant or just plain boring. You will still need to visit the on-line manual for specifics. But this book will get you started in the right direction for every aspect of PHP's use and power.(No longer frustrated with sick, buggy ASP! Yesss! Thank you, Open Source community).
Title: MCDBA SQL Server 7 Administration Study Guide (Book/CD-ROM Set)
Publisher: Mcgraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Syngress
Rating: 4/5
This book covers the objectives for the SQL Server 7 administration exam in a reasonable way. However, it fails to achieve greatness because it is based on a beta version of SQL Server 7 (probably beta 3), and it came out long before anyone had seen the FINAL version of the Microsoft test. As such, the book has a few flaws and probably fails to cover some of the areas that will be important on the test. Even so, I found the book well worth the money I paid. In fact, unlike some of the other exam guides I've bought in the past, this one will stay on my shelf even after I pass.
Title: Ocp: Oracle8I Dba SQL and Pl/SQL Study Guide : Exam 1Z0-001 (OCP Study Guide)
Publisher: Sybex Inc
Authors: Chip Dawes, Biju Thomas
Rating: 3/5
Cleared my OCP Paper of SQL/PLSQL today by getting 55 out of 57. Syllabus covered in this book is more than what is required. I feel that Instructor led course for SQL/PLSQL is just sufficient. But I would recommend the tests given at end of each chapter. They broaden the concepts. Plus there are some minor errors which one has to take care.
Title: Web Application Development with PHP 4.0 (with CD-ROM)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Tobias Ratschiller, Till Gerken
Rating: 5/5
A terrific book! This is a truly concept book - it won't get uotdated, as the PHP syntax changes. Although it deals heavily with syntax of the language, still there are very useful parts that deal with 'philosophy' of web applications development that would probably remain true as the syntax will deveiate from that we have now! if you're looking for a reference manual or a guide - this is not the book for you, BUT if you're willing to develop your application planning and writing skills - this is definetely the way to go!!!
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 7 Administrator's Guide
Publisher: Muska & Lipman/Premier-Trade
Authors: Ron Talmage
Rating: 1/5
The biggest problem with this book is that it offers nothing that can't be found in the dozen or so SQL Server admin books that preceded it. It brings nothing new to the discussion, and isn't written well enough to raise any eyebrows.
Title: Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 24 Hours (3rd Edition)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Ryan Stephens, Ron Plew
Rating: 5/5
I was learning to program in C++Builder and found that second guessing SQL was not getting me anywhere. All the books that I had either covered Builder or C++, and I was stumbling with the database stuff because I didn't know SQL.The Book brought me well up to speed with the syntax and I was programming in SQL in no time. The book focuses on ANSI SQL and shows how a couple of databases implement their own versions of the syntax. I had no trouble using the example code with my database, with only a few modifications.Because the book is fairly short, it wastes no time and gets straight into programming without having large chapters for the reader to wade through. This is one book that you can truly get through in 24 hours.
