Title: Lan Times Guide to SQL
Publisher: Mcgraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: James R. Groff, Paul N. Weinberg
Rating: 5/5
With 5 other SQL titles on my shelf, plus docs from Sybase, Oracle & MS SQL Server, this is the book I (almost) always grab first.Well-organized and well-written, an excellent walk-through of "the basics" and as a syntax reference with good examples.Look elsewhere however for advanced administration and optimization techniques (Celko's SQL for Smarties is good in this regard). Consider this book as best for Beginner-to-Intermediate topics.

Title: SQL Server System Administration (The Landmark Series)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Chris Miller, Sean Baird, John Lynn, Michael Hotek, Denis Darveau
Rating: 1/5
After some guy on a Web site recommended this book, I went and bought it. Frankly, I'm disappointed. Were there pages missing or did old Mike forget about SQL Agent? With SQL Server 2000 on the street, much of what you see here is old hat. Current books cover SQL 2000. This one doesn't. For a guy that apparently spends more time on the newsgroups than he does actually using the product, the self-important style is inappropriate. Go and earn your stripes, Mike.
Title: MCSE Administering SQL Server 7 Exam Prep (Exam: 70-028)
Publisher: Coriolis Group Books
Authors: Brian Talbert
Rating: 5/5
This book explains SQL admin stuff in good detail and step by step. It almost covers all the exam material (except full-text search). If you feel you miss something for specified topic even after reading this book, review that topic in SQL book online. This book + review the SQL Book online = Pass this exam
Title: SQL Server 2000: A Beginner's Guide (Book/CD-ROM)
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: Dusan Petkovic
Rating: 5/5
THIS IS THE BOOK if you have any previous SQL experience ( i.e. if you worked with MySQL or PostgreSQL ) and want to get SQL Server 2000 skills. Organization of this book is straightforward and very logical. Explanations are great and this book has even exercises at the end of each chapter! ( With answers at the back ). I am more than satisfied with this book.
Title: SQL: The Complete Reference, Second Edition
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media
Authors: James R Groff, Paul N. Weinberg
Rating: 5/5
I needed to come up to speed quickly on SQL. This book served as an excellent learning tool, then later as an excellent reference. I found the explainations and examples very clear and concise. The organization of the book was clear and allowed me to focus on the areas of SQL I needed to know most. Don't let the thickness of the book scare you, you can easily pick and choose your chapters and it reads quickly.I tried another SQL book prior to reading this one, and found it complex and confusing.
Title: Oracle PL/SQL Programming, Third Edition
Publisher: O'Reilly
Authors: Steven Feuerstein
Rating: 4/5
The "Oracle PL/SQL Programming" boasts of a superb PL/SQL introduction. This all-encompassing volume has additional information, which is a welcomed improvement over the previous edition. There are new chapters on Oracle triggers, the internal architecture of PL/SQL in the Oracle database, and in the use of PL/SQL with java. The latests of both Oracle-8i and Oracle-9i were included.
This is one PL/SQL text that I will recommended for most users of the software, (whether a beginner or an expert). Its extensive coverage ensured that no stone was left unturned.
Title: SQL Server 2000 Web Application Developer's Guide
Publisher: Osborne/McGraw-Hill
Authors: Craig Utley
Rating: 5/5
This book is an excellent guide for web application developers. It is very useful for VB developers who are moving to the web development world. All of the information that you need to develop a data-driven web site is included in the book. Building solutions using the n-tier approach described in the book will save your company or customer time and money in the future. I used the book as a source for a university class that I am taking this semester that requires ASP coding. The book contains all of the topics that an ASP developer needs to build a site that interacts with SQL Server 2000 and the conversational writing style makes it an easy read.
Title: Web Application Development with PHP 4.0 (with CD-ROM)
Publisher: Sams
Authors: Tobias Ratschiller, Till Gerken
Rating: 5/5
No, this book is not for beginners. Maybe it's not for absolute gurus, either. But for those of us in the middle-to-advanced stage, it's a godsend. This is the first PHP book I found that explained the entire process and didn't just regurgitate the PHP function reference with a few extra snippets of code. The authors, by the way, have written some great PHP tools. If I hadn't seen PHPMyAdmin, I probably would not be using PHP or MySQL. They have had a huge impact on the PHP community and are extremely skilled at writing both code and books like this.Evaluate your needs. If you don't know anything about programming or PHP, start with Julie Meloni's book or the Wrox books. If you've been programming for 20 years, know how to create a complex application, know all about CVS and PHPLib, go get a function reference and dig in. If you have some PHP under your belt and are looking for a reference to help you understand application development, GET THIS BOOK.
Title: Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 Database Implementation Training Kit (Training Kit)
Publisher: Microsoft Press Rating: 4/5
I used this as my main resource for studying for 70-028 (along with practice tests by STSWare and the online books). This was my last test for my MCSE and I passed first time, but only just. The test requires much more detail than this study guide (or STSWare) supplies. You really need to get down to the mechanics of how the various features of SQL Server work. This book just didn't supply it.My advice is either to use this and spend a lot of time reading the online books or wait until there are better third party study guides that are based on the release version of SQL Server (not the beta as most of them are at present) and the actual tests.
