Title: Professional SQL Server 7.0 Programming
Publisher: Wrox Press
Authors: Rob Vieira
Rating: 5/5
Let me start off by saying that I am not a DBA, nor do I have any desire to become one. I am an Internet Developer, which means I take care of all the back-end programming of a Web site (ASP, COM, SQL). I finally lost my last favor with questions to our DBAs, and this book is quite an excellent replacement.I like the way the book is broken down. Vieira separates elementary, intermediate, and advanced concepts quite nicely. I particularly like the way the chapters are broken down by function, such as a chapter for triggers, a chapter for Stored Procedures, etc. When I have a problem, I turn immediately to the chapter. The appendices are set up nicely too, although I would've liked to have seen an appendix dedicated to the internal stored procedures, and perhaps SQL keywords.Having said all that, I would recommend this book to the developers, not the DBAs. If you need a SQL backend, and your DBA is cranky, you're best bet is to buy this book!
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Database Development From Scratch
Publisher:
Authors: Rob Hawthorne
Rating: 4/5
I thought that this book is worthwhile to use in a teaching environment for beginners to intermediate SQLServer users because is does what it sets out to do, build an app with SQLServer and ASP (read the back cover before you buy). ASP and how it can be used with SQLServer 2000 is what the real world SQLServer user needs. A user has a problem; how do they solve it efficiently with the right tool. If you want XML read XML. What idiot would build this small app with XML! Get real. ASP is the best tool that fit the project, and not the programmer's desire to build a universe. Most of the world is not cutting edge and willing to go to XML since most apps developed in-house for business are for specific projects on an intranet for a department. This is a down to earth title that has a real world cause and effect example. It did not get bogged down with all of the tools that you could use to be a DBA, there are other books for that. However, more specific examples of SQLServer code would have been useful, as well as running scripts and stored procedures. Cudos to a job well done. You delivered your goal.
Title: SQL Server 7 Data Warehousing
Publisher: Osborne Publishing
Authors: Michael J. Corey, Michael Abbey, Ian Abramson, Larry Barnes, Benjamin Taub, Rajan Venkitachalam
Rating: 2/5
The book carries very important informations for the beginners in data warehousing. These informations include basic concepts of data warehousing and tips for using SQL Server 7. Experient Data Warehouse developers will find this book useless since it brings little technical data.
Title: Apache, MySQL, and PHP Weekend Crash Course (Weekend Crash Course)
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
Authors: Steven M. Schafer
Rating: 1/5
I really bought this book for the calendar project at the end of the book. But I was absolutely apalled at what the publisher claims to be "focused sessions". If you need to learn mySQL and PHP look at Anny Harris' "PHP/MySQL Programming for the absolute beginner." I am an ASP programmer looking to break away from the hold microsoft has over everyone. But you couldn't learn PHP with this book if your life depended on it. And if you need to learn Apache, I don't know what to suggest. But don't buy this book. The publisher would be doing the world a great service by either removing this book from the market or actually make the format of the book into something instructive.
Title: PHP Bible, 2nd Edition
Publisher: Wiley
Authors: Tim Converse, Joyce Park
Rating: 5/5
I was very pleased when I received this book (and ,in general, am very happy with most of the "______ Bible" reference books).
As an experienced ASP, VBScript, PERL, etc... programmer, when I was appoached to write a site in PHP, I needed a book to get me up to speed in this language with the quickness.
Explains everything from deployment to security concerns in an easy to read fashion, covers all of the usual suspects (POST, GET, ODBC, fair amount of mySQL, etc...) and common PHP conventions/algorithms.
Title: Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (With CD-ROM)
Publisher: Microsoft Press
Authors: Kalen Delaney
Rating: 5/5
... "Inside SQL Server...", by the author's admission, is focused on the internal workings of the product. This isn't a quick how-to book or a SQL Server for Dummies series or even a learn about SQL Server book so you can get a DBA job. It is designed for people whose work revolves around SQL Server and need to understand the product thoroughly. Judged on those merits my opinion is that this book is a must-have product.
Title: McSe: SQL Server 7 Database Design (The Training Guide Series)
Publisher: New Riders Publishing
Authors: David Besch, Sean Baird, Chris Miller, Denis Darveau, Wayne Smith, Deanna Townsend
Rating: 3/5
This is a very good introductory book about SQL 7.0. The first chapter gives an excellent tutorial on relational database design. However, if you are planning on using this book as your sole means for passing the 70-029 test, think again. This is probably one of the three hardest tests Microsoft has, and this book won't cut it for passing the test. But, you really won't find any book that will help you pass the test by itself. I recommend using this book along with Transcender and BOL, and you should pass the test with no problem. I did.
Title: PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Web Sites: Visual QuickPro Guide
Publisher: Peachpit Press
Authors: Larry Ullman

I just got this book and want to say that it nicely steps you through programming in php/mysql but doesn't treat you like an idiot. If your a "learn by doing" person like me, this book is great.

This is still one of the best books on SQL Admin. It combines easy readability with succint coverage of virtually all you need to know for the exam. The CD is also packed with assorted practice materials. Definitely worth its weight in gold! Thank you, the authors, for taking time to write this great book.
