Title: PHP Web Development with Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004
Publisher: Apress
Authors: Rachel Andrew, Allan Kent, David Powers
Rating: 5/5
If you are a graphic designer without any background in PHP, MySQL and database-driven web applications wanting to charge more for your work, this book is for you!
Static websites are commonplace but if you really want to be able to offer your clients the chance to manage their own content and build thousands of pages themselves using simple forms, you will not only be able to charge more for the services you offer but also have the knowledge that as a designer you are more likely to get more clients.
This book will help you through the use of practical tutorials to build dynamic websites, linking design to database. It covers simple steps, from showing you how to set up your local or home computer to test all your dynamic pages (this is a HUGE help to anyone who has attempted to get PHP, MySQL and Apache working under both OSX or Windows), to building a fully-functioning site with restricted areas and pages built on-the-fly from a database.
In short, I highly rate and recommend this book to anyone wanting to get up and running in the world of web development with no prior knowledge of programming but a real desire to expand their skill set.
Title: PHP 4: A Beginner's Guide
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: William McCarty
Rating: 2/5
This book looked promising from the reviews. The code examples were buggy, I stopped trying to work through this book and picked up PHP Essentials by Julie Meloni and had a much better experience. There are better beginner books, get one of those instead.
Title: PHP Professional Projects
Publisher: Muska & Lipman/Premier-Trade
Authors: Ashish Wilfred, Meeta Gupta, Kartik Bhatnagar
Rating: 2/5
I needed some help in the development of a fantasy sports website. I already knew some of the php basics from reading some tutorials on the web and this was my second php project. So I bought this book for three reasons 1-Its title (professional projects) 2-Its size 3-Its price which is higher than other php books. But although I found out some good things in this book like the beyond the lab chapters, for me it was a disappointment for several reasons:1-I had to read things I already know (programming basics).2-A lot of white spaces(the book should be half its size)3-The book is over priced...
If you want to buy this book make sure that you are a complete beginner or else you will not find a lot.
Title: Transact-SQL Cookbook (O'Reilly Windows)
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Ales Spetic, Jonathan Gennick
Rating: 1/5
Almost everything in this book can be found in the books on-line. This is like a printed version of them. If you need a printed version of the bol, get this book.
Title: MDX Solutions: With Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services
Publisher: Wiley
Authors: George Spofford
Rating: 3/5
Don't be surprised by the bad reviews this book has got here. There is a good reason for that. This is a strong text that deserved a good reviewer or a talented co-author.
Whereas some simple subjects are given a lot of attention, many examples and concepts are simply not explained enough or well.
The appendix is not used as a reference but as a part of the text, which is highly unusual. To understand the text, the reader must often search the appendix for five different definitions or more. The author usually avoids to explain what is in the appendix. What should be a reference becomes an essential part.
Complex concepts are given little explanation. The other existing book on MDX ("Fast Track to MDX") is incomplete, very short and superficial. This one book could fill a major gap. The text is insightful. Yet it does not use its potential at all. It makes a real pain of what could be a true pleasure.
There is simply no good book on MDX in the market. What is very unfortunate is that this book could have been an outstanding piece of work, a reference for understanding and use of MDX, but its main goals are largerly diluted and wasted in the way the book was written. A real shame. A major revison is not only due but deserved and urgent. I hope the author and the publisher do get the point.
Title: MCDBA SQL Server 7 Administration Study Guide (Book/CD-ROM Set)
Publisher: Mcgraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Syngress
Rating: 1/5
I don't see how anyone can give this book a faverable recommendation. The book is full of errors and omissions. Just as an example the book list exam 70-028 and 029 as electives for the MCDBA cert. I recommend that anyone whishing to learn SQL Server 7 (either for life or for the exam) should read SAMS Teach Yourself SQL Server 7 in 21 Days.
Title: MCSE Training Guide: SQL Server 6.5 Administration (Covers Exam #70-026)
Publisher: New Riders Pub
Authors: Brad McGehee, Chris Miller, Wayne Smith, Deanna Townsend, Stephen Wynkoop
Rating: 5/5
It was easy to read, and it kept one's attention and interest from the start to the end of each chapter. Although I had SQL Server 6.5 support experience already, I was able to read the book and pass the SQL 6.5 administration exam nine weeks after purchasing the book, while working on a contract full time. In the exam, I found that only around 5% of the questions could not be answered from the material in the book. A tip: learn the SQL server configuration parameters listed at the end of Chapter 11 "Tuning and Monitoring".
Title: Core PHP Programming: Using PHP to Build Dynamic Web Sites (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Pearson Education
Authors: Leon Atkinson
Rating: 1/5
This book was awful - poor binding, useless examples, unclear prose. This may be a new edition, but mine even had errors in the index, items were frequently list as being a page or two from where they actually appeared. I do not recommend this book to anyone - go read the PHP manual online at http://php.net/manual/en.
Title: MCSE Administering SQL Server 7 Exam Prep (Exam: 70-028)
Publisher: Coriolis Group Books
Authors: Brian Talbert
Rating: 5/5
This book more than prepared me to take my SQL server exam. Not only that, I use this book on an almost daily basis during my day-to-day operations of managing several SQL servers as the backend of a major e-commerce web-site.I recommend this book to anyone who wishes not only to pass the exam, but just to learn SQL server or to have an invaluable resource to be used on the job. A big thumbs up to Brian Talbert for providing a clear, concise roadmap for those of us wishing to attain the highly lauded MCSE. I will impatiently await your next book.
Title: MCSE Test Success: SQL Server 7 Administration
Publisher: Sybex Inc
Authors: Michael Lee, Rick Sawtell
Rating: 5/5
This book was a great study aid while preparing for the 70-028 test. Does it give you the answers for the test, no. Does it review key subject area necessary for passing the test, yes. Too many paper MCSEs (or wannabes) expect to get the answers to the test before taking the test. The purpose of these exams is to test your knowledge of the product and not how well you memorized the questions from practice exams. Using a book like this, BOL, and the product, you should be able to pass the exam. And for you people who expect to get the answers to the test before you take the test, there are at least two questions that I saw from this book on the test.
